Microsoft Announces Office 13 Consumer Preview, Available Now for Windows 7 and 8

It’s hard to remember the last time I used a Microsoft Office product to get any of my work done, but as it’s still the most popular suite of office apps out there so someone must still care about it besides Microsoft. Following that logic, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer today unveiled the company’s next generation Office Suite during a press conference in San Francisco.

The new product, ingeniously called Office 2013, includes Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. It is available today as public “Consumer Preview” (or what anyone else would call a “Beta”) if you’re using Windows 7 and Windows 8. Users of older version of Windows (of which there’s probably a lot) will have to wait.

“We are taking bold steps at Microsoft,” Ballmer said at the press conference. “The new, modern Office will deliver unparalleled productivity and flexibility for both consumers and business customers. It is a cloud service and will fully light-up when paired with Windows 8.”

Check This Out: Thomas Jane Returns as ‘The Punisher’

As is the case in Hollywod, remakes, reboots and whatnot are always in style. We’re experiencing that right now with the new Spider-Man movie, a reboot of a Spider-Man movie released only ten years ago which spun two sequels.

Another, perhaps somewhat less well-known reboot was The Punisher, which was brought to life by actor Thomas Jane in a 2004 movie and featured John Travolta as the bad guy. That movie was rebooted only a few years later starring the equally awesome Ray Stevenson. Let’s just try to forget the Dolph Lundgren version, shall we?

Since his time as The Punisher, Jane has always maintained he would love to return as the character in a new movie. Trouble is, nobody seems to want to make a movie with him as The Punisher. So, undaunted, he decided to make one himself.

You have to admire the man’s dedication to a role. Check out Thomas Jane as The Punisher after the break.

Apple’s Next Version of Mac OS X ‘Mountain Lion’ Reportedly To Drop July 25

Now that the hype over Comic-Con is ending we can turn our attentions to other things we also love as much as movies, TV and comics: gadgets and tech. This time around, for you Mac users in the audience, we’re getting word from various sources that the next version of Apple’s OS X (aka Mountain Lion) is going to launch as soon as July 25.

On of the main sources for the this news are the folks over at 9 to 5 Mac who’ve heard that Apple Stores both in the United States and overseas are planning overnights for Tuesday, July 24th. They speculate that with Apple promising Mountain Lion “in July”, it makes sense that said overnights would lead to a launch of the OS on the following day.

We think this is pretty sound speculation too and follows many of Apple’s previously established release patterns for these types of updates. Plus, the Gold Master of Mountain Lion has already been released to developers (we’re running it on some of our Macs in fact), so that means the software is ready to go.

Mountain Lion is a great upgrade and offers a bunch of new features sure to please long time Mac users as well as newcomers. We hope Apple decides to let it into the wild soon.

Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion will be a $19.99 upgrade for all users. For more on Mountain Lion, check out Apple’s website.

SDCC12: Deadpool Plays a Joke on Us and Gets His Own R-Rated Trailer

Right at the start of Comic Con we reported on a rumor that the next game coming from Activision was going to be the Hit Monkey game. While we were all hoping from our Flickcast offices (a.k.a. our San Diego hotel rooms) that this rumor would come to be false, nothing surprises us anymore and if Hit Monkey was on its way, we would have dealt with it.

Luckily during Saturday’s Marvel gaming panel, everything changed. Instead of getting a monkey with guns, we got the Merc with the Mouth. Deadpool is coming to consoles in the aptly titled Deadpool: The Game. Seemingly voiced by the same actor who took on Deadpool’s role during Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2, Deadpool will be joined by the inner dialogue that plagues his insanity ridden life in the comics.

This game also looks like it will follow the trend of recent mature comic book games like Batman: Arkham City or Wolverine: Origins where “s**t gets real.” This isn’t a happy-go-lucky web-slinger cracking jokes and tying up bad guys for the cops to come get them. This is going to be a guns blazing and head chopping lunatic making jokes that are not safe for the office.

Box Office Report: ‘Ice Age’ Takes Advantage Of The Quiet Before ‘The Dark Knight’ Storm

Remember the big splash The Avengers made at the box office all those weeks ago? Remember how it seemed like the biggest most ridiculous opening ever? Well prepare for some deja vu next weekend.

In advance of the release of The Dark Knight Rises, only the fourth Ice Age ventured as a new release this weekend. Headlining a rather stale weekend as movie goers brace for another massive release.

Ice Age: Continental Drift raked in a solid $46 Million in its opening weekend. The number is neither impressive or disappointing, it just sort if is. These sorts of sequels make money based on the current franchise good will, and apparently Ice Age is holding steady.

Swinging into second place is The Amazing Spider-Man with an estimated $35 Million. It is really hard to label that number a disappointment, but given how much money the previous films made this reboot is lagging behind.

Still you have to chalk this up as a win for Sony despite the knee jerk comparison reaction. The reboot so close off the heels of a successful trilogy is still making a ton of money. Especially compared to other comic book movies not starring the web-slinger.

SDCC12: An In-Depth Look At Marvel’s Newly Announced ‘Phase 2’ Lineup

It is hard to describe exactly just how gratifying it is to see Marvel own the cinema world right now. When Marvel first got the crazy idea in their heads to make their own movies, little did the world know that in a few short years we would be here.

Proving the geek cacophony right, that just telling the stories like they are told in the comics, has become an era defining moment. It has taken the comic book movie fad  and turned it into a full-fledged cinematic genre that shows no sign of slowing down.

I hope you will pardon a little hyperbole on my part, but that is the kind of emotion that is running through my mind as the scope of Marvel’s movie-verse panel settles in my mind. Marvel trotted out their road map for ‘Phase 2’ this weekend in San Diego, and it brings ‘Phase 2’ into much greater focus.

Marvel officially announced a five film slate that, much like the five films before The Avengers, will act as a lead up to Avengers 2. Even though these films will lead towards a single event film, that doesn’t mean Marvel is treating them as tiny pieces to a whole.

On the contrary, Marvel is actually treating each individual franchise like they would the solo run of these characters in the comics. Which might just be the secret sauce that makes these films individually exciting, but collectively intoxicating.
