Comics: Check Out a Preview of Steve Niles’ ‘Breath of Bones’

SteveNilesBreathofBones-Crop

In the comics world, writer Steve Niles has enjoyed (and does enjoy) a tremendous amount of success and respect. His major work, 30 Days of Night, was a master class in creating a high-concept yet deeply poignant and horrifically scary comic.

His latest creation, Breath of Bones, looks to be carrying on the fine tradition established by 30 Days of Night. The story is simple: The giant clay monster from Jewish legend goes on a Nazi-killing rampage in order to protect the inhabitants of a small Jewish stronghold and an injured British pilot.

But that’s where the simple ends. But to give away any more would be spoiling it for you. Instead, we’ve got some preview pages for you to enjoy.

Look for Breath of Bones #1 in stores June 12. Check out all the pages after the break.

Movies: First Trailer for ‘I, Frankenstein’ With Aaron Eckhart and Yvonne Strahovski Arrives

IF-1

Horror movies are a staple of Hollywood. So much so that they’re one of the most popular genres of all time. And now an upcoming movie is looking to take its place in the highest levels of the genre.

Said movie in question is I, Frankenstein, which pits gargoyles and demons against each other in the ultimate battle for immortality. From that description, the movie sounds a lot like a recent one that had vampires fighting werewolves.

Guess that could be because the producers of I, Frankenstein and Underworld are one in the same. Anyway, here’s a more complete description of I, Frankenstein‘s plot:

“Set in a dystopic present where vigilant gargoyles and ferocious demons rage in a battle for ultimate power, Victor Frankenstein’s creation Adam (Aaron Eckhart) finds himself caught in the middle as both sides race to discover the secret to his immortality.”

Check out the teaser after the break. Look for I, Frankenstein, which in addition to Eckhart stars Bill Nighy, Yvonne Strahovski, Miranda Otto, Jai Courtney and Aden Young, in theaters next January.

Tech: BlackBerry Messenger Coming to iOS and Android

bbm-logo-1

Not that long ago RIM’s BlackBerry was the most popular smartphone in the world. It’s a bit hard to believe now, with the immense popularity of the iPhone and Android devices, but at one time the BlackBerry was the king of the mobile world. I had several, and I loved them.

One of the features that made BlackBerry so popular, other than how well it handled email, was BlackBerry Messenger. In case you’re not familiar, BBM is a service that allows BlackBerry users to send direct messages, chat in real time and more. It works pretty much like Apple’s iMessage and FaceTime do in iOS or OS X.

Like iMessage and FaceTime, which are only available on Apple devices, BBM has always been BlackBerry-only. That is, until now.

RIM announced today that BBM will launch this Summer for Apple’s iPhone and for Android devices. The announcement came during the company’s BlackBerry Live conference, which is going on this week.

While I believe this will be a welcome development for some people still stuck in 2005, I need to ask this question: Who cares?

With other messaging services like iMessage, WhatsApp and Google’s upcoming Hangouts, this announcement isn’t going to make much of a difference to anyone. I don’t think it’s BBM on iOS or Android that’s going to bring people back to the BlackBerry in droves.

Sadly, at this point, I don’t think much of anything will.

Movies: First Trailer for ‘Now You See Me’ Appears

Now-You-See-Me_11

Magic is a great subject for movies. Take The Prestige or The Illusionist as recent examples of that. Sadly, it hasn’t been as successful at the box office as it could have been.

A new movie called Now You See Me is looking to change that. It’s got a great cast in Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Morgan Freeman, Isla Fisher, Mark Ruffalo and Michael Caine and tells the story of a group of illusionists who commit crimes using, of coure, their magic skills.

The twist is they give the money to the audience instead of keeping it for themselves. Interesting.

Check out the trailer after the break. Look for Now You See Me to arrive in theaters on May 31.

Fake PlayStation 4 Ad Puts the Internet Into a Frenzy

PS4-Fake-Cover

Yesterday, a video surfaced on a random YouTube page titled REVEAL PLAYSTATION 4 PS4 E3 2013 新しいプレイステーションE3プレゼ. Since most people over here in the US don’t read Japanese, they just assumed this as a mark of authenticity and speculation began running wild. Although later disproven when Sony, the king of “no comment”, actually remarked to Kotaku that the ad was a fake, the damage had been done and arguments had already began, friendships were ended and wars were started.

But why the debate? We have already seen what is arguably the most important aspect of the PlayStation 4 with the reveal and that was the gameplay. The only thing of significance “revealed” for the first time was the actual PS4 console. Does what the box itself looks like really matter? I don’t know about you but the box itself isn’t the visible focal point of my entertainment setup. While everything is either going into the XBox 360 or PlayStation 3, I never actually care to look at it as I am playing.

Geek: Commander Chris Hadfield Covers ‘Space Oddity’ — in Space

0513-SPACE-MUSIC-sized.jpg_full_600

We love space and everything to do with it. Give us a marathon of HBO’s From the Earth to the Moon or a late-night screening of Apollo 13, and we’re there. Heck, we even enjoy watching movies like Armageddon . . . sometimes.

So yeah, we like space. But our like kinda pales in comparison to how much this guy likes space. We’re talking about, of course, International Space Station Commander Chris Hadfield.

To say Commander Hadfield is cool would be a gross understatement. Just watch this video and you’ll see what we mean. We don’t even mind that he’s Canadian. We kid, we kid.

Enjoy.

Tech: Google Merges Storage for Drive, Gmail, G+ Photos

Google-Shared-Storage

Even though Google occasionally does things people don’t like (killing Google Reader comes to mind), they stil offer a host of great services that millions of people rely on each and every day. Last year, Google launched Google Drive, storage for your data in the cloud.

One thing that was odd about the service was how items and the storage in your Google Drive was separate from what you had in Gmail and in Google+. However, that’s all going to change as of today as Google announced that they are combining all the separate storage space and making it into one complete storage solution. All Google users now have a free 15GB of storage space across the three applications and Google Apps users will receive 30GB of space.

Google has also launched a new page to help you keep track of all your storage and what you’re suing it for. A pie chart will show you just how much space you are using in each app and how much that eats into your overall space. The options to upgrade to more storage are the same as they have always been, so if you see that you need more you can purchase it right there. This change will be rolling out over the next couple of weeks.
