Comikaze 2013: Stan Lee Introduces ‘Superhero Ball Wars’

Ball Wars

At Comikaze 2013 Stan “The Man” Lee was on hand to announce on of his newest ventures: Stan Lee’s Superhero Ball Wars. The series of apps, set to release starting in 2014, will be available first for iPhone and iPad and later for Android devices.

The game centers on the characters from the planet Ballo whose citizens are, as Lee says, “well-rounded.” But the Inflators are the superheroes of planet and they are the ones who must fight off an invasion by the evil Deflators. Earthlings are called to help in the battle by collecting heroes and deflecting villains.

The augmented reality aspect of Superhero Ball Wars allows you to hold up your device while the app is running and actually locate Ballo in the sky. You can also lock the game to play without moving your phone or tablet around above you. Once you have Ballo in your sights, characters and objects start flying towards you. Each of the 15 missions requires you to collect a specific character, including Professor Ballkenstan (Lee in Ballo form), while deflecting or avoid other objects and characters.

TV RECAP: ‘Dracula’ Episode 102: ‘A Whiff of Sulfur’

Dracula - Season 1

A flashback is shown in 1881 Romania of Van Helsing waking up Dracula. He has to convince Dracula to work with him to eliminate the Order of the Dragon. They killed both of their families, and he has the means to fight them. This is basically a five-minute version of the one line they told us last week. So we already knew this, but got a recap video anyway.

Van Helsing is drawing some blood from Grayson. Grayson tells him that the Order knows there is a vampire in town, all because Grayson killed Clive, and the huntsman. Van Helsing is working on a drug for Grayson that will allow him to go out during the day.

Lucy offers her colors to a man in a fencing competition. He promptly loses to Lord Davenport’s son. I get the feeling that Lucy is trying to break up Harker and Mina, but I can’t figure out exactly why. She has an evil feeling about her. And she keeps doing things to remind us that he’s poor.

Lady Wetherby wants to hunt the vampire herself. Even though she says this, she tries to hire to coked out looking people to find him. They have some sort of visionary powers, but Grayson can sense they are watching him, and thwarts them.

Check Out the First Trailer for Ron Moore’s ‘Helix’

helix-first-look-1

If you know anything about The Flickcast team, you know we’re huge fans of the reimagined Battlestar Galactica. It was an excellent show and we are grateful that Syfy decided to run it for as long as they did.

We are also fans of BSG creator and Exec. Producer Ron Moore, so when he’s about to launch a new show, we take notice. That new show is called Helix and from the what we can see in this brand new trailer, it looks like it could become one of our new favorites.

Here’s more about the show, directly from Syfy:

Helix is an intense thriller about a team of scientists from the Centers for Disease Control, led by Dr. Alan Farragut (Billy Campbell), who travel to a high-tech research facility in the Arctic to investigate a possible disease outbreak, only to find themselves pulled into a terrifying life-and-death struggle that holds the key to mankind’s salvation…or total annihilation.

Check out the brand new trailer after the break. Helix premieres Friday, January 10 at 10/9c, on Syfy.

TV RECAP: ‘Once Upon a Time’ Ep. 306: ‘Ariel’

JOANNA GARCIA SWISHER

I have to tell you Oncers, I’m starting to worry about our magical show. We spend yet another episode in Neverland and seem to get very little accomplished once again toward the goal of rescuing Henry (who doesn’t even appear in “Ariel” though that might be an improvement really). We do however get confirmation yet again that Regina is the best character (and actress) on Once and that Rumple hasn’t completely lost his ability to put together a deal or a plan. Oh and of course, there’s Ariel, whose flashback story is really somewhat pointless until the plot at then end calls for her.

So we start in the old Enchanted Forest where Snow White is running away from Regina’s guards.  She skids to a halt at a cliff overlooking the ocean but then takes a daring leap into the waters where she is recued by a red-headed mermaid, Ariel.

In Neverland, Regina is pushing Emma to concentrate to use her magic. Ms. Savior doesn’t want to use her anger as a trigger, which makes sense since she was about to use love every other time but she apparently doesn’t remember that. See, Rumple, this is why they need you. The Queen is disgusted with Emma’s reluctance, saying, “You’re such a pathetic waste of ability.” This fires up Emma’s temper and the campfire she was trying to magic.

Regina is pleased while Emma’s parents are trying not to be too mortified. They get a nice bit of distraction from Hook who, in a show of surprising honesty, tells them about Neal. While the men agree that not telling Emma until they’re sure about Neal’s alive or dead state, Snow feels uncomfortable lying to her daughter. Personally, I think she should embrace this opportunity to make up for missed chances to lie to her kid about things like Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny.

