Nintendo Kicks of 2014 with ‘Super Smash Bros.’ and ‘Mario Kart 8’ News

unnamed

Though they haven’t given us the release date yet, the big day keeps looming closer for Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U. It may end up being what makes me care about my Wii U once again but like I said, the release date wasn’t announced. What was announced though was the addition to the Super Smash Bros. roster of Little Mac.

This is one for the nostalgia freaks out there as Little Mac was the main character in the classic Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! (or as Nintendo now just calls it Punch-Out!! after all of the… unpleasentness). Kids today don’t understand the torturous boss battles we had to endure back in the day with pattern memorization and Punch-Out!! was the king of memorized sequences.

Another big hitter was focused on yesterday at the first Nintendo Direct of 2014 was Mario Kart 8. Rather than worry about silly gimmicks like two person go karts, Nintendo has stuck to their roots with the successful franchise and is expanding its roster.

In possibly the biggest single day roster expansion announcement ever since the franchise’s beginning, Mario Kart 8 adds seven new playable characters with the Koopalings. Iggy, Larry, Lemmy, Ludwig, Morton, Roy and Wendy will not only be playable in Mario Kart 8 but it will be the first time the lot of them has ever been playable on any game on any platform.

Check Out a Preview of Dark Horse’s ‘The Witcher’

Witcher1-crop

Continuing the trend of bringing licensed characters and other IP to the pages of comics, Dark Horse is this time going for something from the gaming world and adapting a title for comics.

The title in question is The Witcher, the best-selling game from the gang at CD Projekt. In case you’re not familiar, The Witcher is an action role-playing hack and slash where you travel the world doing what you do best, hacking and slashing.

Of course, we know it’s a bit more complicated than that. But still, based on the preview art for this comic, it pretty much follows along the same lines. And we don’t think that’s a bad thing at all.

Look for The Witcher #1 to hit stores on March 19. Check out the preview pages after the break.

‘Star Wars: The Clone Wars’ Coming to Netflix

Star-Wars-Clone-Wars-Season-6

Much as it did with The Killing and Arrested Development, Netflix has decided to give a cancelled series a new lease on life. Well, for at least one more season anyway. That series? Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

That’s right, the streaming service will unleash a 13-episode sixth season of the animated series next month. The season will be called Titled The Lost Missions which promises to reveal “some of the deepest mysteries of the conflict between the light and the dark sides of the Force leading to a series finale.”

“An intrepid clone trooper discovers a shocking secret, Anakin Skywalker’s closest relationship is tested to its limits, and what Master Yoda discovers while investigating the disappearance of a Jedi could forever change the balance of power in the galaxy.”

Sounds good, right? We really hope this is a success because then it could open up other opportunities for canceled series that didn’t get a proper send off.

Firefly anyone? Let’s make it happen Netflix.

Look for Star Wars: The Clone Wars to debut in March 7.

TV RECAP: ‘The Walking Dead’ Episode 409 : ‘After’

Walking Dead 409 Pic

One (and maybe the only) complaint I hear a lot about The Walking Dead is that it’s too boring and nothing ever happens. For the most part, I disagree with those assessments. Not this time though. This was a whole hour of nothing.

I was very tempted to just write a two or three sentence recap and just leave it at that, but I doubt that would drive readership. I’ll throw it in at the end for fun. The episode starts by showing the aftermath of the war between The Governor’s team and Rick’s. Basically only zombies remain, and the jail is on fire.

Michonne emerges from the woods and kills some zombies, before she turns two into slaves, much the same as she had when we first met her. She also finds Herschel’s decapitated head, which has turned. She stabs it, and is visibly upset.

She finds some footprints in the mud, but does not follow them. She chooses to go back into the woods. A flashback (as I thought, though it turned out to be a dream) is shown of Michonne in happier times. She is a sophisticated, wine drinking, museum going woman. She has a lover and a son. Slowly her dream changes, and her lover becomes a zombie, and her son disappears. Michonne awakes suddenly in the car she had fallen asleep in.

Back on the move, Michonne has integrated herself in a group of walker, using her zombie slaves as camouflage. She keeps looking at one (maybe a few) of the walkers as though she may know them. Michonne snaps and kills the walker she may have known, and ends up killing every walker around her, including her slaves. She goes back to the main road, and decides to now follow the footprints she ignored the first time.
