First ‘Red Dawn’ Reboot Trailer with Chris Hemsworth Arrives

Yesterday, if you can remember that far back, we brought you the first poster for the reboot of the 1984 action cult classic Red Dawn. And now, as promised, there’s a new trailer today and we, of course, have it for you.

In it we get a good look at all the action, drama and even a little sexual tension that goes into your average angry hordes invade the Pacific Northwest and teenagers have to defend America movie. Gotta say, it doesn’t look horrible.

Sure, we still have a soft spot for the original and, if we’re being really critical, we know the original movie was such a product of its time it probably won’t translate to modern audiences and that Chris Hemsworth is really 29, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that this new movie just looks entertaining. And sometimes that’s all you can expect from a movie.

We don’t always need them to be masterpieces, just check-your-brain-at-the-door entertainment. Mission accomplished it seems.

Judge for yourself and check out the trailer after the break. Red Dawn hits theaters this Thanksgiving.

Starbucks and Square Make a Deal

In what will surely be a boon to caffeine-seeking techies everywhere, coffee giant Starbucks and Square, the San Francisco-based payment system startup, have reached a deal that will see Starbucks using Square’s system in all its U.S. stores. According to the report, Starbucks is putting 25 million into Square as part of the deal, which will also see Starbucks’ CEO Howard Schultz joining Square’s Board of Directors.

Here’s how it works: “Once the system is in place, customers will need to show the merchant a bar code on their phones. But when Starbucks uses Square’s full GPS technology, the customer’s phone will automatically notify the store that the customer has entered, and the customer’s name and photo will pop up on the cashier’s screen. The customer will give the merchant his or her name, Starbucks will match the photo and the payment will be complete.”

We’ve been fans of Square for quite awhile now with some of us here at The Flickcast using it frequently for personal and business transactions. It’s a great app with a lot of potential. This new deal will hopefully help the company achieve even greater recognition and levels of success.

Now if only Starbucks could work on improving the coffee. . .

Get Your First Look at Marvel’s ‘Castle: Richard Castle’s Storm Season’

Yes, it may seem like a rather cumbersome title for a comic/graphic novel, but Marvel’s upcoming Castle: Richard Castle’s Storm Season still looks pretty cool.

Written by Brian Michael Bendis and Kelly Sue Deconick with art by Emanuela Lupacchino, the hardcover graphic novel is based on the best-selling novel by Richard Castle. Here’s more from Marvel:

In this “adaptation” of Derrick Storm’s second novel, the private investigator is hired to find a missing a woman—but what should have been a routine mission quickly spirals out of control when Storm overhears the woman’s terrifying scream on the wire. Plagued by the victim’s helpless cry, Storm—despite an ominous warning—investigates. Soon, he’ll discover an international conspiracy reaching further than he ever imagined—and perhaps the truth about Clara Strike, a CIA agent the world thinks is dead.

Look for Castle: Richard Castle’s Storm Season to hit comic shops, the Marvel Comics app, iBookstore, the Nook Bookstore and more on October 15th. Check out some preview pages after the break.

First Full ‘Red Dawn’ Reboot Poster Arrives

Some of you, if you’re old enough, may remember an 80’s action movie called Red Dawn, which was directed by John Milius and written by Milius and Kevin Reynolds. It featured a pretty good cast including Patrick Swayze, Charlie Sheen, C. Thomas Howell, Lea Thompson, Jennifer Grey, Harry Dean Stanton and Powers Booth.

The film told the story of a band of High School students who fight against a Russian invasion of middle America and when it came out in 1984, it wasn’t exactly a blockbuster hit. Still, it did well enough and over the years it’s developed a pretty large cult following and many of us here at The Flickcast have a soft spot for it.

And now there’s a reboot. This time around the cast includes Chris Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson, Adrianne Palicki, Isabel Lucas and Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Dan Bradley is directing this time around and we’ve got the first poster for the film to share with you today.

Check out the full version after the break. Look for Red Dawn to hit theaters in November. Wolverines!

