The ‘RoboCop’ Reboot Trades Up Their Doctor For A Batman

It hardly seems like a month can pass by without some sort of out of left field news popping up regarding the upcoming RoboCop reboot. This is a remake that should be easy to file away as a bad idea, the original worked despite it’s premise because of Verhoeven and everything else in the franchise after that has been a miss on one level or another.

That doesn’t mean they aren’t at least trying to give us an enjoyable film next year, and today’s casting shuffle news seems to indicate that at least some one really cares about this project. Secret British badass Hugh Laurie was in line to play the CEO of OmniCorp until he wasn’t, so the film replaces Dr. House with a damn Batman, Variety reports:

Michael Keaton has been tapped to play the villain, Raymond Sellars, in the “RoboCop” reboot for MGM and Sony… The Sellars character is the CEO of the corporation that builds RoboCop, played by Joel Kinnaman. The film, described as a “reimagining” of the 1987 Paul Verhoeven pic, is scheduled to begin shooting next month.

As much as Hugh Laurie was an exciting choice for the role originally, Keaton is easily ten times more intriguing. He has a manic energy that can really bring something fun to the head of the ever-present OmniCorp. You can even gauge from the actors connected to the role that the character is not meant to be a two-dimensional prick, but perhaps a character with some interesting perspective.

This film once again has us nodding our head in approval at the choices it has made in pre-production, let us hope that good mojo translates to the production phase that is set to begin soon.

Ryan Gosling’s Directorial Debut Not What You Might Expect

There are few actors as ‘hot’ as Ryan Gosling right now, the man has the work load of Ryan Reynolds with the industry cred Micheal Fassbender. Now he is looking to capitalize on that sizzle by making his directorial debut with How to Catch a Monster.

The film is neither a gritty noir about catching a serial killer, or a light-hearted sequel to How to Train Your Dragon, it is actually a dark fairy tale. Variety has the story, along with a former Gosling co-star who has been tapped for the lead:

Ryan Gosling will make his directorial debut with the dark fairy tale he wrote “How to Catch a Monster,” with Christina Hendricks set to star… [The] Story is set against the surreal dreamscape of a vanishing city and centered on a single mother of two being swept into a macabre and dark fantasy underworld while her teenage son discovers a secret road leading to an underwater town.

Wow, not at all what you might expect from the normally very serious actor. Conceptually it sounds a bit hectic, but if Gosling is half as good of a writer as he is an actor than there is a fair shot he can pull it off. A film like this will hinge on tone, so we will know very quick what kind of directing chops Gosling has. Also any film that casts the lovely Christina Hendricks as the lead already gets a +1.

This project is one we will be keeping a close watch on as it develops, so keep tuned to The Flickcast for any new updates.

‘Beverly Hills Cop’ Is Being Pitched As A TV Series Right Now

The Beverly Hills Cop franchise might not seem like a natural fit for a TV series, there are only so many jokes you can make about a fish out of water. Yet somehow the news that the creator of The Shield and Eddie Murphy are on board makes the concept worth looking at.

We actually heard Eddie Murphy talk about this potential project in a Rolling Stone interview about a year ago, but it seemed more like a pipe dream than an actual factual project. That just changed as Vulture picked up the scoop that Shawn Ryan has joined with Murphy to get this show off the ground:

Multiple industry insiders tell us Ryan, Murphy and Sony Pictures Television have partnered on a small screen adaptation of the massively successful film franchise, and that broadcast networks began hearing their pitch on the spin-off this afternoon. And here’s the kicker: In addition to his main role as an exec producer, Murphy has agreed to an on-camera role in the show.

The potential show would follow Axel Foley’s son as he leaves Detroit to escape from his Father’s shadow. Of course the best way to escape Axel Foley’s shadow is to go to Beverly Hills, a town that he has not had any impact on what so ever. Silly premise aside, the core concept is inoffensive enough and leaves the door open for returns for Axel and every one’s favorite Judge, Reinhold.

Stay peeled to The Flickcast for any updates on this show as it should find its home sooner rather than later.

Movie Review: ‘Solomon Kane’

By Chris Ullrich

Solomon Kane, based on Conan creator Robert E. Howard’s series of stories, begins the film slashing his way around the world destroying anything, and anyone, who gets in his way. He even kills his own men, especially when they show cowardice. This tirade of evil comes to a screeching halt once Kane encounters the Devil’s Reaper, whom the devil has sent to collect Kane’s soul.

Kane, barely escaping with his life, realizes his evil ways have led him to this point and decides that he must change if he is to survive. Once he realizes the error of his ways, he then embarks on a new life, relinquishing violence in an effort to achieve redemption.

Of course, if Kane had stuck to that decision, this would be a very short movie indeed. Fortunately, he doesn’t and inevitably must return to his violent ways. But this time around, instead of the greedy, evil mercenary he once was, Kane now has a noble purpose and an actual chance at the redemption he seeks.

