‘The Dark Knight Rises’ And ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ Both Opened Simultaneously In China

In America you almost never see two films targeting the same audience released wide on the same day, this is sort of an unwritten rule among studios to make sure films don’t directly compete with the same audience. In China, film releases are programmed by a state-owned organization who are not afraid of pitting two western Box Office titans up against each other in a single weekend.

As a result, yesterday both The Amazing Spider-Man and The Dark Knight Rises hit Chinese cinemas, both playing to big numbers.  While both films did big day one Chinese business there has to be a winner, and surprisingly Spider-Man pulled in about a million more for the day.

While Spidey won the general box office, The Dark Knight Rises did do huge numbers as a 2D film and in IMAX . In fact both grosses represent a rather great opening day, suggesting that the direct competition might not have  as big of an impact as you would generally think.

The big day pushed The Amazing Spider-Man to over $700 Million worldwide. The movie fell short of the Raimi trilogy’s lofty domestic numbers, but all told the Sony reboot is a tremendous success in a summer where it was overshadowed by two of the biggest comic book films of all time.

Interesting international box office numbers, which is nice to see based on how much of a dud the domestic box office has been in the last few weeks.

Kenneth Branagh’s Jack Ryan Reboot Gets Official Release Date

There are two prime ‘seasons’ on the Box Office calendar, summer and holiday. Both represent times of the year where most people like to go watch movies, and as a result, most of the best films get released in those windows. During these seasons there are single weekends that are the marquee slots, reserved for the films most likely to draw in the biggest audiences, the fourth of July and Christmas.

If you want some idea of how much faith Paramount has in their new Jack Ryan reboot, you have only to look at its freshly minted release date for an answer. Kenneth Branagh’s CIA thriller reboot will be hitting screens December 25th, 2013. The new potential franchise starter stars Chris Pine as the titular analyst, Keira Knightley as his love interest, Branagh himself as the villain Kevin Costner in an important but as yet unidentified ‘key’ role.

One of the most interesting developments for this film is the way Paramount is setting the franchise up. They don’t seem content in just developing a new franchise in the style of the Bourne films or James Bond, instead Paramount thinks that there is a whole shared universe of Tom Clancy characters that they can develop like Marvel Studios has done with The Avengers.

So the development of this film has turned into a rather interesting experiment, stay connected to The Flickcast for any future updates.

A&E’s ‘Bates Motel’ Series Finds Its Mama Bates

A&E is setting up a new series that will serve as a prequel to Hitchcock’s classic Psycho. The new show, Bates Motel, will attempt to tell the tale of how young Norman went from mama’s boy to psychopathic killer and the show has just cast its Norma Bates.

The news comes from Deadline which is reporting that academy award nominated actress Vera Farmiga is set to take on the role:

[Bates Motel] examines the twisted relationship between serial killer-to-be Norman Bates and his mother Norma. Farmiga will play Norma Louise Bates who is described as passionate, and compelling, a smart, multidimensional character who is always capable of surprising us. The Universal TV-produced Bates Motel has a 10-episode straight-to-series order for a 2013 premiere.

Between Bates Motel and Hannibal, it looks like TV execs are very interested in using the TV format to explore the unexplored pasts of some of cinema’s greatest killers. Hopefully the long form nature of a TV series will provide a better venue to tell these tales as opposed to prequel movies that have thus far been very uninspired.

The good news is A&E does have faith in the show as they already ordered it straight to series with out the need for a pilot. So it will have more of a chance to tell its tale sans the ratings pressure that Hannibal will feel over at NBC.

Keep tuned to The Flickcast for more news from the impending series as it gears toward production.

Check Out the First Footage from Seth Green & Matt Senreich’s ‘Star Wars: Detours’

We all know and love the work of Robot Chicken creators Seth Green and Matt Senreich, even when they detoured from their regular antics of playing with MEGO dolls to produce a meh claymation VOLTRON spoof in Titan Maximum. But now they’re finally doing something that both kids and adults can get behind, as they make fun of the easy target of George Lucas and his galaxy far, far away.

