Movies: James McAvoy In a New International Trailer for ‘Filth’

McAvoy-Filth-Movie-1

Okay, we’ll admit it. At first, when he showed up in director Timur Bekmembetov’s Wanted as the young assassin in training, we didn’t care all that much for James McAvoy. But over the years, he’s really grown on us.

In fact, his take on a young profesor Xavier in X-Men: Fist Class is one of our favorites. Now, McAvoy is in a new movie called Filth, based on the Irvine Welsh novel.

The movie features McAvoy as a bigoted and corrupt cop who will stop at nothing to get what he wants. Sounds good. We expect nothing less from the guy who wrote the novel Trainspotting.

Also in the movie are Imogen Poots, Jamie Bell, Joanne Froggatt, Eddie Marsan and Jim Broadbent. Filth is set to hit the UK in Septmenber with a US release to follow.

Check out the trailer after the break.

Amazon Studios Announces ‘Amazon Storyteller’ Service

amazon-storyteller-beta-1

If you read that headline, you may be confused. What exactly is Amazon Storyteller? Well, it’s a new service from Amazon Studios that allows writers to turn their scripts into storyboards, complete with characters and dialog.

This new storyboard can then be shared with others for feedback. The new service launched today, but is currently in beta. The best part, it’s free.

“We’ve found that many writers want to see their story up on its feet in visual form but find it harder than it should be to create a storyboard,” said Roy Price, Director of Amazon Studios. “Storyteller provides a digital backlot, acting troupe, prop department and assistant editor—everything you need to bring your story to life. We want to see great stories turned into movies and television shows and we’ll continue to develop new features and tools that help people develop great stories.”

Want to know more? Here’s how it works:

Storyteller begins by scanning a movie script that has been uploaded to Amazon Studios. It identifies the scenes, locations and characters from scene descriptions, and “casts” them from a library of thousands of characters, props and backgrounds. Filmmakers can recast or change locations, or they can upload their own images.

Pre-E3 2013: New Screens for ‘LEGO Marvel Super Heroes’ Revealed

LEGO Marvel Super Heroes E3 Cover Image

With E3 just around the corner, the news cycle doesn’t start a few days early as publishers and developers look to get their smaller bytes out just before the flood gates open. It starts a week out. And with that first wave comes a look at LEGO Marvel Super Heroes. In the horde of stories coming out in the E3 before the next generation of console launches, Traveller’s Tales and WB Games were smart to get us these screens early.

The latest shots from LEGO Marvel Super Heroes shows some characters we already knew were coming to the game like Captain America, Wolverine, Iron Man and Thor in the staple of Marvel locales New York City and the newly announced Asgard. The crazy thing is Asgard and especially its rainbow bridge look pretty darn beautiful in LEGO. But with all the new visual glory coming soon from the PS4 and XBox One, it’s probably for the best we see these graphics now rather than after the Microsoft and Sony press conferences.

Movie Review: Joss Whedon’s ‘Much Ado About Nothing’

much-ado-whedon-1

Much Ado About Nothing is Joss Whedon and William Shakespeare at their finest, and is certainly one of the most delightful films I have seen this year. Evoking the very best of a 40s screwball comedy, the entirely black-and-white picture has a superb mix of elegance and entertainment that will please all moviegoers, not just Elizabethan (and Whedon) fans. The film crackles with a palpable energy that draws you in to its hijinks and effortlessly makes you feel a part of the romance and drama.

From the start it is clear that this is not a typical modernization of Shakespeare. Whedon uses silence and body language to great effect so that we know the disappointing and hurtful past that lingers over the sharp-tongued Beatrice (Amy Acker) and smug Benedict (Alexis Denisof) before either even speaks. In truth the pair is too stubborn and snarky to admit any fondness for each other and so their friends conspire to bring them into “a mountain of affection.”

This witty, simmering love is contrasted by the young, innocent love shared by Hero (Jillian Morgese) and Claudio (Fran Kranz). Their impending nuptials are threatened by the villainous Don John (Sean Maher), who is played with the perfect blend of treachery and sexiness by Maher. Don John wants to wound the lovers but also destroy Hero’s father Leonato (Clark Gregg), who is hosting everyone at his manor home.

Archie Comics Heading to the Big Screen, With Zombies?

Afterlife-Archie-Comics

With all the Marvel and DC comics hitting the big screen these days it’s nice to see an old favorite getting the Hollywood treatment too. That’s right, the Archie gang is heading to a silver screen near you soon as a live-action movie.

Jason Moore (Pitch Perfect) has signed on to direct while Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Glee) is writing. The updated storyline reportedly is a “high school comedy based on the original line of Archie Comics set in present day Riverdale.” But that’s potentially not the entire story.

There’s also another element that may come into play with this new story: zombies. Yep, you read that right. All due to writer Aguirre-Sacasa previous experience with Archie, his Afterlife With Archie comic.

“We’re thrilled with the team that Warner Bros, Dan and Roy have put together here,” said Archie Comics publisher/co-CEO Jon Goldwater. “Roberto has become a prolific comics writer for us, and having Jason Moore is the icing on the cake as Pitch Perfect is one of my favorite movies.”

Games: Here’s the New Trailer for Gameloft’s ‘Modern Combat 5’

Gameloft-Modern-Combat-5-1

It’s almost time for E3 in Los Angeles, so expect quite a bit of gaming news to hit the Internets over the next week or so. Kicking things off today is a brand new trailer for the next installment of Gameloft’s Modern Combat series.

This one, known as Modern Combat 5, brings us another FPS that allows players to take on one of two major stories. You are either a player trying to preserve Democracy or a player trying to crush it.

Either way, the game, much like the previous installments, looks pretty damn cool. Sure, it also looks quite a bit like other games from a much larger publisher (*cough Activision *cough) but that doesn’t mean this game won’t be fun too. There’s room for more than one or two big gaming publishers in the world.

Check out the trailer after the break. Look for Modern Combat 5 to arrive later this year for iOS and Android.
