Jay and Silent Bob Return To The Movies… In Animated Form!

Say what you will about the recent work of Kevin Smith, but there was a time when he was the voice of a whole generation of film fans. As a card-carrying Smith fan I have been enjoying nearly all of his output since the underrated Mallrats, and yes that includes Jersey Girl.

One of criminally under seen projects he brought to the world was Clerks: The Animated Series. An absurd cartoon that packed more laughs into its brief six episode run than several whole seasons of The Cleveland Show. It was a show ahead of its time, heck it even co-starred Alec Baldwin before he became a comedy icon in 30 Rock.

Well it seems that Smith hasn’t gotten animation out of his system just yet, MTV Geek News is reporting that Smith is looking to release his first animated feature next year:

Entitled “Jay and Silent Bob’s Super Groovy Cartoon Movie,” the movie is slated for next year. Why do the next “Jay & Silent Bob” in animation? “We’re cartoon whores here at SModCo,” Smith admitted. He also said that his SModcast Pictures will do a tour similar to the one they did for “Red State USA” to promote their first animated feature.

Hopefully the Super Groovy Cartoon Movie takes its cues from the Animated Series and exists in that same fictional universe, if only to see Leonardo Leonardo being thwarted one more time. ‘Well played… Clerks!’

Tarantino’s ‘Django Unchained’ Gets A New International Trailer

Last week we had a chance to see the first teaser for Quentin Tarantino’s new film Django Unchained. The movie looked like the sexy love child between the classic blaxploitation and western genres, and an oddly natural next step for Tarantino after the Kill Bills and Inglorious Basterds.

Thankfully international audiences tend to need to be sold films differently than their North American counterparts, which allows for the release of this more strait-forward trailer that gives us a more traditional sense of the plot of the movie. For those new to the Unchained train, here is the official synopsis:

Set in the South two years before the Civil War, “Django Unchained” stars Academy Award®-winner Jamie Foxx as Django, a slave whose brutal history with his former owners lands him face-to-face with German-born bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz. Schultz is on the trail of the murderous Brittle brothers, and only Django can lead him to his bounty. The unorthodox Schultz acquires Django with a promise to free him upon the capture of the Brittles – dead or alive.

Django Unchained comes out on Christmas Day, so it is basically the Tarantino’s Christmas present to cinema fans everywhere. Check out the new international trailer after the jump.

Yvonne Strahovsky Joining ‘Dexter’ For Season 7

Fans of Chuck, the series that would not die (until it did) have probably been missing one of the best reasons to watch that show: Yvonne Strahovsky. Fortunately, the TV gods have smiled on us and will be giving us more of our favorite female super spy soon.

That’s right, the lovely Strahovsky will be joining Showtime’s Dexter in season seven for a multi-episode arc. She’ll play a “strong, independent woman” who helps Dexter and his colleagues with a few old cases — but Dexter thinks there’s something she’s not telling them. I’ll bet he’s right.

Of course, as we all know, Showtime is a premium cable network which often features a great deal of blood, violence and nudity/sex. Does this mean we’ll finally get to see more of Strahovsky than we’ve seen on those websites where they put celebrity heads on other nude bodies for fun? Not that we’ve ever gone there of course. . .

Whatever happens, this development is more than enough reason for us to take an interest in Dexter again. Kudos Showtime. Kudos.

Talking Mini Figures Debut in ‘LEGO Batman 2’

When we revealed the LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes “Open World” trailer, we also heard the first glimpse of the newly voiced LEGO Batman and Superman. Now, with their latest trailer, Traveler’s Tales lets us take a peek at more of the LEGO DC Super Hero family in action with voices for the first time.

In the video after the jump, Batman, Superman, the Joker and the Riddler are all finally seen in their full LEGO glory. Instead of being restricted to physical humor, an additional layer of depth is added to the LEGO games franchises by allowing characters to be voiced for the first time. Batman does a try hard gritty imitation of Christian Bale from the recent Nolan trilogy.

Superman seems like more of an airhead than ever. And the combination of the two has the makings of comedy gold. Just from the two interactions between the two stars from the trailer, there are already so many more potential character building set ups now available to the duo. Add in voice to the rest of the cast and this could very well be the best LEGO game yet.

Take a look at the full LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes trailer below and stick to the Flickcast for more as LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes hits all major gaming platforms next week on June 19th.