The innocent daughter of a Priest (Pete Postlethwaite) who had befriended Kane is taken prisoner and to save her, Kane will do whatever he needs to do — even if that means killing a few people along the way. Plus, an all-consuming evil is threatening to take over England and Kane has decided that man of peace or not, he can’t let that happen.

‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’ The TV Series Is An Idea Just Wild Enough To Work

Back when the no brainer announcement of Joss Whedon signing on to direct The Avengers 2: Thanos’ Boogaloo hit the web, there was another minor news item attached that was less widely discussed. Joss Whedon would also lend his expert hand in crafting a Marvel universe live action TV series for ABC.

The cryptic announcement was met with some speculation about what exactly the new show would be about. Now Deadline has broken the news that a live action S.H.I.E.L.D. show has been officially green lit by ABC:

S.H.I.E.L.D. will be written by Whedon and frequent collaborators, his brother Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen. Joss Whedon also is set to direct the pilot, schedule permitting. Production on the pilot, which marks the first live-action Marvel TV project to get a green light, will start immediately.

The main focus of any Marvel TV series should be on expanding the total universe, and there is no better way to reach the widest corners of the Marvel cinematic universe than with a show based on S.H.I.E.L.D. So this announcement makes a ton of sense.

Take a look after the jump for the top three reasons why this is pretty stupendous news.

Telltale Games Might Not Be Done With ‘Back To The Future’ Games

The Telltale Back to the Future adventure game was a lot of fun. Working as a sequel to the film trilogy, it clearly wore it’s love and respect for the original trilogy on its sleeve, even going so far as to getting Christopher Llyod to play the Doc and original Jennifer, Claudia Wells, back as Marty’s flame.

While the episodes might not have been the greatest work from Telltale, any fan of the series had a lot to love in the monthly installments. Despite its success, after the ‘season’ ended we didn’t hear much in regards to a new set, prompting people to believe that maybe Tell Tale was done playing in that universe.

Thankfully Christopher Llyod let slip some info at FanExpo in Canada that suggests otherwise. Talking at a panel, Llyod told the crowd that he will once again be voicing Doc Brown in a new set of episodes from Telltale. Of course the game is still unannounced so we wont be able to get any info from Tell Tale, but you can lend the statement some credit because Llyod would certainly be in the know.

As for confirmation and release details, those are still a ways off, so stay tuned to The Flickcast where will keep you up to date on this potential new game.

Alternate Opening Scene From ‘The Avengers’ Hits The ‘Net

The Avengers is a phenomenal movie, there is not a whole lot more hyperbole we can throw onto the film at this point. So as the Blu-Ray release approaches we must find another angle in these news items. Thankfully a recently released alternate opening has been released over on Yahoo! for us all to marvel at.

I say we are thankful because this alternate opening provides us with something  substantial to say about the film that has already had so much said about it. The alternate opening is actually not all that good, or more precisely not as good of a way to start the film. Compared to the ‘jump right in’ action of the eventual opening, this concept takes a ‘teasing look forward at the end’ approach.

So with out heaping even more praise on the final film, we are now able to appropriately shower Joss Whedon and his editorial staff for making the right cinematic decision. Other than to pat the filmmakers on the back for a cut well done there is not much else in this minute and a half clip that feels all that important.

We know there is a ton of deleted content that would have made it to the film if an over three-hour Avengers film was feasible, but this scene is not a part of that promised quality content, which is ultimately why it was released in advance of the Blu-Ray.  To give us a tease of what is to come when we all pick up our copies September 25th.

So take a look at the alternate opening after the jump, and keep your eyes peeled to The Flickcast as this release creeps closer.

‘Call of Duty: Black Ops 2’ Special Editions Announced for XBox 360, PS3 and PC

It’s already going to be the best-selling game of 2012. Even Activision Blizzard’s PC darling Diablo III can’t compare to the multiplatform might that is Call of Duty: Black Ops 2. For most gamers, it isn’t a matter of “if” they are going to get the game as much as it is “when” and “where” they plan on getting it. But now, with the announcement of three different special editions, “which” becomes the biggest question for them to answer.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 will have two versions coming to the XBox 360 and PlayStation 3 and one digital download version. The Hardened Edition will retail for its standard $79.99 for XBox 360 and PS3 as will the Digital Deluxe Edition for PC download. There will again be an epic collector’s edition to go alongside some of the Call of Duty masterpieces of the past as well-known as the Care Package. You can check out the full list of what comes in each special edition below but there are a few cool things to note.

The pinnacle of excess comes this time from the Care Package. In addition to all materials that come in the Hardened Edition, it comes with a MQ-27 Dragonfire Drone. In addition to using them in the game, now you will have the opportunity to harass friends, family and pets in real life with this flying terror. Sadly, it doesn’t come with a fully loaded machine gun like it does in-game. That would have made for some interesting hunting sessions for players of the game in heavily wooded area during deer season.
