Take a First Look at ‘Stan Lee’s Academy of Heroes’

Real life costumed heroes. It sounds like something that could never actually happen. People running around in tights, boots and masks and trying to make the world a better place just seems so fantastic that it couldn’t become a reality. But recently, there has been a trend of people doing just that. Though they don’t have super powers, these people go out trying to do what they can to make a difference in the world. And who better to guide these fledgling heroes than the man who helped create some of the world’s most iconic fictional heroes, Stan Lee.

Starting next Thursday on Stan Lee’s World of Heroes YouTube network, Stan Lee will be launching his newest project Stan Lee’s Academy of Heroes (say what you will about the man but he sure knows how to brand himself). Stan will take a group of these real life hero wannabes and help train them to become the heroes they envision themselves to be. These aren’t cosplayers. These are people going out and actually doing things to try and help those around them. Along with guest trainers like David Hasselhoff, Stan and his team will help heroes work with their strengths and overcome their weaknesses in order to find one worthy of joining Stan Lee’s World of Heroes.

Game Trailer: Deathstroke Coming to ‘Injustice: Gods Among Us’

It shouldn’t come as any surprise that Deathstroke would find his way into the new DC fighter from NetherRealm Studios (the team behind Mortal Kombat) entitled Injustice: Gods Among Us. While it is still strange that they have yet to put DC anywhere in the title of the game, it does make sense that they would choose to add DC’s top anti-hero to their roster.

In the trailer below, you’ll see how Deathstroke’s personal arsenal of weaponry and fighting techniques lend themselves perfectly to the fighting game genre. Between his array of fighting styles and seemingly unending supply of guns and swords, this mercenary is ready for MK style combat. This also isn’t Deathstroke’s first fighting game appearance as he made his video game debut in Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe as the DC counterpart to Baraka.

Book Review: ‘The Art of Assassin’s Creed III’

It’s always interesting to see how people react to art books. Some people can’t wait to get their hands on them as they anxiously await a game’s release while others like to look at them after the fact so the vistas and characters aren’t spoiled for them. I received The Art of Assassin’s Creed III almost on the same day that the review copy of the game came to me and I opted for the latter and saved the artwork until after I had experienced Assassin’s Creed III’s gameplay. After going through almost 30 hours in this lush world, it made me appreciate the concept work that went into making it come to life even more.

The Art of Assassin’s Creed III starts off with what one wouldn’t expect, the modern world. Since the interludes of Assassin’s Creed III take place in the modern era with Desmond at the helm, there is a quick exploration of the temple of the First Civilization that Desmond and his team make their base as well as the areas they must venture to recover the keys to power the temple. After that, everything heads back to the American Revolution.

Behind the Scene: The ‘Surprise’ Trailer for ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops II’

$500,000,000 in 24 hours. That is just a sickeningly absurd number. That means that on launch day, Call of Duty: Black Ops II not only shattered sales records but it was making more than $5,000 PER SECOND in its first twenty four hours on sale. To say people still want more Call of Duty in their lives would be an understatement. So, Activision has decided to give them more with the Behind the Scenes trailer for Call of Duty: Black Ops II’s “Surprise” trailer.

The internet celebrity filled trailer (which also included geek hero, Iron Man himself Robert Downey Jr.) was directed by Guy Ritchie. In the trailer below, Guy talks about how he only directs one commercial a year. He chose to do Call of Duty: Black Ops II’s commercial because of its technical challenges along with the fact that his son thinks it’s cool. He actually goes as far as saying he’d probably do this job for nothing because it is actually that interesting to do.

Spirit Award Nominations Announced

Nominees for the 28th Annual Spirit Awards were announced today and in many of the categories, some familiar names seem to be recurring. Best Feature nominees are Beasts Of The Southern Wild, Keep The Lights On, Moonrise Kingdom and Silver Linings Playbook.

Sean Baker’s Starlet will receive the Robert Altman Award, given to a film’s director, casting director, and ensemble cast. Among distributors, Searchlight leads the way with nine nominations, followed by Music Box with seven and IFC Films, Focus and Sony Pictures Classics with six apiece. Winners will be announced at the ceremony on February 23.

Wii U Sells 400,000 in First Week

At a minimum of $300 a pop, hitting sales of 400,000 units is nothing to sneeze at. That means that in the first week Nintendo was able to earn a MINIMUM of $120,000,000 in sales off the newly launched Wii U. Factor in that some percentage of these consoles sold were the $350 Deluxe Edition means they the number may be actually be closer to $130,000,000. But how does that compare to console launches in the past?

Back in 2006, the original Wii clocked in sales of 600,000 units in its first week on shelves. That’s a 200,000 unit differential. The Wii U’s launch was more in line with the PlayStation 3’s launch which was also in the 400,000 range that same year showing that the Wii U may be more of a core gamer system as opposed to the mass appeal that the Wii had to non-gamers.

Movie Review: ‘Life of Pi’ – Nat’s Take

The following was discovered in the journal of Sir Heinriech Blossom Bugfellow, Gentleman:

During my travels, I came across a curious figure of Mr. Snipe, a derelict of the town who, for a small sum, would relate his tales from across all corners of the world. On this occasion, he spoke of his journey to the Gallery of the Wizened Master, a painter of rich and moving tapestries. As Mr. Snipe recalled, the Master was well known throughout the world, and his latest exhibition featured works done with a new kind of paint, one which made the images leap from the canvas and poke at your eyes.

The works were representations of a famous folk tale featuring all mixes of animals, people, landscapes, and the like. Mingling with each other, they produced images of great wonder, such as a still ocean reflecting the sky above or endless pools of glowing bioluminscence or a vast and enveloping view of a sunken ship. Certainly they stole many a breath, for one viewer was scared to cough for fear that the painting would disperse. Mr. Snipe, he assured me, found them delightful as well, but noticed, when he walked behind these pictures, that each one disappeared when viewed from a different angle.

Movie Review: ‘Silver Linings Playbook’

Figures it would take David O. Russell to come up with one of my favorite rom-coms of 2012. I’m not ashamed to admit that rom-coms are maybe my favorite movie genre, even though the genre is, as a rule, a pitiful one. Good rom-coms come along once in a blue moon and the bad ones are not only plentiful but painful. In fact, the last really good one I remember is last year’s Bridesmaids, which wasn’t even technically a rom-com, but did have as one of its many virtues a very believable and sweet love story between the Kristen Wiig character and the nice Irish cop.

Russell’s genre is family wackadoodle, which (with the notable of Three Kings) he’s explored in every major film project he’s written/directed: Spanking the Monkey, Flirting with Disaster, I Heart Huckabees, and now the new Silver Linings Playbook. The wacky family in Playbook are the Solitanos of Philadelphia: Pat, Sr. (Robert De Niro), an extremely superstitious and OCD Philadelphia Eagles fan who’s been barred from Eagles stadium for life for brawling with supporters of opposing teams.