Joss Whedon’s Three Hour ‘Avengers’ Director’s Cut Could Get a Theatrical Release

The Avengers has become one of the most successful films of all time. In record time it has brought in over $570 Million domestically, but it is not likely to surpass the top two films on the all time charts during its initial run at the Box Office.

Superhero Authority is reporting that Marvel Studios knows that the nature of the Summer movie season limits The Avengers chances for ultimate all time glory. So in an effort to give the movie a chance we might see a re-release in the near future:

The Avengers is sitting comfortably at No. 3 overall on both the domestic and International ticket sale charts but it seems both Marvel and Disney desire the No. 1 overall spot and a current rumor says they could be contemplating releasing The Avengers: Director’s Cut in theaters at the end of this summer.

It might not take the film all the way to the top spot, but a directors cut re-release could do more business than the Titanic 3D re-release from earlier this year, which at the end of the day is all that divides The Avengers and the number two spot. It is not 100% known what new material Marvel has for the movie, but at nearly 40 minutes of new stuff the film would take on a whole new level of epic.

It doesn’t escape The Flickcast that an official extended edition re-release gives Marvel the option of adding in more teases for the next phase of the Marvel film series. So keep your eyes peeled here for more details as they develop.

E3 2012 Quick Recap

If you were on The Flickcast last week, you no doubt got hit with our bombardment of E3 coverage. With a convention so big, it was obviously impossible to cover everything but there are a few major things that everyone should know about this E3.

Of any of the big E, Sony had the most impressive E3 presentation because of two games. Beyond was the surprise game announcement of the show that was visually striking and has people talking, much like the trailer for The Last of Us did last year. Speaking of The Last of Us, we got to see actual gameplay this year which showed both the awesome tension and brutality of the title without even having to focus on the virus or mutations it causes and instead only showing the ongoing human versus human conflict happening in it.

Sony also brought out the Wonderbook which creates a virtual storybook, with their big announcement tied into the work of J.K. Rowling. While on paper, this sounds like an interesting concept and probably would have been a huge hit at an event like Toy Fair, it didn’t resonate with the E3 or gamer audience. Instead, it felt like it took up time on stage when gamers were hoping to hear announcements or see gameplay of other big games.

Marvel Animation Squandering Another Good Animated Series

Marvel Animation had been on a hot streak. New animated shows based on the X-Men, Spider-Man and The Avengers were all excellent, with an emphasis on storytelling and quality animation that matched the levels of the DCAU.

Alas all good things must come to an end, and for some reason the Disney owned Marvel Animation department is very keen on killing its good things before their time. First it was Wolverine & the X-Men which actually got a second season order before getting canned, then The Spectacular Spider-Man had it’s run cut short to make room for a new, less good series.

Now the best Marvel Animated show yet devised , Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, is inexplicably ending too. Like Spider-Man before it, EMH is making way for an all new Avengers series called Avengers Assembled. Which based on the early promo images features a team very similar to the mega successful movie.

This makes little sense and reeks of a bad move. It would be one thing if Earth’s Mightiest Heroes didn’t feature key elements of the movie-verse, but all of the established heroes all exist in the EMH‘s universe already, and with the rotating nature of the team in season two, it would have been very simple for the show creators to shape the show into the movie’s image.

But whats done is done, Earths Mightiest Heroes finishes its second run this year with Avengers Assemble beginning sometime in 2013.

‘Star Wars: The Clone Wars’ Season Five Trailer Showcases Tons of Awesome

The prequel trilogy is what it is. They work in their own right, but fail to really capture the spirit of the original trilogy. Interestingly enough it has been the side Star Wars products released in the wake of the prequels that have really nail the essence of the originals.

Chief among these ancillary projects has been the Clone Wars cartoon series which has excelled as Star Wars fiction. The fifth season of the animated series is on the way and a new trailer has been unleashed to promise a year of action, spectacle, and Darth Maul.

The show has been gaining momentum from the start, but recently has really kicked it into a new gear. It is almost a shame that the show is confined to the clone war era because at the end of the day it all still happens before Revenge of the Sith, this show would be a killer format to bridge the gap between the two trilogies.

The trailer has lots of action and the one thing that has been seemingly missing from the franchise for a long time, a sense of artistic purpose. It feels like the people behind the series actually want to be telling you this story they are working on, not just pushing out a product by a deadline.

You can enjoy the trailer after the jump and the new season this fall.
