Happy 27th Birthday Macintosh

It’s an historic day Apple fans as we look back 27 years ago at the first time Apple unveiled the Macintosh computer to the world. Steve Jobs introduced the revolutionary Mac on January 24, 1984 to a crowd of around 3000 people and, needless to say, they were quite enthusiastic about it.

The original Apple Macintosh was the first personal computer to run the Mac operating system, then known as System 1.0. It featured impressive (for the time) specs including a 9-inch greyscale monitor, an 8 MHz processor with 128 K of RAM and no internal hard drive, just a floppy. It did, however, feature a really cool rectangular mouse, which you can see in the photo above.

The price? $2495. Which seemed high then and seems really high now. Good thing prices have come down, at least a little. To celebrate, check out the video of Jobs revealing the new Mac after the jump.

As someone who uses a Macintosh every day (I’m writing this on one right now) I thank you Steve Jobs and the entire Mac team for inventing this great machine. Here’s to 27 more years.

Box Office: Natalie Portman Cleans Up

Natalie Portman continues to impress, as she has not one, but two films in the top ten this week.  The romantic comedy No Strings Attached, featuring Portman and Ashton Kutcher, nabbed the top spot at the box office over the weekend by selling about $20.3 M in tickets. The film is directed by Ivan Reitman, and is the first movie starring Portman to win the box office since 2006, when she starred in V For Vendetta. It attracted a mostly female audience, typical for a romantic comedy.

Black Swan, the psychological thriller, was her second film to place in the top ten. Coming in at number six, the movie picked up $6.2 M in its eighth week in release, bringing its box office total to $83.5 M. If the film picks up a few Oscar nominations (announced on Tuesday morning), it is sure to continue a steady march toward $100 M.

Last week’s winner, The Green Hornet, dropped off 46% from its opening week total.  It came in at number two this week with $18 M, bringing its two week total to $63 M.  It was a costly production to make ($120 M) so it still needs to sell quite a few seats to earn back its budget.

The Dilemma had an almost identical drop off, and made an additional $9.7 M. The King’s Speech is now in its 9th week of release, and only dropped 2% from last week. This is another film that will surely enjoy a boost from multiple Oscar nominations on Tuesday.

True Grit came in at number five with $8 M, making it the second highest grossing western of all time (Dances With Wolves holds the record).  The Housemaid, Barney’s Version, The Company Men, The Illusionist, and Another Year all fared nicely in limited release.

Kevin Smith To Self-Distribute ‘Red State’

Kevin Smith can’t seem to get a break. Sure, things were great back when Clerks blew up and his deal with Mirimax helped him form a career. But between his issues with Dogma and the church, getting an audience for Clerks 2, the problems with getting Zack and Miri Make A Porno and the trouble with Cop Out,  the guy can’t seem to get a break lately in Hollywood.

Yesterday, Smith brought his newest project, the horror film Red State, to Sundance and had planned on a public auction for the film’s distribution immediately after the screening. He later decided that he was going to distribute the film itself to prove that the indie film world still held strong.

So, for a whopping $20, Smith bought the film from himself, and is now planning on taking the flick on the road with a very grassroots plan to get awareness and make back the film’s $4 million budget. From THR:

The film will go out via Smith’s SModcast with no marketing spend, though he said that he will talk to “any smart exhibitor” about potentially showing the movie.

“We are going to make our money back by going out on the road and going city by city,” said Smith. The tour will begin March 5 at Radio City Music Hall in New York City and make a stop at Midland Theater in Kansas City one week later.

David E. Kelly’s ‘Wonder Woman’ Heads to NBC

If you’ve been following the latest news about the David E. Kelly Wonder Woman TV series you know it was conceived by the writing/producing veteran and then went out to networks looking for a home. At that time, it didn’t look like it was going to be successful at finding one and was going to be put on hold for a while.

Cut to today and it seems the show will find a home after all — at least in pilot form. How, you may wonder? Well, it seems new NBC entertainment president Bob Greenblatt decided he’s a fan of Kelly’s show and ordered a pilot.

