Check It Out: A Handsome And Well Made ‘Y: The Last Man’ Fan Film

Y: The Last Man is one of the great comic book stories of the early 21st century. It details the adventures of Yorick Brown, the last man in a world where all of the males in every species were wiped out all in one terrifying moment.

What made Brian K. Vaughan’s masterwork so good was his characters. The women in this post-man world were complex, well-rounded and often expertly crafted. Everyone had a motivation and they all felt natural for this hyper-real situation they found themselves.

The story has been floating around Hollywood for quite some time, but can never seem to find the proper traction to move forward. So leave it to the internet to fill a void while the studios twiddle their thumbs.

Y: The Last Man Rising is a fan made film that sets up, loosely, the world of Y. It acts almost as a pilot, setting up several aspects of the larger story as opposed to telling a single Y tale. The production is rather impressive for a fan project, and most of the cast seems to channel their characters extremely well.

Martin Campbell Will Try To Reboot A ‘Blake’s 7’ TV Series

Martin Campbell’s particular skill set seems to be geared towards remaking something. He is best known for his two James Bond reboots, Goldeneye & Casino Royal, both of which routinely rank among the best Bond adventures.

When he tries to make an original movie, or at least one with out cinematic forebears to stand on, he makes Green Lantern. So consider it a positive turn of events when Deadline reports that Campbell is getting back in the reboot game:

Martin Campbell [will] revive the cult 1978 adventure/sci-fi series Blake’s 7. Writer Joe Pokaski will pen the re-imagining of the original series created by Terry Nation, a prolific UK TV writer who also created the Daleks for the classic BBC series Doctor Who. Campbell is attached to direct the Blake’s 7 reboot, which is being shopped to U.S. networks.

If Campbell’s revival can connect with modern thematic elements and topical stories like the Battlestar Galactica relaunch did, this has all the makings of a great new show. There is a reason why those classic old series still resonate today, and if given the proper respect we could see something special.

Or we could see dreck, the man did do Green Lantern after all, and he still has some time left on his director jail sentence for that one.

Stay tuned to The Flickcast for any future updates on this potential project as it makes the rounds at US networks.

Edgar Wright Adds A Secretive New Project To His Upcoming Slate

We are just a little over a week removed from learning that Edgar Wright has not one, but two new movies in the works. One seems to be a traditional Edgar Wright-Simon Pegg project, The World’s End, and the other is the potentially huge Marvel ‘phase 2’ movie, Ant-Man.

Well Mr. Wright must have been downright bored in the last few, relatively, slow years for his work. Deadline is reporting that Wright is set to direct a secret new project for J.J. Abrams:

Paramount Pictures is mobilizing a sci-fi film called Collider, and it is a collision of several of the top guys in the genre. Edgar Wright will direct the film, and he is co-writing the script with I Am Legend‘s Mark Protosevich. Wright is producing with his longtime Big Talk Productions partner Nira Park and JJ Abramsthrough his Bad Robot banner.

No word on when he plans to shoot this new sci-fi project, but the most logical assumption would be after Ant-Man. Of all these potential movies, the Marvel adventure is the only one that is likely on a strict timeline, even though it was the one and only announced film with out a release date.

Looks like Edgar Wright will be a busy guy in the  next few years, we are all winners for that. Stay peeled to The Flickcast for any updates on this impressive slate of upcoming films.

New Apple ‘Siri’ Commercial Featuring Director Martin Scorsese

Even if you’re not a fan of Apple or its products, you have to admit the company does make some interesting commercials and also tends to get top talent both in front of and behind the camera for them. The latest example of this is the company’s new add for Siri, the iPhone 4S’ “intelligent personal assistant” featuring director Martin Scorsese.

In the new spot, the director of Hugo, Goodfellas and Taxi Driver sits in a New York City cab, ordering Siri to rearrange meetings, locate a friend named Rick, and call up real-time traffic reports — a hint to a new feature of Apple’s upcoming iOS 6.

“I like you, Siri,” Scorsese says. “You’re going places.”

She is indeed. Check out the new spot after the break.

