Nintendo Might Be Launching The Wii U The Week Of Black Friday

Black Friday, the biggest shopping bonanza of the year. Virtually everyone has the day off and with retail stores doing sales on top of sales, going out to the store can be a mad house, especially if rumors are to be believed.

Go Nintendo has it from GameStop sources that the console will be launching the week of Black Friday. Based on Nintendo’s release pattern, that should put the Wii U in stores Sunday the 18th of November. Which gives Nintendo almost a full week and a half of mad house sales for their new console.

This release schedule makes sense both in Nintendo’s historical context, as well as in relation to third-party rumors that have been cropping up since E3. The major question that needs to be answered now is how well will the new system do, can the Wii U match the hysteria created by the original Wii?

It is had to guess with out the price point information just yet, but it is a safe bet to assume that the Wii U will sell out of its first shipment pretty quickly. What made the Wii such a phenomenon was that it couldn’t stay in stock for months. In January it was still hard to get a Wii, which was due in large part to a pretty genius strategy by Nintendo. Most stores would only get shipments of three or four systems, perpetually keeping shelves bare.

To recreate that Nintendo had better hope they can keep the Wii U price point low, and the demand high.

‘Expendables’ Producer Throws Some Big Time Names Around For A Possible Third Film

The concept behind The Expendables is admirable, mix together as many bad ass action super stars from the last three decades of film into one franchise. The cast list of the first film read like a who’s who of the greatest action talent, even going so far as to feature Arnold and Willis in cameos.

The second film, out this Friday, uped the ante with the original cast returning along with full roles for The Arnold, Bruce Willis and even Van Damme. As great as that group is how do you top it? Total Film had a chance to talk to the film’s producer Avi Lerner to ask that very question:

We’ve approached Clint Eastwood to be one of the guys, we’ve got a character in mind for him. We’re talking to Harrison Ford. [And we want] Wesley Snipes when he comes back from prison. I’ll give you one more name, we’ve got Nicolas Cage to play [one of the characters]… And we’re going to bring Mickey Rourke back, if he won’t be too crazy. I like Mickey. And of course, all the existing stars [will return]”

Wow, talk about reaching for the stars. Who knows if they will actually nail any of those guys, but it is good to see the producers won’t consider any action icon to big to approach. Which begs the question, when will they give Mel Gibson a call?

You can check out The Expendables 2 this week and stay tuned to The Flickcast for any testosterone riddled casting updates in the future.

Comics Legend Joe Kubert Passes Away at 85

Yesterday, the comics world lost one of its legends. Both an amazing artist and creator, Joe Kubert is one of the true icons in the world of comic illustration. Kubert’s career began in the 1940s and spanned up until 2011. Aside from being a major force behind iconic characters such as the golden and silver age Hawkman and then later Sgt. Rock, Kubert has been named as an influence to many of today’s top artists.

Some sources say that Joe got his start in comics at only 12 years old when he had the opportunity to ink a rush job for Archie for $5 a page, which was a hefty payday back in 1938. After attending Manhattan’s High School of Music and Art, Kubert made his way to All-American Comics (which would become DC Comics). In 1945, Joe would begin his first work on Hawkman in issue #62 of The Flash in 1945.

Joe would be a major proponent of 3D, producing Three Dimension Comics #1 which sold an astounding 1.2 million copies. In 1976, Joe would found the Kubert School which still exists to this day. During his career, Joe would receive multiple awards and be inducted into the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame in 1997 and the Eisner Hall of Fame in 1998

Box Office Report: A Franchise Is ‘Bourne’ Again

It is really hard to take a franchise away from what made it a success, especially when most people consider the lead actor the pivotal piece of the franchise. Yet that was the task of The Bourne Legacy, which was comfortable swapping lead actors, but not in giving that actor billing in the title.

From the Box Office perspective the risk paid-off as the Damonless sequel managed a very respectable $40+ Million in its opening weekend. The Bourne Legacy actually preformed on par with the first two Bourne films, it fell way off the heights of the last film, but with all the factors playing against the movie that has to be considered a major win.

Coming in third was, the also strong performing, The Campaign which pulled in $27 Million. The number looks small for a Will Ferrell summer comedy, but when you take into consideration the film is R-rated and it has a political subject matter, the film did really well. Most of the time R-rated comedies do not do Ted numbers, and political campaign films rarely make much money, so again context makes this weekend look like a win for the studio.

Kickstarter Watch: Bladepad

When we first got games on our cell phones, it was something to do to fill the time waiting in line at the bank or kill a few minutes when someone was late to meet you at the movies. There were only so many minutes you could stomach the slow moving and poorly animated versions of Snake or Tetris.

But as with all things tech, mobile phone games gave way to smart phone games which have the abilities to rival those of big screen content. While not everyone wants to keep a Nintendo 3DS or PlayStation Vita in their pocket, most people do have an iPhone or Android and they will play games on them. But the biggest weakness that some smart phone games still deal with are the controls.

While some games are perfect for touch or tilt controls like Angry Birds or Super Monkey Ball respectively, some genres don’t lend themselves to these mobile control schemes. Shooters and platformers require both twitch precision and a full view of the gaming environment but these are both lost when gaming comes to the mobile touch screen device.

Virtual D-Pads are constantly inaccurate and sometimes a game requires so many buttons that the player has to cover a quarter of the screen to access them all. The answer on how to remedy this is Bladepad.

Check Out Previews for This Sunday’s New Episode of ‘True Blood’

Some of you may be thinking that this season’s True Blood isn’t as good as previous ones. To that we say “Heck no.” We’re liking it just fine, thank you.

With only three more episodes to go for the season, things are really starting to heat up with loyalties being questioned, new alliances being formed and lots and lots of blood-soaked sex. We’re loving every minute of it.

Okay, not every minute. The Lafayette and Terry stories are kinda slowing things down, but I guess that’s what you get with an ensamble cast. Not everyone gets to be involved in the “A” story of vampire revolution.

Still, we’ll keep watching — if only to see what crazy shit Russell does next or how Eric is gonna punish the usurper who dares to sit in his chair at Fangtasia. To help get us (and you) ready for this Sunday’s new episode, we’ve got some previews for it. Find them, as usual, after the break,

True Blood airs Sunday at 9PM on HBO.

First Look at Daniel Day-Lewis In Spielberg’s ‘Abraham Lincoln’

Can British actor Daniel-Day Lewis pull of a convincing Abraham Lincoln? Check out the first officially released image from the upcoming biopic Lincoln after the break and judge for yourself. We’ve included a previous snapshot of the actor (above) for comparison.

There’s no question that Day-Lewis is one of the most versatile actors in Hollywood, but playing the iconic and beloved 16th President of the United States may prove to be his most scrutinized role to date. That being said, the new picture with Lewis in full costume and make-up is incredibly good. Even without the stovepipe hat, Day-Lewis looks very convincing. Let’s hope he’s just as good on screen as he is in a photo.

Lincoln follows the president in his final four months as the Union comes closer to victory in the Civil War and slavery is abolished. The Dreamworks/Disney film is directed by Steven Spielberg and is due out November 9.