According to reports, and differing from what we had heard before, the show is a “reinvention” of the comic character and features Wonder Woman (aka Diana Prince) as a vigilante crime fighter in L.A. but also a successful corporate executive and a modern woman trying to balance all the elements of her life. Mmm, it sounded better when it seemed the show was going to be more faithful to the original source material. Now it sounds more like Ally McBeal with superpowers.

Not that that’s necessarily a bad thing and it should have been expected given Kelly’s track record of shows featuring strong female characters. A lot of things still have to happen before the show makes it to the air so we’ll just keep an eye on this one and see what develops. Besides, now that it looks like the show may actually get going, we can start speculating and suggesting on much more important topics such as who should play the title character.

What do you guys think? Who should play Wonder Woman in the new series?

Apple’s App Store Hits 10 Billion Downloads

When word first surfaced of an App store for iOS devices, some people were probably skeptical about its potential for success. Those same people now have to concede that the store has become not just a success but an unqualified juggernaut for Apple.

Now, just over a week since Apple posted their 10 billion App Store download counter, they’ve hit that milestone and sold and/or delivered 10 billion apps to customers. Yes, that’s a lot of apps — not to mention a lot of money.

With the immense popularity of the iPad, the iPhone and its impending release for Verizon, we can only imagine that it won’t take nearly as long to reach the 20 billion mark. Apple plans to release the identity of the person who downloaded the 10 billionth app within a few days.

I wonder if it was me? That could be interesting to say the least.

New ‘Google Offers’ Service Aims to Compete with Groupon and LivingSocial

A few months ago, Google’s $6 Billion offer was roundly rejected by the object of the Internet giant’s overture: Groupon.com, a web-based local deals service who instead is preparing its own $15 Billion IPO. Fast-forward to today and Mashable has an exclusive report on Google’s attempts to compete in this important local niche.

According to the documents being leaked today, Google is preparing to beta their competing service, dubbed ‘Google Offers’ which in a similar manner to sites like LivingSocial.com, Groupon.com and an array of similar services, will offer local pre-paid offers to subscribers of the service. As of a few hours ago, it appears Google has officially validated the rumors with a prepared statement.

Google is communicating with small businesses to enlist their support and participation in a test of a pre-paid offers/vouchers program. This initiative is part of an ongoing effort at Google to make new products, such as the recent Offer Ads beta, that connect businesses with customers in new ways. We do not have more details to share at this time, but will keep you posted.

New ‘Red Riding Hood’ Trailer Arrives

It’s nice to see Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke keeps getting more work. Plus, she has decided to stay in the same neighborhood as Twilight and bring a tale of a young girl’s encounters with a wolf to the big screen.

Of course we’re talking about the upcoming adaptation of Red Riding Hood. Here’s the official Warner Bros. synopsis:

Valerie (Amanda Seyfried) is a beautiful young woman torn between two men. She is in love with a brooding outsider, Peter (Shiloh Fernandez), but her parents have arranged for her to marry the wealthy Henry (Max Irons). Unwilling to lose each other, Valerie and Peter are planning to run away together when they learn that Valerie’s older sister has been killed by the werewolf that prowls the dark forest surrounding their village.

For years, the people have maintained an uneasy truce with the beast, offering the creature a monthly animal sacrifice. But under a blood red moon, the wolf has upped the stakes by taking a human life. Hungry for revenge, the people call on famed werewolf hunter, Father Solomon (Gary Oldman), to help them kill the wolf.

But Solomon’s arrival brings unintended consequences as he warns that the wolf, who takes human form by day, could be any one of them. As the death toll rises with each moon, Valerie begins to suspect that the werewolf could be someone she loves. As panic grips the town, Valerie discovers that she has a unique connection to the beast–one that inexorably draws them together, making her both suspect…and bait.

Scary. Check out the trailer after the jump. Red Riding Hood comes to theaters on March 11th.