A New ‘Jurassic Park’ Sequel Might Be Closer Than We All Think

The Jurassic Park franchise is one of cinema history’s biggest disappointments. The original was a revelation and a generation defining experience. The sequels were both less than noble efforts to recapture the essence of what we loved in the first film. Both, while ok in their own ways, were resounding Jurassic Park failures.

So the idea of going back to the island has always remained a possibility. There is so much more world to explore in the series, and even a couple misfire sequels can’t taint the thirst we all collectively have for more Jurassic Park.

Recently Collider spoke with producer Frank Marshall in advance of the latest Bourne film, and the subject of JP4 came up:

“I would say that it will be on the screen within two years” Marshall went on to reveal that they’re aiming for a summer release since it’s a “popcorn movie,” and confirmed that it’s definitely a sequel and not a reboot or remake.

Yes, thank you Mr. Marshall. Describing Jurassic Park 4 as a summer ‘popcorn’ movie is the best bit of news regarding the potential sequel we have yet heard. The original worked precisely because it was a ‘popcorn’ movie. Broad strokes painted with exquisite digital detail.

Weather or not we do indeed get a sequel by Summer 2014 remains to be seen, but knowing that the powers behind the film have the right mindset for the project, and the eagerness to get it made sooner rather than later is great news.

The Eighth ‘Hobbit’ Production Vlog Takes You From Dale To San Diego

One of the biggest presentations this year at Comic-Con was The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey panel in Hall H. Peter Jackson and company showed off twelve minutes of new footage and a brand new production vlog.

While it is highly unlikely we will ever see the footage in its comic-con form, we have been graced with the production vlog. In fact it has even been enhanced to give us a peek at Peter Jackson’s experience at the convention itself.

Typically these vlogs do a wonderful job of making you feel apart of the larger whole that is The Hobbit production, but the additional Comic-Con aspects actually allow fans everywhere to feel, at least in a small way, like they partook in The Hobbit Comic-Con experience.

Aside from all the con goodness on the front end, the main vlog itself is also one of the better yet released. It detailed the final days of shooting, and gave us our first look at some key elements.

You can check out the full new vlog after the jump, and I am sure no one needs reminding that The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey hits theaters this December 14th.

Monday Picks: Rock ‘N’ Roll High School

This week’s pick is the 1979 Roger Corman cult classic Rock ‘N’ Roll High School which features the legendary NYC punk rock band The Ramones in their first ever feature film. Corman alumni Allan Arkush who began his career with Roger Corman’s New World Pictures in the mid 1970s directed the film. Corman’s company helped launch numerous careers for many directors like Joe Dante, Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, Peter Bogdanovitch, Jonathan Demme, Ron Howard and the Zucker brothers.

P.J. Soles stars as Riff Randall, a rebellious teenager who challenges the authority of Vince Lombardi High School’s newest principle, Evelyn Togar (Mary Woronov) who rules over the school with an overwhelming hatred of rock ‘n’ roll music and will stop at nothing to keep it from disrupting the students. When Riff learns that The Ramones are coming to town to play a concert, she plans to get backstage and deliver to Joey Ramone a song she wrote titled “Rock ‘N’ Roll High School”.

Soon after learning that many of the school’s students will be attending the concert, principal Togar confiscates Riff and her best friend Kate’s tickets thwarting any attempt Riff has at getting her song to The Ramones. At the same time, High school jock Tom Roberts (played by tennis player turned actor Vince Van Patten) hires the school’s business guru Eaglebauer (Clint Howard) to be his dating consultant in an attempt to get a date with Riff Randall.

Twelve lives ended alongside 58 injured and countless others forever changed.

Just after midnight on Friday morning, James Eagan Holmes walked into a crowded movie theater in Aurora, CO showing The Dark Knight Rises. He carried with him a Smith & Wesson M&P .223 semi-automatic rifle, a 12-gauge shotgun and a Glock .40-caliber handgun while wearing a gas mask, ballistic helmet and various other pieces of protective armor. There was an additional Glock found in his car by police. Holmes would open fire at the unsuspecting patrons of the theater.
