First Poster For ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ Arrives

As we get ever closer to the release date of Christopher Nolan’s alleged final film in his Batman franchise, we’re getting more and more of a glimpse into this world once again before it comes to a close.

Rumor has it that the first teaser trailer for the film is attached to prints for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, which means we may get some goodies in the coming days. But before we even get that far, the very first “teaser” poster for the film has hit the web, and we’re nothing but excited.

In the poster we can see that Gotham seems to be falling to pieces, which is what we expect to be the setting for the film, as Christian Bale’s Batman makes his public turn into the hero he’s meant to become.

No sign of the film’s full cast, but you may see more of Tom Hardy’s Bane, Anne Hathaway’s Catwoman, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, or Marion Cotillard in the film’s upcoming teaser trailer later this week.

The Future Is Here With New ‘Star Trek’ iPad App

Remember back when The Next Generation was a big deal, and everyone wished that those touch pads the medics like Beverly Crusher and engineers like Geordi had would be real? Well we basically live in that future, and to add an extra layer of this geeky meta sandwich, the official Star Trek app is showing us how.

Out from CBS Interactive, the app is called the Star Trek PADD (Personal Access Display Device), the same name those cool futuristic devices were called in the show. Here’s a breakdown on why this app is so cool for fans of the Trek anywhere:

Developed in conjunction with CBS Mobile by app development studio ArcTouch, the STAR TREK PADD app transports fans back through the extensive 40-year history of the STAR TREK television franchise, including its amazing universe of characters, planets and technology spanning from STAR TREK: THE ORIGINAL SERIES all the way to STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE. The app also includes a recognizable computer voice as well as familiar STAR TREK-related sounds.

Spike Lee Back with a Vengeance to Direct ‘Oldboy’ Remake

To be honest, as with most remakes, I’m not sure how I feel about this. I’m sure it might look like a great idea on paper, at least to some, but I’m not sure director Spike Lee has the required sensibilities to direct a remake of Chanwook Park’s cult classic revenge tale Oldboy.

That’s right, according to reports, Lee is set to do that very thing for Mandate Pictures. The new film is being adapted by Mark Protosevich, who will also co-produce.

It’s not that I think Lee isn’t a good director, he is. In fact, I very much enjoyed his recent film Inside Man, which showed he can reach beyond the fare he’s usually associated with. Plus, his 25th Hour was also a very good indicator of his range as a director.

But Oldboy requires a certain bit of over-the-top thinking that I’m not sure Lee can muster. I felt the same way when it was Steven Spielberg and Will Smith who were trying to mount a remake a few years ago. I’m not sure they could do the film justice either.

At least, given the choice between Spielberg and Lee, I would pick Lee to do the remake. He’s at least farther down the right track. Of course, now that this is going again and Lee is apparently onboard, the big question is who will play the title character, know as Oh Dae-Su in Park’s version?

La-La Land Records Boldy Goes To A ‘Next Generation’ Release

Star Trek, as a franchise, has had an incredible history with music. Going back as far back as the original series, music has been a key element in the versatile series. La-La Land Records has put together a limited edition set of the some of the best music written for the classic Star Trek: The Next Generation, bringing more of the seminal music to the general public.

Star Trek: The Next Generation featured music by the likes of Dennis McCarthy, Don Davis, John Debney and Jay Chattaway, and represented some of the best TV music to come off late ’80s, early 90’s TV. The limited edition set features over three hours of previously unreleased music, and will be limited to 3000 units. The album will be sold exclusively at this year’s Comic-Con and will later become available through inline outlets starting August 2nd.

This release is another in a long line of interesting and exciting releases from La-La Land records who have consistently put together quality score releases. Hopefully the release of classic Star Trek TV music will sell well enough to encourage future releases of some of the later series. Deep Space Nine especially has some phenomenal music that few people seem to remember these days.

‘Harry Potter’ A Look Back

As sad as it may be the inevitable is about to happen. The final Harry Potter film adaptation of the phenomenally successful book series is set to arrive this week.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 will mark the end of the saga and bring to a close one of the most successful film franchises in history. To commemorate that milestone, some talented folks have put together a little restrospective of the series and its characters.