Take A Peek Inside The Set Of ‘Puppet Master X: Axis Rising’

Do you remember those Puppet Master movies? Those awesome B-flicks that involved iconic little puppets like Blade during various gory adventures, some times through time itself. They were made by Full Moon Features who are carrying a touch for low budgets horror cinema in much the same way Rodger Corman did decades ago.

The go-getters over at Evil Puppets, one of the last bastions of puppet-based cinema appreciation in the world, recently was invited to the set of the tenth Puppet Master film where they were able to see first hand some awesome horror puppetry action:

Alright fans of evil puppets and ankle biting demons from beyond, lend us your eyes!  Full Moon Features was kind enough to invite Anthony Sant’Anselmo, founder of ‘Evil Puppets’ to capture exclusive, behind-the-scenes coverage on the now in-production ‘Axis Rising: Puppet Master X’! … Say what you will about some of the films Full Moon has put out, but you cannot deny the endless well of creativity and originality that [Charles] Band’s companies has encompassed over the years

Check It Out: Sir Patrick Stewart, Olympic Ticket Scalper!

Funny or Die is known for bringing together some crazy casts for often hilarious internet videos. To capitalize on the current Olympic fever they have released one of their better videos yet.

Starring Sir Patrick Stewart, The Olympic Scalper follows a London ticket scalper as he looks to break scalping history at the games. The video also stars Game of Thrones’ Maisie Williams, Olympian Ryan Lochte and the incomparable Simon Pegg.

The sketch is generally pretty damned hilarious, but the exchange between Pegg and Stewart had me in stitches. It is great to see these guys take the piss out of one of their mutual golden geese.

These little projects are exactly why new media on the internet is the way of the future. The internet is the wild west of filmmaking, anything goes and the fast gun stands above the rules we have grown accustomed to. I mean seriously, the fact that something like this exists for no other reason than to make you giggle for 3 minutes is pretty much proof positive that the world is a pretty splendid place.

Check out the video over at Funny or Die and stay tuned in to The Flickcast should any more slices of awesome come across our radar.

Round 2: Tony Moore Suing for Co-Ownership of ‘The Walking Dead’ and Other Works

It’s sad when things go wrong, especially when the people in question were childhood friends and former friendly collaborators. Sadly, that’s just what’s happening between Tony Moore and his former colleague Robert Kirkman. And this isn’t the first time.

According to The Beat, Moore has filed a new lawsuit claiming he should be named joint author of The Walking Dead, Battle Pope, Brit and more.

In a lawsuit filed Tuesday in US District Court, Moore wasn’t pulling any punches:

Kirkman is a proud liar and fraudster who freely admits that he has no qualms about misrepresenting material facts in order to consummate business transactions, and it is precisely that illicit conduct which led to the present lawsuit (and to Kirkman’s business ’success’ generally).

Ouch. Further, in the lawsuit Moore contends he and Kirkman co-created all the works in question and Kirkman “fraudulently removed Moore’s name as co-copyright holed after the proofs of the first issue of The Walking Dead had been turned in.” Moore also claims he was coerced into transferring all his interests in The Walking Dead to Kirkman so a TV deal could be made.

Kirkman has yet to respond to the new lawsuit, but you can bet he and his legal team will dispute all of this. After all, no matter the validity of these accusations (and we’re not speculating at this time), Kirkman and Co. certainly don’t want anything to interfere with the runaway success of The Walking Dead. There’s just too much money at stake.

We’ll be keeping an eye on this as it’s probably gonna get ugly.

‘Doctor Who’ TV-Movie Coming for Show’s 50th Anniversary

Some of us here at The Flickcast are fanatical fans of the BBC’s long running show Doctor Who. Others are not quite as enthusiastic, and that’s okay. To each his or her own.

Still, no matter your thoughts or feelings about the show, there’s no denying it’s very popular with millions of people around the world. Obviously, the BBC knows what they’ve got and are giving fans of the show a little something extra to celebrate Doctor Who‘s 50th anniversary.

That’s right, the show — who’s last season was the most-watched series ever on BBC America and the most downloaded on iTunes — is getting a TV-movie. The special will be called An Adventure In Space And Time and will highlight the genesis of the character. It will air next year.

Until then, the latest Doctor Who series (season) starts in the UK this month and comes to BBC America in the Fall.