TV RECAP: ‘American Horror Story: Coven’ Episode 304: ‘Fearful Pranks Ensue’

AHS 304 Pic

In 1961 New Orleans, a black boy is chased down by some angry white local men and hung in the woods. His mother works in Marie Laveau’s hair salon. As revenge, Laveau casts a spell, reanimating the dead, and releasing them on the murderers.

Spalding is shown having a creepy tea party in his room with a bunch of dolls when he hears some screaming. This is when he comes upon Fiona killing Madison. Fiona tells him it is her duty to stay vital, and that Spalding seems so much more wise without his tongue.

Fiona hears a crash and rushes outside to find Queenie bleeding and near death. The minotaur (I’ve been incorrectly calling him a mantaur – sorry folks, too much wrestling as kid) is still in the greenhouse. We’ll find out later that Fiona beheaded the minotaur, and sends the head to Marie Laveau.

Fiona wakes up Cordelia so they can help Queenie. They are too busy arguing about Marie Laveau, and Queenie passes out. Fiona breathes some breath into her, and Queenie regains consciousness. Fiona won’t let Cordelia call 911, telling her she needs to handle everything internally. They wouldn’t want a visit from The Council.

Zoe is still at Kyle’s house, trying to figure out what to do with him. She feels terrible about what he’s become. She makes him some food, and most likely laced it with rat poison. But when she comes back, Kyle is gone. On Halloween.

TV RECAP: ‘Grimm’ Episode 302: ‘PTZD’

Grimm - Season 3

Nick is running crazily through the woods as Monroe and Hank are trying to track him. He sees a family coming home and chases after them. He breaks into the house and corners the father of the family. Hank and Monroe get there just in time to lure Nick out of the house.

Nick chases them into a barn, and they are able to trap him inside. Captain Renard, Rosalee, and Juliette arrive as the father shows up with a gun. They manage to get the man back into his house, and head into the barn to help Nick. Captain Renard and Monroe woge, and eventually Rosalee is able to inject Nick with the antidote. They take Nick away before the cops arrive.

When they get Nick back to the spice shop, they give him a second dose of the antidote. Nick is flailing around, so they handcuff him to the bed. Nick eventually wakes up, but does remember anything after fighting the Baron in the shipyard.

Captain Renard receives a text from his informant saying that the job has been done. Renard checks the news online to see that his brother was killed in a car explosion in Vienna. Renard’s informant is on a train headed on vacation as instructed. Something tells me Eric is not really dead, but I guess time will tell.

‘Call of Duty: Ghosts’ Comes Out Tomorrow – Need We Say More?

1379411_554896547920424_668249265_n

See what we did there? Okay. We didn’t do it. I found it on a meme Facebook page but at least I made the effort to post it. Considering in about twenty four hours I am going to disappear for a week after Activision shoots Call of Duty: Ghosts my way and I “mysteriously” am not found in the office from an “unknown illness”.

In all seriousness, I won’t be able to wait until the XBox One comes out later this month for the next gen version of Call of Duty: Ghosts. This is an instant gratification nation and I want the game inspired by one of the best supporting characters never seen on my screen now.

And what would a Call of Duty launch be without a live action trailer. We’ve had the Replacers. We’ve had FPS Russia and Robert Downey Jr. This time, we get Megan Fox… You know what? I’ll take it.

Anything to keep her away from the Transformers franchise because at the end of the day, she isn’t going to be IN Call of Duty: Ghosts. Below you’ll check out the full live action trailer from director James Mangold on a trip with four buddies in Vegas that is way more epic than the Hangover.

Movie Review: ‘Ender’s Game’

enders

Before seeing the film, I had a study group session, and one of my buddies in our group mentioned that he had read several of the book’s in Orson Scott Card’s Ender’s Game series. He said the theme was empathy, and, outside of that and the hubbub surrounding Card’s controversial comments on same-sex marriage, was about the only thing I knew going into the film.

And now, having seen it, I can see bits of that theme peeking through, but ultimately director Gavin Hood (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) appears to have traded depth for spectacle.

In the semi-distant future, following an attack by an alien species known as the Formics, the countries of Earth have placed their best and brightest in the International Fleet academy, a military training ground that’s preparing for the next potential invasion.  A. E. Wiggin (Asa Butterfield) a precocious youngster with a talent for strategy, is put through a series of tests administered by Colonel Graff (Harrison Ford), a tough commander who nonetheless sees Ender as the one to ultimately lead the fleet to victory. Overcoming loneliness and antagonism from his peers, Ender continually proves himself through a gauntlet of war games, all throughout questioning the true intentions of his leaders.

Entertainment wise, Ender’s Game delivers. The various war games provide a fun parade of sequences for Hood to show how Ender outsmarts nigh-impossible odds (though, for all his apparent brilliance, Ender’s solutions do seem to rack up the casualties), particularly with one scene involving a weightless battle sphere. The cadets compete against each other to make it through the other team’s gate without getting shot by the opposing players’ tag-guns.
