Timur Bekmambetov Wants To Get A ‘Wanted’ Sequel Off The Ground

Wanted is a fun film, it is visually splendid and is filled with lots of talented actors who all seemed like they are having a good time. So it was no surprise that the film was a success and talks began quickly of a sequel, talks that unfortunately went nowhere due to the rather final fates of most of the main characters.

Indiewire recently chatted with Wanted director Timur Bekmambetov who thinks he has finally cracked the code:

“An unbelievable thing happened three weeks ago,” Bekmambetov said. “Because we stopped, we didn’t know what to do for three or four years. Three weeks ago I came up with a great idea and I pitched this idea and everybody fell in love with it. And now I think we’re on track. Right now the writer is working on the script, and it will be shocking.”

It sounds like Bekmambetov is excited about what he has come up with. The original film set up an interesting universe to play around in, even if it was not at all like the original source material in any way. Mayhaps the sequel can touch upon the concept of a world run by Super Villains like in the comic.

Bekmabetov’s new film Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter hits theaters Friday.

Peter Cullen, the Voice of Optimus Prime, Talks ‘Transformers: Fall of Cybertron’

After being pulled away from the G1 experience because of the movie tie-in for the third Michael Bay abomination, the team at High Moon Studios brings us back to Cybertron to continue the epic they began with Transformers: War for Cybertron. This time, they came back with more of what people loved about G1 including the Dinobots and the voices of both Optimus Prime and Grimlock. Alongside Gregg Berger who brings back the iconic voice of Grimlock, Peter Cullen will be reprising the role that he made famous with Optimus Prime

In the interview trailer below, Cullen talks about the character of Optimus and the differences in recording for the cartoon, the movie and the game. It is very notable that Cullen heavily praises the game’s story and it seems that he feels a lot more investment in the character through Transformers: Fall of Cybertron than he did with the movie.

From the look of things in this trailer, it appears there will be a head on confrontation between Optimus and Megatron. Also, it looks like Bumblebee is back in action despite the previous Metroplex trailer should Bumblebee being out of commission and being carried on to a transport ship. Strangely absent from the trailer though are the Dinobots and the Combaticons. This may be one of those instances where the less we see of them in advance of the game being released, the more awesome their presence will be once we get to play.

‘Blacklight: Retribution’ Headed for Steam

When most gamers here the phrase “Free-to-play,” heads are usually shaken and faces are definitely palmed. Once in a great while, however, there comes a free-to-play game that is that actually is free to play. Dev. Diary: ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ Shows off New York in Free Roam

After a two game hiatus since Beenox took control of the Spider-Man franchise, the webcrawler is returning to New York City with the tie-in release of The Amazing Spider-Man. It’s what fans of the series have wanted. As much as a linear experience has helped with the storytelling of the previous two Beenox games, it prevented them from capturing the true feel of the best games of the character’s past. Swinging through an epic metropolis at breakneck speeds is what being Spider-Man is all about.

In the developer diary after the jump, The Amazing-Spider-Man’s executive producer Brent Nicholas walks us through some gameplay footage that shows just how exciting Beenox’s take on swinging through the city is. One thing they point out is how the camera draws in closer to Spidey during his swings and drops as a way to show how fast the player is falling. Hopefully this won’t affect the ease of swinging through because of the limited view.

This trailer also gives more perspective on the Web Rush.  Using the web rush ability, players are able to more accurately travel through NYC by deciding where their lines will actually be shot instead of just depending on the game to choose for them.

‘Epic Mickey’ Producer Warren Spector Says Ultra Violence in Video Games Needs to Stop

It’s an argument that has plagued gaming since the first time a player was able to pull out a weapon and attack someone else. No one ever worried about Mario jumping on the heads of turtles or Donkey Kong kidnapping a woman and defending himself with barrels. But by the time characters began looking like real people and players had the ability to whip out a gun and shoot Nazis in Wolfenstein or possessed marines in Doom, violence in video games has be criticized by those outside the industry. Now, the argument against it comes from within by an incredibly respected member of the community.

Warren Spector was recently quoted saying, “The ultraviolence has to stop.” This doesn’t come as a huge surprise that he would be an opponent of violence in gaming as Spector left Eidos in the mid-2000’s because of the level of violence he saw in certain games being created by his studio.

Spector continued, “We have to stop loving it…I just don’t believe in the effects argument at all, but I do believe that we are fetishizing violence, and now in some cases actually combining it with an adolescent approach to sexuality. I just think it’s in bad taste. Ultimately, I think it will cause us trouble.”

The ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ Reboot Gets Halted and Delayed

I have been vocal in opposition to the intensely wrong-headed internet overreaction to the Michael Bay produced Ninja Turtles reboot. A single misinterpreted statement and geek level distrust of Bay led to a firestorm of misinformation and backlash.

Unfortunately we will never get a definitive answer to who was right in that debate as Paramount has shut down this particular reboot and pushed it’s release date:

The effects-heavy film, which was in pre-production in Vancouver, was set for release in December 2013. That date is being pushed to May 2014, according to sources…The issue is said to be the script… Now it has halted work on its planned holiday movie for 2013, temporarily laying off pre-production staff and informing those prepping the film that the work stoppage is “indefinite,”

I really think we are missing out on what could have been a fun take on the characters. That said, anytime a movie like this is pushed in pre-production to work on the script is a good sign. It would have been very easy for them to rush production and fix the script as they go along, which rarely works for these types of films.

In the interim Ninja Turtle fans have a new TV series to look forward to that will have to keep you satisfied until the movie gears back up. Keep your eyes peeled to The Flickcast for more updates on this project in the coming weeks.

The Casting Carousel of ‘Django Unchained’ Comes Full Circle

Like any good Tarantino script, a very large number of quality actors wanted to be apart of it. This leads to lots of people expressing public interest in taking roles only to have to bow out  when schedules do not align. As was the case early on in production when Jonah Hill reportedly was cast in the film.

Well things have finally come full circle as Deadline reports that Hill has indeed joined the cast after all:

The Weinstein Company has set Jonah Hill to play a role in Django Unchained, which is in production. I’m trying to find out who he’ll be playing, but am told it won’t be Scotty Harmony, the kid who loses Django’s slave wife Broomhilda to Calvin Candie… Hill was eyed for the role early on, but had to turn it down because his schedule was so busy. He’s back in another role.

Good for Hill and good for the movie to add another seasoned actor in what might be a bot part. Often times you hear people knock a film for ‘wasting’ a skilled actor in a smaller role. I actually take the opposing stance, the better the actor you can get for any role only enhances the movie.

Django Unchained hits cinemas on Christmas Day.

Brand New ‘Expendables 2’ Poster Is An Action Fan’s Dream

Action Stars? Check. Explosions? Check. More Action Stars? Check. Foreground Flames for no reason? Check. Still more Action Stars? Check, check, check.

Yep, the new Expendables 2 poster hits on just about every note you could possibly expect in an action movie poster. It exudes masculine, muscle-bound machismo more so than any poster for an actual feature film I can recall. Which is exactly the right tone they should be setting in their marketing.

Looking at this poster reminds me of a thought that crossed my mind while watching The Avengers. Projects like these ought not to exist, when we were growing up the concept of an all out action franchise staring just about every icon of the genre was a pipe dream. Now it is a reality.

People still want to worry about the rating, but with the way the MPAA has softened their stance on violence in the last decade I am sure the ‘spolsions and shootin’ wont be too neutered. It is also key to remember Stallone shot the first Expendables to be PG-13 as well, most of the R-rated content was the result of re-shoots.

Take a look at the full poster after the jump, and be prepared to be blown away by pure awesomeness August 17th.
