The Flickcast – Page 644 of 1030 – Stuff Nerds Love

‘The Expendables’ Goes Viral And Blows Up YouTube

Now that Inception is far behind us, there’s one more film slated for release this year that we can’t wait to see. Of course, that film is Stallone’s action masterpiece The Expendables. The cast alone is enough to bring in most passerby’s, but we fans of the film genre only need to hear the names Arnold, Bruce, and Sly in order to pre-order our tickets.

The casting alone is proof that Stallone is making this film for fans of the genre, and anyone else caught in the crossfire is OK, too. With that in mind, Lionsgate has done a neat new viral ad to promote the film on YouTube. Unlike the last viral web spot we’ve seen for the film, which called for us to prove our manhood by buying a ticket, this one is official and actually sanctioned by Lionsgate. Still, they’re both pretty awesome.

Be sure to check out the full video over at YouTube, and make sure you’ve got about 2 minutes to kill, because there’s no pausing allowed. With this kind of ad possible over at Youtube, you can expect to see plenty of studios taking the chance and trying out viral marketing for the first time.

Expendables is set to hit theaters on August 13th, and stars Sly, Bruce Willis, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Terry Crews, Randy Couture, Steve Austin, Mickey Rourke, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Dolph Lundgren.

Get Your First Look at Fraction, Ferry and Hollingsworth’s New ‘Thor’

One of the cool things about having a website devoted to geek favorites like movies, TV shows and comics is that we get to see new comics before they hit store shelves. This is especially cool when the new comic in question is written by one of our favorite writers.

Case in point is Marvel’s upcoming arc for Thor where Matt Fraction takes the reigns. Along with creative team members Pasqual Ferry and Matt Hollignsworth and beginning with issue number 615, we will be treated to “the dawn of a new age as Asgard is restored to its former glory and retakes its place as the Golden Realm.”

Of course, not all is well and “an ominous threat from another dimension has its sights set on Earth.” What do do? Well, as you may have already guessed, it’s “up to Thor and his godly brethren to defend the Marvel Universe from this dark, destructive force.” According to our friends at Marvel, this comic will also be a great way for new readers to get into the Thor character just in time for the big movie release.

Check out preview pages for the new comic after the jump. Thor #615 hits shelves on September 22.

Game Review: ‘Transformers: War for Cybertron’ Character and Map Pack DLC

Transformers: War for Cybertron has been one of the favorite licensed games in recent memory for us. Especially after seeing what Michael Bay did to the film franchise, it was great to see people who had a true appreciation for the source material get their hands on it and get to play around with the world.

At Comic-Con, we spoke to the game’s director Matt Tieger and he walked us through the now recently released DLC content that was announced at the Con. Make sure to check out the full interview with Tieger for more of his insight into the game.

The first thing you notice when playing the new content is the great variety of additional character models and loadouts for the game’s Multiplayer and Escalation mode. Classic favorites like Jazz, Demolisher and Shockwave make their return to the Transformers universe that were previously only available as pre-order bonuses while never before seen Scattershot and Onslaught make their way to Cybertron.

As expected from the high values of this production team, all the models look beautiful and do a great job of separating themselves from the others already on the battlefield. It is easy to spot these new characters in online play, especially the uniquely shaped head of Shockwave. These new models do a great job of preventing games that feel like the final fight in Transformers 2: Rise of the Fallen where Michael Bay’s horde of clone-like Decepticons cannot be told apart during the chaos.

Nicholas Cage Pulls Out Of Schumacher’s ‘Trespass’

Just two weeks  before filming was to begin,  Nicholas Cage has pulled out of Joel Schumacher’s Trespass. According to reports, Cage is on vacation and will stay in the Bahamas.

Rather than waiting for the star, the studio plans to keep the film on schedule and will move forward without Cage. The studio is currently scrambling for a replacement. The rumored forerunner for the role is Liev Schreiber.

In the film, Cage was set to play opposite Nicole Kidman as a husband who is kidnapped with his wife by a group of thugs looking for ransom. The problems began when Cage decided that he rather play one of the kidnappers instead of the lead male role.

One thing is for sure, Cage isn’t known for pulling out of projects or turning down roles. Even with a recent streak of wins such as Knowing and Kick-Ass, Cage has taken on some horrible roles in films like The Wicker Man, Next, Ghost Rider, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, Astro Boy, Bangkok Dangerous and the upcoming Season of the Witch.

How bad could a role be that the man who was the “star” of The Wicker Man remake decided to drop out? Could it be that Schumacher is past his prime and is making a film that even Cage knows is horrible? Or is it another bad move by Cage who may end up regretting it? Only time will tell.

Android Sales Beating iPhone in 2010, Nielson Says

Look out, iPhone enthusiasts. Your phone of choice might not be top dog for much longer. According to a report released Monday by the Nielson Co., Google’s Android devices outsold Apple’s iPhone for the first half of 2010.

With 13% of the market share, Android is still behind both Apple (28% of the market share) and RIM, maker of the BlackBerry (35% of the market share). However, 27% of consumers who bought a smartphone in the beginning of 2010 chose an Android phone, compared to the 23% who bought an iPhone.

While Android and Apple’s sales soared this year, RIM, Palm OS, and Windows Mobile all experienced drops in sales. Apple did show more loyalty in its customers,89% of which want an iPhone for their next smartphone. 71% of Android users said they would stick with this operating system in their next device, which isn’t too far behind Apple.

RIM, however, had a disappointing 42% of customers who would return to the Blackberry in their next device, with 29% of their customers who want an iPhone next and 21% who’d like an Android device.

Jailbreak Apple’s iPhone 4 and iPad Using Only Your Browser

Jailbreaking the latest Apple devices just became a whole lot easier. Fire up your iOS4 device, point Safari at the web site www.JailBreakMe.com, slide the big button on the main page and you’re done. Considerably easier than some of the arcane methods device owners had to engage in previously to free their devices from Apple’s short leash. The web-based tool works for iPhones, including the latest iPhone 4, as well as other devices like the iPod and iPad running iOS 3.2.1.

In case you’re not familiar with jailbreaking, it’s act of unlocking your device’s file system so that you can install any app you’d like, even those outside the purview of the official app store. This cloud-based jailbreaking method comes hot on the heels of a decision by the U.S. Library of Congress which declared the act of jailbreaking to be legal. Good timing for the hacker who created the code, since Apple can no longer have the site taken down.

So how does the hack work? According to Wired’s Gadget Lab, The hack works through a PDF exploit in Mobile Safari. Comex, a member of the iPhone Dev Team (the jailbreaking people), uses Safari’s PDF decoder to run the code. Because Safari automatically opens PDFs, the jailbreak code is run. Expect Apple to close this hole in an update, if only for security purposes.

Perhaps the more important question is why would you want to jailbreak your Apple device? Most who do so, cite gaining access to sites like Cydia, the unofficial app store where you can download apps not approved for sale by Apple. Some of the ‘rogue’ apps available at these sites include MyWi, which turns phones into mobile Wi-Fi hotspots, and IntelliScreen, which lets users put e-mail and calendars on their home screens.
