The Path of Phase Two in Marvel’s Movie-verse is Becoming More Clear

At the end of The Avengers we got a tease about the direction the next ‘phase’ of  the Marvel movie-verse would be heading. Seeing as how that film has currently made over $600 Million at the box office in the states alone, it is safe to openly discuss that Thanos was pulling the master strings in The Avengers.

That could have several different influences on the next phase of Marvel movies. We wont know for sure exactly what will happen in the next set of films, and the inevitable Avengers 2, but the new franchises Marvel sets in motion in this phase should give us some hints.

The guys over at Latino Review have allegedly figured out what one of those new franchise is going to be:

Marvel’s plan has been 2 superhero movies in their Unified Film Universe each year. Next year will bring us the new entries into the ‘Thor’ and ‘Iron Man’ and 2014 will bring us ‘Captain America 2′ and… GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY.

You can expect official confirmation in a few weeks at Geek Mecca. In the mean time we can start to piece together what these clues mean for the next three years of the Marvel Movie-verse. For one, the subtle hints at the Infinity Gauntlet story line in the post credit sequence gets a little stronger.

FF2012: Tim Burton’s ‘Frankenweenie’ to Open 2012 Fantastic Fest

Even with Comic-Con in San Diego looming on the horizon, some of us are thinking farther down the road towards Austin, TX in September. That’s right, we’re thinking about Fantastic Fest, the amazing genre film festival that runs from September 20 to 27.

And, as thoughts turn to Fantastic Fest, so must they turn to films as well. In fact, we now know that one film in particular will open the festival on September 20th. That film? Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie.

In fact, it will be the world premiere for the film, with the studio taking it out officially on October 5. The black-and-white 3D sci-fi monster film, written by John August and directed by Burton, is about a boy who brings his beloved dog back to life — with just a few complications.

Catherine O’Hara, Martin Short, Martin Landau, Charlie Tahan, Atticus Shaffer, Robert Capron, Conchata Ferrell and Winona Ryder are among the actors contributing their voice talents. Looks like fun. Can’t wait to see it and to get to Austin.

Good times.

Check It Out: ‘The Last of Us’ Trailer Remade With ‘Little Big Planet 2’

The Last of Us is one of the most anticipated games set to release in the next 12 months. From the creators of the Uncharted series, this new IP promises an epic story centered around a post-apocalyptic world, told in a cinematic and engrossing way.

Some crafty fans out there have marshalled that anticipation and turned it into a piece of internet gold. Using the still shockingly endless sandbox that is Little Big Planet 2, YouTuber theclassicevil  has crafted a recreation of the most recent The Last of Us trailer.

As a self professed Sony fanboy, this Sony on Sony IP love fest really does things for me. However, the creativity, and general hilarity, of this video has some heavy cross over appeal. Using Little Big Planet 2 in such a creative way illustrates a key point Sony proponents like to make.

The Playstation 3 era is being defined by its boundary pushing approach to tent pole IPs. Little Big Planet and Mod Nation Racers both emphasis creativity and community in their multiplayer experience.  Something that has never really existed on a console before. And on the other end of the spectrum is the games by Naughty Dog, the developer of The Last of Us, that showcase immersive entertainment experiences that give you all the best parts of playing a game, watching a movie and reading a novel all in one package.

Check out the trailer recreation after the jump.

Movie Review: ‘Ted’

Seth MacFarlane’s feature-film directing debut mines two of his favorite devices: anthropomorphism and ’80s pop culture. In Family Guy we got a talking dog; in American Dad, a talking fish (and an alien); in The Cleveland Show, a family of talking bears. Now, in Ted, we get another talking bear. It goes without saying that MacFarlane voices all of them, blending outsider commentary with the tics of whatever creature’s spouting it. And as for the ’80s pop-culture references, well, MacFarlane’s spent nearly two decades mocking one.

Ted’s ostensibly a coming-of-age story about 30-something John Bennett’s (Mark Wahlberg) choice between a normal, adult life with his girlfriend Lori (Mila Kunis) and his pot-smoking, hard-drinking state of arrested development, represented and enabled by his talking teddy bear. However, maybe because it’s a comedy or whether it’s MacFarlane’s ego, the film has no interest whatsoever in its human characters .

So much so that two of the three main subplots — Ted getting a job at the local supermarket and Ted getting stalked by a deranged fan (Giovanni Ribisi) revolve, naturally, around Ted. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, because every time the scene shifts from Ted to Wahlberg and Kunis, it’s like a symphony of chalkboard scrapers and wailing cats led by Dully McMyBrainIsOnFire.

‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ Launch Trailer Gets Us Ready to Swing

With The Flickcast’s review copy of The Amazing Spider-Man in transit, we can’t wait to get our hands on it. Early reports mention that the team at Beenox has captured the magic of web swinging through NYC that was missing from Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions and Spider-Man: Edge of Time. Throw in the new costume designs, a Stan Lee preorder bonus and new takes on some of Spidey’s classic villains and you have the makings of a movie tie-in title that bucks the trend and actually delivers. If Spider-Man 2 was able to do it, why can’t this rebooted Amazing Spider-Man do the same?

In the trailer below, we get a big peek at the villains and encounters surrounding them. Black Cat’s story looks to be more of an antagonistic one although there is a brief flirtation seen if you look closely enough. The Rhino appears to be the barreling powerhouse we expect, just like the Scorpion gets quickly dispatched as he often is in the comics. We even catch a glimpse of the nature of the relationship between Spider-Man and the Lizard. In the trailer you can see Spider-Man trying to poke the Lizard with some sort of injection, presumably some kind of cure based on the history of the two characters (including their current story arc in the pages of The Amazing Spider-Man).

Take a look after the jump and stick to The Flickcast next week for a full review of The Amazing Spider-Man, out now on XBox 360 and PlayStation 3.

For The Sake Of News, Here Is The New ‘Looper’ Trailer

Normally I like to leave the opinion stuff for the end of the article, but it is important to lead with it here. This is the new Looper trailer, and I wont watch it. Trailers tend to give away too much stuff, but most of the time we don’t realize it does, and there is still some level of surprise while watching the film.

This new trailer doesn’t spoil the upcoming film, but it does give away a few plot points that would be better discovered during the course of the movie. I am not making any assumptions here, these are actually the opinions of Rian Johnson, the film’s director:

If you’re already set on seeing Looper, I’d avoid any trailers from here on out. They don’t ruin the movie, but they tip a few little things that are fun to discover in the context of the movie.

And:

Just to clarify – I approved all the trailers, they’re great an they won’t ruin anything big. But the small things they tip are fun to discover in the movie.

Those tweets are direct from the director himself, and they are keeping me from watching the trailer. However, I posted it because I realize not everyone is already sold on this film, and apparently the trailer is very good.

You can catch the new trailer after the jump, and if you are new to Looper, but want to catch a more kosher trailer, you can do so here.

Is James Cameron Planning On Shooting Three ‘Avatar’ Sequels Back-to-Back-to-Back?

Sigourney Weaver is about to star in a new USA channel politics themed show, Political Animals. Which as put her on the press circuit that looks to gain some knowledge on her future endeavors. Which may or may not include a sequel to the most successful film of all time.

While talking to the fine folks over at Showbiz 411, Mrs. Weaver let slip what might be the future plans for Cameron’s blue-tinted billion dollar franchise:

Then she films “Avatar” 2, 3, and 4 with James Cameron. That’s right: they’re making three sequels to the blue 3D phenom all at the same time. Weaver says she has no idea how long it will take, or how it’s going to work. “I just show up,” she said. If “Political Animals” is renewed, USA will have to wait until all that’s over.

The rumor mill suggested that there would be two Avatar sequels in the works for a simultaneous shoot, but this is the first we have heard of a full trilogy shooting back-to-back-to-back. This news also begs the question of exactly how does Sigourney Weaver’s character return, she didn’t seem to make it in the first film.

Keep tuned to The Flickcast for any updates on this franchise as they break, it is kinda popular so I guess we are honor bound to cover it.

Google Announces Chrome Browser, Google Drive App for iPhone and IPad

As a Mac OS X user, I’ve moved away from Apple’s Safari web browser and have been using Google’s Chrome for pretty much all of my daily browsing. It works very well, for the most part. But until today, one thing has been missing in the seamless Chrome experience: the Chrome browser on the iPhone and iPad.

Fortunately, Google has remedied that issue and announced Chrome for the iPhone and iPad during day two of its I/O conference in San Francisco. Chrome for iPhone and iPad, which needs iOS version 4.3 or higher, will be available later today.

Another new thing Google announced today which I’m particularly excited for is the Google Drive app for iOS. With the Drive app on iOS, you can open PDFs, photos, videos, documents and anything else stored in your Drive while you’re on the go. You can also search all your files, share them with collaborators, and make files available offline.

That last bit is really cool. Offline files is an awesome development which makes this service even better. No internet connection? Don’t worry, just make changes to your document and the next time you have a connection, it will sync. Awesome.

More from Google’s I/O event as it comes to us. In the meantime, I’m hitting refresh on the iTunes Store until Chrome is available for download.
