Game Review: ‘Gears of War 3’ for XBox 360

Since its release back in 2006, the Gears of War series has been met with both fanatic praise and scornful rejection. Some boast that it “redefined the third-person shooter,” while others claim it only furthers the stereotype of gamers as meat-headed blood junkies. Whatever your stance on the franchise is, the third and (possibly) final chapter of the trilogy is here – and credit must be given where it’s due.

The development team at Epic Games end the story of Marcus Fenix and the rest of Delta Squad with a bang – both in the single-player / co-op campaign and across the online battlefield. From graphic updates to fine-tuning combat controls to completely redesigning one of the most popular multiplayer modes in recent history, all of the pieces of this blood-spattered puzzle fall gloriously into place.

Ninjas Take on Frankenstein & Dracula in the Upcoming Flick ‘Ninjas Vs. Monsters’

Today’s audience loves when things fight. Whether is Jason and Freddy, Aliens and Predators, or Kramers and Kramers. People can’t seem to get enough “fiction on fiction” action. That’s mainly why Spike’s Deadliest Warrior is such an addictive and popular show.

With that in mind, Endlight Entertainment, the fine folks that brought us films like Ninjas Vs. Vampires and Ninjas Vs. Zombies, is bringing us the final film in the Ninjas trilogy: Ninjas Vs. Monsters! Here’s the press release to explain more of this fun project.

Activision Announces Pre-Order Bonuses for ‘Spider-Man: Edge of Time’ and ‘X-Men: Destiny’

Activision announced pre-order bonuses late last week for their upcoming titles ‘Spider-Man: Edge of Time’ and ‘X-Men: Destiny’. Depending on which retailer you choose to reserve your copy (or copies) from, you’ll receive a different and unique bonus item for each game. Web-headed fans will receive a bonus in-game suit, while X-Men players will get an exclusive X-Gene to further develop their arsenal of mutant abilities.

For those pre-ordering Spider-Man from Best Buy, you’ll get the Big Time suit – based on the outfit from the comic series of the same name. Gamers who reserve via Amazon.com receive a code to unlock the alienesque black and white Future Foundation Spidey suit, and lastly anyone pre-ordering with Gamestop will receive a whopping four alternate costumes from the Identity Crisis storyline.

The bonus codes for ’X-Men: Destiny,’ on the other hand, unlock more than just a fancy change of pants. Pre-order unlocks for this title grant you access to otherwise unavailable mutant X-Genes: from Best Buy come the powers of the unstoppable Juggernaut; Amazon offers Emma Frosts diamond-clad telepathic abilities, and codes from Gamestop will unlock the plamsa-blasting X-Gene of Havok.

Second ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ Trailer Arrives

Today, Sony released the second trailer for David Fincher’s Americanization of the Stieg Larsson novel and Swedish movie The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Yes, I know, we don’t usually like remakes around here, especially of perfectly good movies that only came out a coupler years ago.

Let Me In I’m talking to you. However, when we take into consideration the people involved in this production, we have to give it a chance.

After all, the film is directed by David Fincher, written by Steve Zallian and has music by Trent Reznor. Plus, it stars Daniel Craig and the talented Rooney Mara who was terrific in Fincher’s The Social Network.

And then we’ve got this new trailer. If you have any doubts this movie is going to be very good indeed, this new trailer should put those to rest.

Liam Neeson Boxes Wolves in the Trailer for ‘The Grey’

Liam Neeson just can’t seem to stop doing bad ass things. Between chasing down a boat on foot in Taken, releasing the Kraken in Clash of the Titans, kicking Batman’s ass as Ra’s Al Ghul, or just being Qui Gon Jinn, he doesn’t seem to have any downtime. Continuing in that theme, he’s now going to fight a pack of wolves with his hands.

That’s right, he’s in a brand new flick called The Grey in which he takes on a pack of pissed off wolves. And fights them…hand to hand. Here’s the quick premise.

In Alaska, an oil drilling team struggle to survive after a plane crash strands them in the wild. Hunting the humans are a pack of wolves who see them as intruders.

If the premise doesn’t sell you, the money shot is clearly Neeson using broken bottles as makeshift knuckles as he sets his sights on some wolves in the snow that shouldn’t have messed with him.

Be ready for the action in the trailer after the jump, and catch The Grey in theaters on January 27th.

DC Comics Reboot Review: ‘Batman #1’

There’s an old adage that says, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” If there was any character in the DC Universe that didn’t need a reboot, it was Batman. Batman had been strong before the reboot.

He fought Darkseid, traveled through time, discovered his lost son, Damian, and founded Batman Inc., an international corporation devoted to stopping crime funded by his alter ego, Bruce Wayne. The stories and characters of the Batman mythos did not need a reboot.

So how is Batman in the New 52 DC Universe?

I’m pleased to report that he is still awesome. In fact, Batman hasn’t changed much at all post-reboot. His costume is different, but every detail of his story is exactly the same as it was before the relaunch.

Batman #1 is truly meant for old comic fans, and people who have never read a comic before but know who Batman is. Although, the writer could have spent a little more time explaining who the various Robins were; the book does use a clever exposition device that gives you their name, their current code name, and their relation to Batman.

First Full Clip from ‘Batman: Year One’ Arrives

We’ve already brought you the first stills and first trailer from Warner Premiere’s upcoming animated film Batman: Year One. Now, we’re pleased to be able to bring you the first full clip from the movie for your animated Batman enjoyment.

In the clip, we get further evidence that even though this doesn’t have the big budget of the next Chris Nolan Batman, Warner is still taking this very seriously. In short, it looks pretty awesome.

Here’s the scoop on the film:

Batman: Year One is based on the 1987 comic from Frank Miller and illustrator David Mazzucchelli. The film depicts young Bruce Wayne’s return to Gotham City in his first attempts to fight injustice as a costumed vigilante. The playboy billionaire chooses the guise of a giant bat to combat crime, creates an early bond with a young Lieutenant James Gordon (who is already battling corruption from inside the police department), inadvertently plays a role in the birth of Catwoman, and helps to bring down a crooked political system that infests Gotham.

Like I said, awesome. Adding to that awesome even more is the great cast assembled to do the voices for the film, which includes Bryan Cranston (Gordon), Ben McKenzie (Bruce Wayne/Batman), Eliza Dushku (Catwoman) and Katee Sackhoff (Detective Essen). The film arrives October 18 on Blu-ray, On Demand and for Download.
