Jim Caviezel to Play Stallone’s Villain in ‘The Tomb’

The Tomb is quickly shaping up to be an Expendables-level action extravaganza. With the casting of Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzennegger as the protagonists of The Tomb, many foresaw issues with finding a villainous actor great enough to compete with the two most recognizable action stars on the planet.

With casting revealed by producer Mark Canton (300, Immortals) on The Mathew Aaron show, any questions as to whether they’d find a good enough actor to counter Stallone and Schwarzennegger can now be quelled.  In a great bit of casting, “[Jim] Caviezel will be playing the role of the warden of the prison in which Schwarzenegger & Stallone attempt to escape from.”

The Tomb follows Ray Breslin (Stallone) who is the world’s foremost authority on structural security. He’s analyzed every high security prison and has gained a vast array of survival skills. But all Ray’s ingenuity and knowledge are about to be put to work in the most challenging test he’s ever faced: escaping from the master prison of his own design.

Happy President’s Day 2012

Today is a day in the US when we honor those leaders who made a difference in our country’s history. So, for today we will all be out doing pretty much anything else besides work.

Even though we don’t like it, we sometimes have to let the team out of their rooms and out into the world. Don’t worry, it’s only for a few hours. We’ll be back tomorrow.

For those of you not in the US please, enjoy your Monday. For those who are, enjoy this day of rest.

“Angry Birds Space” Announced

Angry Birds may be a simple game, but with over 12 million downloads on the App Store alone, it’s the biggest name in mobile gaming. Which is why I’m really excited to learn that the newest version of the high-flying poultry puzzle game will be in space.

That’s right, Angry Birds Space. SPACE. I LOVE space.

The game’s developer, Rovio, has posted a website for the game, with an image of a slingshot on the moon and the words One small fling for a bird, one quantum leap for birdkind” underneath.

Thinking about it, Angry Birds is a game about physics and gravity. Knocking down different pieces of the environment is key to finishing levels and obtaining high scores. So introducing zero-gravity into a game based around gravity is going to put an entirely new spin on it, and I think it’s a great way to take this already fantastic game to new heights (literally).

Angry Birds Space launches March 22nd. While you wait, you can check out Rovio’s website where you can download a new wallpaper and watch the teaser trailer after the jump.

Josh Duhamel Says ‘Transformers’ Moving Forward Without Any Original Stars

In an interview with E! Online, Transformers star Josh Duhamel revealed that he hasn’t been contacted about the fourth film of the Transformers series. According to the recent interview, none of the original series cast has been asked to return for the fourth film.

“I don’t think anybody’s doing it,” Duhamel told the site. “I know Shia [LaBoeuf]’s not doing it. I don’t think Tyrese or Rosie [Huntington-Whiteley] or anybody else is doing it.”

He’s not surprised about the silence, though. “Whenever these movies make that much money they’re going to make as many as they can,” he said. “[But] I haven’t heard anything about it. They haven’t called me.”

The plan now is to reboot the series, which means they can dump all those now-expensive stars and make some new ones. This is following the foot steps of the Spiderman reboot, The Amazing Spiderman. The popularity of the series is not based on the star power of the actors and actresses, but rather the Transformers themselves, as proven by the success of the last film even without star Megan Fox.

‘Breaking Bad’ Alum Giancarlo Esposito to Guest Star on ‘Community’

I’m always excited for NBC’s Thursday night comedy line-up, but lately something is missing. While Parks and Recreation has become one of the funniest shows on television, The Office just isn’t what it used to be, 30 Rock is winding down, and Community is on “hiatus” with no return date in sight.

However, the Community cast and crew is still hard at work filming. Joining the lineup of the already all-star cast and guest stars is Giancarlo Esposito, known best for his spectacular performance as Gus in AMC’s Breaking Bad.

In Community, Esposito will guest star as Gilbert, a long-time employee of Pierce’s deceased and super racist father Cornelius Hawthorne. Not much more is known except that Gilbert has some news concerning Pierce’s inhertiance, which should be sure to cause some hilarious hijynxs for our favorite students at Greendale Community College. Esposito is an amazing actor but we’ve only really seen him as super serious Gus, so it’ll be interesting to see him take on a more comedic role.

So far, there’s no concrete details on if, or when Community will return to NBC. And while it’s awesome that remaining epsiodes are still being shot and could just end up straight to DVD, I hope the show comes back on the air. In the meantime, we’ll just have to make do with little tidbits of news like this, as well as the rest of the Thursday night lineup, which is still pretty funny.

Writer Simon Kinberg Says ‘X-Men: First Class’ Sequel to be More About Magneto

Those of you who caught last year’s break-out superhero film, X-Men: First Class, most likely developed a totally normal man-crush for a certain featured actor in the film. Believe it or not, it wasn’t for former heartthrobs James McAvoy or Kevin Bacon. The standout role in the film clearly went to Michael Fassbender, who played Eric “Call me Magneto” Lensherr.

Fassbender was slightly less known before the role, and is quickly becoming a big player in the competition for leading man in Hollywood. It seems that even First Class scribe Simon Kinberg agrees, and plans on expanding Fassbender’s story a bit more for the proposed sequel which he’s working on now. From MTV.

What’s what was so cool about the first one and what we want to continue. Magneto becomes the villain ultimately of the franchise but he’s a much more complicated character as a young man. He’s someone you sympathize with, you care about you root for even though might not necessarily agree with his methods, you understand his philosophy.

Film Review: ‘This Means War’

The line that got the biggest laugh at my screening of This Means War was not in the film. It was uttered by colleague Pete Sobczynski. The print cut out two minutes in on the line “Remember: This is a covert mission,” immediate cut to black, cue Pete shouting out, “Oh come on! It can’t be that covert!” At which point Chicago Film Critics Association President Dann Gire nominated Pete for the Roger Ebert Award for Best Witticism. He deserves to win.

So what does this moderate digression have to do with This Means War? It was one of two times I laughed – the other was a throwaway gag where one character asks why the love interest (Reese Witherspoon) is talking to that old man (Chelsea Handler).

This Means War tries to mash two genres and succeeds in making both of them boring. The first is the dreaded rom-com. In this case, a love triangle between two men and one woman. The second is action-spy-thriller, as the two men work together for the CIA. That they’re all but suspended from duty in the first five minutes of the movie is not a good sign.

‘Awake’ Pilot Available Online Now, Two Weeks Before TV Premiere

In an effort to raise awareness, NBC’s Awake is the latest series pilot to be put online ahead of the series premiere to drum up interest. In a part of a growing trend, the opening episode of the parallel universe drama starring Jason Isaacs is being made available 2 weeks before the series’ premiere on March 1.

This comes one day after the network put out the first seven minutes of the mid-season replacement series. The show is created by Kyle Killen (Lone Star) and also executive produced by Howard Gordon (24, Homeland).

A similar tactic was used for Smash, which premiered Feb. 6 to 11.4 million total viewers and a 3.8 rating following The Voice. NBC released the first episode for the “making of a Broadway musical” show beginning Jan. 16 via digital platforms, three weeks before it launched. The network also screened the pilot in select cities.

Awake makes its way to the small screen Thursday, March 1 at 10 p.m., taking over the slot previously occupied by Prime Suspect and The Firm, the latter now airing on Saturdays.

Awake centers on police detective Michael Britten (Isaacs) who finds himself living in two realities after a brutal car accident, one where his wife Hannah (Laura Allen) is alive and the other where his son Rex (Dylan Minnette) is.

Watch the full pilot after the jump.
