Maggie Grace’s ‘Shannon’ Returning to ‘LOST’

With ABC’s LOST about to air its fourth episode of the final season next Tuesday, we’ve already seen the reappearance of a couple characters who disappeared or died. First, Charlie  (Dominic Monaghan) showed up in the alterative timeline where the characters’ never went to the island, then Boone (Ian Somerhalder) made an appearance on the plane sitting near Locke and finally Claire (Emilie de Ravin) showed up in a cab with Kate.

Now, we can add Maggie Grace and her character Shannon to the list of characters making a reappearance on the show. If you recall, Shannon was killed during season two after her and Sayeed had expressed their feelings for each other. Now, Grace’s character will return for an unspecified number of episodes.

Of course, the show’s producers are keeping her story under wraps but rest assured, it will be something interesting. . . especially for Sayeed. Also, in case you’re keeping track, Harold Perrineau, Cynthia Watros, and Rebecca Mader are among the other dearly departed who will appear in LOST’s sixth and final season.

What, no Ana Lucia?

Get A Sneak Peek at Tonight’s ‘Ghost Hunters International’ Finale

If you’ve been watching Syfy’s Ghost Hunters International you know the team has dealt with some pretty crazy stuff during this season. In truth, it’s probably never easy to deal with ghosts and tonight’s winter finale of the show is no exception.

In tonight’s episode entitled “The Legend of Rose Hall,” the team travels to Jamaica tracking the White Witch. In this preview, they set up some devices to track the movement of the ghost and also discuss several other techniques that help them in their work.

The show looks pretty interesting but I’ve always wondered why they shoot shows like this in the dark with a night vision camera. Do ghosts really know the difference between day and night or light and dark? Wouldn’t they still come out if their was light in the room? Just curious.

Anyway, check out the preview after the jump. The Ghost Hunters International season finale airs tonight at 9/8C on Syfy.

Western Wednesdays: ‘Ride in the Whirlwind’

Once upon a time, Jack Nicholson was a screenwriter. He has six films to his credit, and I’m not entirely sure why he stopped. Perhaps it took too much time away from being one of Hollywood’s most notorious bad boys.

Ride in the Whirlwind was his third script, as per IMDB, and his second collaboration with director Monte Hellman. It’s touted as being inspired by “actual frontier journals.” After sitting through the weird and lonely experience, I’ve decided that means Nicholson paid a lot of attention to how horses were saddled, how uncomfortable boots were, and how people ate a lot of biscuits.

Ride in the Whirlwind has a fervent cult following because of its sparse realism, and the fact that it feels like it could have happened. There’s truth to that. There are a lot of great little details here (cowboy boots being unfit for hiking), and it’s certainly devoid of epic shootouts, squinting close-ups, and prostitutes with hearts of gold. It has a lot of atmosphere on a tiny budget, undoubtedly due to the guidance of Roger Corman.

But I’m not convinced Ride in the Whirlwind is deserving of such lavish underground praise. This film is far from poetry. The characters aren’t interesting, the performances (except for Nicholson’s) are weak, and a lot of the dialogue is pretty corny. A lean script isn’t necessarily a brilliant one, and it doesn’t always make for compelling viewing.

Kevin Eubanks, John Melendez Not Returning To Leno’s ‘Tonight Show’

While most of us are still railing after the Conan/NBC/Leno debacle, plans are still underway for Leno’s return to the illustrious Tonight Show host position on March 1st. However, not all is smooth sailing with the show. Word is coming in that band leader Kevin Eubanks, who served as Leno’s “number 1” for a massive 17 years, will be leaving the show along with announcer John Melendez.

Eubanks originally planned to remain on as Leno’s bandleader when he returned to the Tonight Show, but it looks like he’s now having a change of heart. From Variety:

Eubanks is said to be interested in returning to touring and working out a flexible schedule with the “Tonight Show.” Whether that means he’ll leave for good — or take lengthy leaves of absence, as Conan O’Brien band leader Max Weinberg did to tour with Bruce Springsteen — has not yet been worked out, NBC insiders said.

Eubanks joined the “Tonight Show” band in 1992, and replaced Branford Marsalis as band leader in 1995. When Leno moved to “The Jay Leno Show,” Eubanks became the leader of the renamed “Primetime Band.”

NBC has not yet looked for Eubanks’ replacement. (An online rumor that Hootie and the Blowfish frontman Darius Rucker would replace him was quickly shot down by all involved.) As for Melendez, he took on a behind-the-scenes role as writer, and will continue that position.

TV Review: ‘The Ricky Gervais Show: Episode 1’

I guess it’s only natural that one of the most successful podcasts out there (and if that sounds like a dubious distinction, the BBC reported that in 2006 The Ricky Gervais Show podcast had received a staggering 8,000,000 downloads) would get its own show…though for reasons I’ll go into in a bit, I’m not entirely sure why.

The new HBO show, which premieres February 19th but is currently available for free download on iTunes, features flash animations of Office and Extras creators Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant antagonizing their co-host Karl Pilkington for his inane and often outlandish beliefs.

Episode #1 opens with Gervais and Merchant systematically debunking Pilkington’s assertion that technology reached its peak sometime around the turn of the 19th Century. “What about planes?” Merchant counters, “they let you go on holiday all over the world.” “No,” Pilkington shoots back, “because you go to places where if you don’t get a shot beforehand, you can die.”

Next Pilkington proposes a biological “advance” that would allow older women to have children the moment they died. “Who would take care of them?” Merchant usefully asks.

The Flickcast – Episode 44: Get LOST

This week on The Flickcast Chris and Matt work alone and without a net covering all kinds of new topics including Toy Fair 2010, the box office success of Valentine’s Day and The Wolfman and new adaptation announcements such as Dean Koontz’s Frankenstein and Dracula (aka Vlad the Impaler). They also discuss the oddness and length of recent movie titles, the Avatar prequel novel, the potential endings for ABC’s Lost and who rules Bartertown.

They both also made some good picks again this week incuding Matt’s pick of Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant and Chris’ pick of the Martin Scorsese gangster classic Goodfellas, featuring Ray Liotta, Joe Pesci and Robert De Niro.

As always, if you have comments, questions, critiques, offers of sponsorship or whatever, feel free to hit us up in the comments, on Twitter, at Facebook and MySpace or via email.

Toy Fair 2010: New Movie Toys

This week in New York City, the annual Toy Fair convention hits the Jacob Javits Center and thousands of new and popular toys and toy properties are shown off. There were, of course, some less-than-interesting booths, but we know what you want to see, so we went straight to the newest lines of toys and statues based on some of the upcoming movie and TV properties.

Obviously, Toy Story 3 had a huge presence at the show, given the fact that it’s the best hybrid of toys and film out there today. Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland had some great new figures of the whacked out Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter. LEGO stepped up their game with some brand new LEGO Star Wars playsets, including a great “Luke on Hoth” scene.

Diamond was also in attendence with some great new Ghostbusters products, including a new Ghostbusters replica sign for those hardcore fans. Finally, there were some great new 12-inch figures for the upcoming Jonah Hex film, including our first look at John Malkovich from the film.

Check out our Movie Toys picture gallery from the show after the jump, and be sure to check back in tomorrow to see what else we’ve got to show you from this year’s Toy Fair.
