Check Out Some Photos From Anime Expo

Even though we didn’t get a chance to attend Anime Expo this past week it doesn’t mean we can’t bring you some info on the event. Taking place from July 2-4 at the Los Angeles Convention Center, the expo showcases the latest, greatest and most colorful Anime from around the world.

Of course, where there’s Anime you will find people who love to dress up as their favorite Anime characters. Our friends at LAist have put together a rather impressive bunch of photos that show you exactly what we’re talking about.

We can show you a couple of them here but for all the rest, be sure to head over to the site and their photo pool on Flickr to check them out. After looking at these photos and hearing some of the stories it looks like we ma have to add this event to our calendar for next year. Seems like it was a good time.

Check out a few more photos after the jump.

War Movie Mondays: ‘M*A*S*H’

This week’s pick is the 1970 comedy classic M*A*S*H, from acclaimed director Robert Altman. M*A*S*H (Mobile Army Surgical Hospital) was adapted by screen writer Ring Lardner, Jr. and based on the hit novel from Richard Hooker about three military surgeons who are stationed three miles from the front lines during the Korean War. The film stars Donald Sutherland (Capt. Benjamin Franklin “Hawkeye” Pierce), Elliott Gould (Capt. John Francis Xavier “Trapper John” McIntyre), and Tom Skerritt (Capt. Augustus Bedford “Duke” Forrest).

Rounding out the supporting cast is Robert Duvall (Maj. Frank Burns), Sally Kellerman (Maj. Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan), Roger Bowen (Lt. Col. Henry Blake), Rene Auberjonois (Father John Patrick “Dago Red” Mulcahy), and Gary Burghoff as (Cpl. Walter “Radar” O’Reilly) who would later reprise his role in the hit television series which ran from 1972-83.

The release of M*A*S*H came at a very critical time when America was entering a new decade and the war in Vietnam was still raging on. M*A*S*H‘s dark humor and side-splitting dialogue is an allegorical look at Korea, yet reflected the country’s attitudes about Vietnam which was igniting riots in cities and on college campuses throughout the country. The three characters of Hawkeye, Trapper, and Duke are rebellious, womanizing, rule breakers who are conscripted into the army, yet quickly prove to their commanding officer Col. Blake that they’re the best surgeons in the whole U.S. Army.

Box Office: ‘Eclipse’ Leads an Explosive Weekend

*Note: this column was written on Sunday, so four-day totals that include Monday’s receipts will differ from these numbers.

It was no surprise that The Twilight Saga: Eclipse dominated the weekend box office. The film made $69 Million over the weekend.  Add in a record breaking $30M midnight take on Tuesday night,  and Wednesday and Thursday’s totals, and the movie has made $161 Million as of today.

It did fall short of breaking the all-time opening day record set by its  predecessor New Moon, which made $72 Million on its opening day. Eclipse came awfully close, making about $68.5 in the same time frame.  At any rate, Eclipse recouped its budget of $69 Million in one day.

We can expect the film to drop off quite a bit in upcoming weeks, as the series historically has been very front loaded, but this film does seem to be getting good word of mouth, so the drop off might not be as steep.

The Last Airbender did a lot better than I expected it to.  Obviously the built in fan base helped elevate the critically reviled film to an okay opening weekend.  Airbender made $40 Million over the weekend, but since it opened on Thursday, its total is now $56 Million.

That’s still a long way from its $150 Million budget, though, and word of mouth has been brutal, so the movie may fall off considerably after this weekend.  If so, it will be a disaster for Paramount, which has sunk about $280M into the film between the budget and marketing.  It also leaves the future of the franchise, and the career of director M. Night Shyamalan hanging in the balance.

Toy Story 3 is still going strong in its third week in release, making another $30 Million.  This brings its total to $289 Million.  Finding Nemo is Pixar’s highest grossing movie of all time, with $339 Million in ticket sales. It is looking highly likely that Toy Story 3 will exceed that during its theatrical run.

New Trailer for ‘Eat, Pray, Love’ Arrives

Normally, when a new trailer for a film comes out we try to give you some context for it and explain a little about what’s going on in it and with the film. We also tend to go on a little about the actors in a particular film or how much we like the director or his/her previous films.

On occasion, we also try to piece together the film’s story from images or scenes in a trailer — which isn’t always easy. Although, with trailer these days it often is. They tend to give away too much. Take the new trailer for Eat, Pray, Love for instance.

In it, Julia Roberts travels from place to place eating, loving and occasionally praying. Well, I might have made up that last one. She definitely eats and loves. . . a lot.

Anyway, check out the new trailer for the film after the jump. Eat, Pray, Love is based on the novel of the same name and also features James Franco, Billy Crudup and Javier Bardem. It hits theaters later this year.

‘UFC: Undisputed 2010’ Trailer – ‘The Biggest Fight In UFC History’

Tonight, UFC is having what it is calling the biggest fight in the history of the company. Their 4-1 Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesner takes on the interim champion, the undefeated Shane Carwin at UFC 116. Almost a year since Brock Became champion by defeating Frank Mir, Brock will put his title on the line for the first time against the one man people think have a chance at defeating this behemoth.

In celebration of tonight’s match, THQ has put together a special trailer for UFC: Undisputed 2010 to help promote the fight. Not that it needs the extra promotion though. Anyone who is a fan of MMA is geared up for the match between these two heavyweights.

Upon definitely beating Frank Mir with a TKO in the second round at UFC 100, Brock addressed the crowd in less than sportsmanlike fashion when he flipped off the crowd before cutting an even more unsportsmanlike promo. Since, he has been one of UFC’s fiercest and also most hated competitors. Shane Carwin went on to defeat Frank Mir months later to earn the interim championship and is now set to face Brock to see who is UFC’s true undisputed heavyweight champion.

Take a peek after the jump at the special trailer and keep it right here for all your UFC: Undisputed 2010 news.