In this video you get to see the progression of Harry, Hermione, Ron and the rest of the characters as they go through all the films. It’s really pretty interesting to see how things have changed over the years.

War Movie Mondays: ‘The Enemy Below’

This week’s pick is the World War II submarine action thriller The Enemy Below (1957) directed by Dick Powell and stars Robert Mitchum (Cpt. Murrell) Kurt Jurgens (Cpt. von Stolberg), Theodore Bikel (‘Heinie’ Schwaffer), Russell Collins (Doc), and Al Hedison, (Lt. Ware, XO of the U.S.S. Haynes).

The Enemy Below is one of the greatest cat & mouse submarine films where a U.S. destroyer faces off against a German U-boat in the south Atlantic during World War II. Robert Mitchum stars as Cpt. Murrell, a former merchant marine captain who enlists in the U.S. Navy reserve in order to see some combat. Shortly after being torpedoed and adrift for several weeks, he takes command of the Haynes which is on patrol in search of enemy vessels. Most of the Haynes crew refer to him as a ‘feather merchant’ a derogatory name for a civilian captain who is unfamiliar with naval combat tactics.

The crew of the Haynes are going about routine when radar picks up an echo believed to be the conning tower of a U-boat. The captain is summoned as he makes his way through a number of curious crew members who have massed at the radar operator’s station. The captain instructs the radar operator to inform him if the contact deviates from its present course and the crew quickly becomes amazed at the captain’s issue and execution of orders. The captain informs the crew that they will follow the contact and go to general quarters at dawn in preparation of an attack against the possible enemy blip.

Exclusive: Jason Mewes Talks Comic-Con 2011, Live Podcasts, & ‘The Book of Pure Evil’

Jason Mewes has to be one of the busiest nerds working today. Although he is and will always be best known as Jay of Kevin Smith’s Jay and Silent Bob infamous characters, Mewes actually keeps himself very busy with a surprising number of projects he is currently involved with.

From filming the second season of a Canadian TV show to recording two live podcasts a week, all the while preparing for a jam packed Comic Con weekend, it just shows how much dedication Mewes has to find time to schedule an exclusive interview with The Flickcast.

Just to give you an idea of his crazy schedule, when I called he was currently on set of Todd and the Book of Pure Evil, a comedy/horror series in which he plays Jimmy the Janitor, and had just finished recording an episode of Jay and Silent Bob Get Old, his weekly podcast he does with Kevin Smith, for which he had a mobile studio set up in a closet on set so that he never has to miss an episode.

SDCC11 Preview: ‘Z-Girl and the 4 Tigers’ #1

With San Diego Comic Con fast approaching, some friends of the Flickcast have sent us advanced looks at their new releases which will be brought to the public for the first time at Comic Con. In this SDCC 11 preview, we are taking a peek at the first issue of Z-Girl and the 4 Tigers. Back at NYCC last year, we previewed issue 0 of the series. Now, Jeff Marsick and Kirk Manley, along with colorist Euan Mactavish, bring the first issue of a five issue miniseries to the floor at San Diego.

The first issue of Z-Girl and the 4 Tigers: Odyssey helps introduce readers to the zombie heroine Z-Girl and her three brothers in arms, the Tigers. Each of the Tigers has mastery over different elements as well as a military role on the team. Currently, Z-Girl and her squad are down a member as they attempt to stop a anthropomorphic ape Tavvus from summoning the spirit of Shiva to destroy the bane of humanity from the world. The second half of the issue revolves around the repercussions of this encounter as well as the Red Tiger’s spirit search for a new host to help round out the team.

Z-Girl and the 4 Tigers is a fun take the combined sci-fi, horror and action genres. Lots of influence can be seen from other successful works such as B.P.R.D. without feeling like a rehash. The combination of sci-fi tech and ancient mythologies leads to a creative and original first issue that leaves readers waiting to see what comes next.
