New Trailer For ‘The Newsroom’ Confirms This Show Looks Great

Aaron Sorkin’s TV work has been fabulous. Obviously The West Wing is his shining achievement, but I like to think his best work was SportsNight. A behind the scenes look at a SportsCenter type show at the hight of ESPN’s flagship program’s popularity.

So when HBO decided to run with a show that had a very similar structure penned by Sorkin you can imagine my excitement. The Newsroom replaces the more laid back and goofy environment of a cable sports program and replaces it with the far more juicy cable news program, sounds like a winner of an idea:

The Newsroom,  a behind-the-scenes look at the people who make a nightly cable-news program. Focusing on a network anchor (played by Jeff Daniels), his new executive producer (Emily Mortimer), the newsroom staff (John Gallagher, Jr., Alison Pill, Thomas Sadoski, Olivia Munn, Dev Patel) and their boss (Sam Waterston), the series tracks their quixotic mission to do the news well in the face of corporate and commercial obstacles-not to mention their own personal entanglements.

In case people were still on the fence, HBO has just released a new promo that really hammers home the Sorkin feel for the characters. The cast is impeccable, the concept is rock solid, and the promise of rich, well-written characters seems to have been realized. The checklist looks to be complete for another stellar show.

The show premieres June 24th on HBO and you can check out the new trailer after the jump.

‘In The Army Again’ Is Something That Might Actually Happen

OK, the likelihood of this story actually fermenting into an actual film is pretty slim, but it is still fun to dream. In The Army Now is Pauly Shore’s third best film, behind Son-in-Law and Biodome, which is kind of like saying it is a one-hit wonder’s third best song. But I think there is merit in the idea.

Recently during Andy Dick’s internet talk show Pauly and Andy were waxing poetic about heading back to the Army in a sequel to their mid-90s comedy:

Pauly Shore loved the idea. “We just need a script and someone to back the project and I’m in.”… Billionaire and FilmOn.TV CEO Alki David jumped in, “I’ll back it if both of you star in it.” Right there streaming live, film history was made. Andy Dick says a treatment is already written and they will be writing the script as soon as possible.

So yeah, not an imminent green-light, but some fun potential none-the-less. A lot of places online will tell you how horrible this idea is, but here on The Flickcast we want to share a more positive perspective. Andy Dick and Pauly Shore were popular and fun back in the day, and recently both have fallen on harder times. A return to that era might do them some good, and if they can drag Lori Petty and David Allen Greer out of obscurity too, then we all win right?

Amazon Instant Video Now on XBox 360

If you’re an XBox 360 user and have always been a bit jealous of your PS3-using friends who get to take advantage of streaming media with their Amazon Prime accounts, your day has come. That’s right, today Amazon announced and made available an Amazon Instant Video app for the Xbox 360.

The new app gives Prime subscribers access to streaming content, and can be downloaded via the Xbox 360 Dashboard. To take full advantage of this new app and stream content you need to be an Xbox Live Gold member and also an Amazon Prime member.

If you meet that criteria you can get access to over 17K TV shows and films. While that may not seem like a lot of selection given the amount of content available through Netflix or via Apple’s iTunes store, it’s still quite a bit to choose from.

Plus, with Amazon’s recent deal with Paramount and the addition of those movies, Amazon’s selection is getting better all the time. Although, some may wonder why why you would want to pay for two services just to get “free” content, and that’s a good question.

New Images from Tarantino’s ‘Django Unchained’ Arrive Online

With a few directors working in Hollywood today, you never really know what to expect and that makes their films even more fun to watch. One such director is Quentin Tarantino who’s upcoming Django Unchained promises to be very unexpected indeed.

Previously, we brought you some stills from the upcoming film. And now, there’s more. This time around we get a better look at the actors and a shot of the director in action, which is always fun.

In case you’re not familar with the film, it’s set two years before the Civil War and focuses on a former slave called Django (Jamie Foxx) who must join forces with a ruthless German bounty hunter called Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz) to free his captive wife from the clutches of evil plantation owner Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio).   See what I mean, unexpected.

Check out all the new pics after the break. Look for Django Unchained to hit theaters Christmas Day.

Apple Announces WWDC 2012 Keynote Date and Time

With all the advancements in technology coming along the last few years, especially from Apple, whenever the company has an event of any kind. it’s big news. Following that is the announcement today that Apple has officially confirmed the Worldwide Developers Conference keynote will be held at 10:00AM on June 11th at Moscone West in San Francisco.

The news of a keynote for this Apple Developer event isn’t very surprising considering they have one every year. What is somewhat surprising, however, is that the company has not confirmed who will be delivering said keynote.

In the past, Apple Co-Founder and CEO Steve Jobs did the honors. Since his passing, new CEO Tim Cook has taken over. This time around, though, with no confirmation forthcoming, it’s anyone’s guess.

Of course, it could just be that Apple hasn’t announced the keyote speaker yet because they are still working out the details. Or, and this is a scenario I prefer to believe, they are working on something really amazing for the event.

My vote for what this amazing thing could be: Hologram Steve Jobs.

Game Review: ‘Battleship’ for XBox 360

When movie makers started taking toy lines from twenty years ago and made it into movies like Transformers or G.I. Joe, the concepts at least made sense. But when Battleship was announced that it was coming to the big screen, the only thing more frightening than what would appear on screen was the chance that a game adaptation of the film might be made as well. Traditionally movie tie-in games are quick cash ins to coincide with the film’s release, a few exceptions being the much beloved Spider-Man 2 or X-Men Origins: Wolverine games. Now, a strategy game that started on a table top using red and white peg and miniature ships has made its way to the world of movie tie-in first person shooters.

Gameplay

Battleship consists of two main gameplay aspects. Where players will spend most of their time is in a traditional military FPS. While traversing the tropical beaches of Hawaii, players’ choices are limited to three human weapons, a pistol, a shotgun and a carbine, two alien weapons, one resembling a turret gun and another similar to a sniper rifle, and grenades. The lack of variety of weapons or just the sheer lack of different weapons is disappointing as it doesn’t feel like the game really gives a player the opportunity to progress and earn better items. In terms of control, the game moves and shoots in a fairly standard manner, not doing much to try and set itself apart from other shooter combat scenarios but still at least getting the basics right.

Box Office Report: ‘Men in Black III’ Scores Over Memorial Day Weekend

Traditionally the long Memorial Day weekend marked the start of the Summer movie season. In the last decade that unofficial date has shifted to the beginning of May, but this is still a marquee weekend for film. And what better way to celebrate that than with the return of one of cinema’s biggest stars.

Will Smith hasn’t been in a movie in nearly four years, and his return also marks the return of one of his most beloved characters, Agent J. Men in Black III had a solid debut bringing in $70 Million over the four-day weekend. That comes in a bit below expectations, but ranks as a strong debut none-the-less considering where the franchise was.

While not an actual reboot, the sequel actually proves that the Men in Black universe is still capable of being an entertaining summer destination. The movie also did well overseas, but only doing well is not what Sony was hoping for. If this franchise makes its way to a fourth installment positive word of mouth is going to have to give this film some legs.

Speaking of hot gams, The Avengers might have dropped to second place, but it still managed to impress. Bringing in over $46 Million over the extra long frame represented a very slight dip for the film. This was extra impressive when you consider Men in Black is direct competition for its target audience.