Star Wars: Detours seems like a mesh of the animation style of Clone Wars meets the comedic writing and even voice talent of Robot Chicken with appearances by Seth MacFarlane, Breckin Mayer, Seth Green of course, and a few more along the way.

Take a look at the sizzle reel below, originally made for the Star Wars Celebration, and expect to see more from the guys as the show ramps up production for a “mid-2013” release. May the Schwartz be with you.

Box Office Report: ‘The Expendables 2’ Leads Again In A Deja Vu Weekend

It is weekends like this that really tempt me to just copy and paste last week’s report. The top 3 remained the same and no new movie could do better than seventh place in another mundane, ho-hum late summer weekend.

The top of the charts was once again highlighted by the under-performing Expendables 2 which brought in another $13+ Million. In retrospect, even though the film is not doing the same business of its R-Rated predecessor, taking the top spot two weeks in a row might be enough of a win to help get a third go-round green lit.

Once again The Bourne Legacy came in second, even still it is on pace to be the lowest performer of the franchise. Of course if you look at it in the wrong context that sounds bad, but when you realize all the factors working against the film it actually did about as well as any one should have reasonably expected.

Jury Finds for Apple in Apple Vs. Samsung Patent Lawsuit

This comes directly from the “obvious to anyone with eyes” department. In a unanimous decision the jury in the landmark case of Apple vs. Samsung has found that Samsung did infringe on Apple’s patents with a number of its devices.

Samsung has also been found guilty of willful infringement for most patents for most of the company’s devices. In addition, all of Apple’s patents were found to be valid, leaving Samsung with no damages being awarded and in a pretty bad positon.

The jury has awarded Apple over $1 Billion in damages. I guess a billion dollars is pretty cool.

What does this mean for the tech industry? It’s too soon to tell, but it probably means we can look forward to an Apple vs. Google/Motorola lawsuit soon enough.

It also probably means that companies are going to have to work a lot harder to differentiate their devices from Apple’s. Well, at least the very successful ones like Samsung will. HTC is probably pretty safe. And Nokia. Sorry guys.

More on this as it develops. . .

Check Out the New Trailer for ‘Butter’ with Olivia Wilde and Jennifer Garner

This movie looks kinda interesting. Plus, it has several hot women (and Hugh Jackman for the ladies) in it and that’s usually a good thing, right? Check out the new trailer for Butter after the break.

Meantime, here’s the rather lengthy synopsis:

A tale of competition at its most cut-throat, BUTTER surveys the raw ambition of Laura Pickler (Jennifer Garner), the wife of Bob Pickler (Ty Burrell), Iowa’s long-reigning champion butter carver. For 15 years, Laura has relished her high-profile role as the beautiful, loyal helpmate to her affable, artistically gifted husband. But when Bob is pressured to retire and allow someone else a chance at glory, an indignant Laura decides to enter the competition herself.

She is first in line on sign-up day, only to see her odds of victory fall below 100% with the arrival of an unlikely yet formidable contender: 10-year-old Destiny (Yara Shahidi), the African-American foster child of local couple Julie and Ethan (Alicia Silverstone and Rob Corddry). And that’s not all. Bob’s would-be mistress, bad-girl stripper Brooke (Olivia Wilde) also declares her candidacy, as does his #1 fan, Carol-Ann (Kristen Schaal).

Movie Review: ‘Hit and Run’

Dax Shepard: Okay, I’m writing this vehicle — hmm, vehicle — what do you want to be?

Kristen Bell: I’ve always wanted to work in conflict negotiation, or something with horses.

DS: Perfect! I’m playing a badass driver/action hero with a heart of gold and a great left hook. you can always be arguing with me over violence.

KB: Well, I don’t want to be too stuffy.

DS: No, the twist is that you’ll be the aggressive one, like we’ll have one scene where I say something that offends you and you get really mad at me. And I’ll always be doing what you want.

KB: Ha!
