The Flickcast – Episode 224: The Winter Soldier

Captain_America_Winter_Soldier-1

Chris and Joe are back once again this week with a brand new episode of The Flickcast. That’s right, three in a row! Amazing again, right? Speaking of amazing, this week’s episode (as they often do) includes lots of amazing topics covering all things geek.

Some of these include the new, awesome trailer for Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the next Avengers movie, Thor: The Dark World, Marvel movies in general, Lawrence Kasdan joining the new Star Wars writing team, The Walking Dead and a whole lot more. Plus, the boys again talk about their appreciation for Idris Elba, how The Empire Strikes Back is the best Star Wars movie and Chris says something nice about George Lucas. Yeah, we don’t believe it either.

Picks this week include Joe’s pick of the ongoing comic book series Iron Man, which delves into the origins of Tony Stark, and Chris’ pick of Apple’s new free OS called Mavericks. That’s right, free — as in free beer.

‘Grimm’ Returns and ‘Dracula’ Premieres Tonight, So Here’s Some Previews

grimm-season3-1

It’s Friday and you know what that means? Yeah, it means the weekend starts tonight. But this Friday it also means the return of one of our favorite shows, Grimm, and the premiere of another show that could be interesting if done right: Dracula.

And yes, to commemorate the return of Grimm, we’ve got some previews for tonight’s episode and the upcoming season. We’ve also got previews of Dracula, which features that English bloke Jonathan Rhys Meyers. We liked him in The Tudors. You may have seen that. If not, no worries, just watch him in Dracula instead.

Anyway, the fun starts tonight at 9/8C with Grimm followed by Dracula at 10/9C. Both shows are on NBC.

Check out the previews, and more, after the break.

TV RECAP: ‘Arrow’ Episode 203: ‘Broken Dolls’

arrow-season-2-2

Arrow is cornered by a SWAT team in Laurel’s office with no means of escape. A lady vigilante swoops in and saves Arrow. She has blond hair. Could it be Felicity?

Barton Mathis, a serial killer that Quentin put away, has escaped from prison following the earthquake. He is known as the Dollmaker, as his M.O. is pouring polymer down his victim’s throat, giving her the appearance of a doll. Quentin is told by order of the Lieutenant not to pursue this case, or he will be arrested.

While Arrow helps Quentin investigate the resurgence in Dollmaker murders, Arrow sends Roy to look into the new lady vigilante. Quentin and Arrow trace down the hotel room that Mathis is staying at, but then they get there the room is empty. A phone rings, and the Dollmaker forces Quentin to listen on the phone while he kills a girl.

The only lead Arrow and Felicity can come up with is that the new victim and one of the old victims use the same brand of skin cream. They determine that the Dollmaker is targeting women who shop at a particular boutique. Only four shops carry this particular skin cream, so Felicity volunteers to go to them all in hopes of drawing out the Dollmaker. During the stakeout, Quentin confides in Arrow that every girl he couldn’t save on the Dollmaker’s first killing spree reminded him of Sarah.

Movie Review: ‘Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa’

Jackass-Presents-Bad-Grandpa-poster

It’s been some time since I did a full on review here. It’s been even longer since it has been a movie review. But since I think I am the first on The Flickcast staff to check it out, it only felt write to post my thoughts on Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa. The other night I got to check out the advances screening of the latest work from Johnny Knoxville and the Jackass team.

But instead of being just a hidden camera prank movie, Johnny and the team put together a narrative that ties all of their stunts and pranks together. This story features Johnny in the role of Irving, an elderly gentleman who just lost his wife who is charged with driving his grandson Billy cross country to his deadbeat dad. As expected, “Hilarity ensues”. (Keeping this review spoiler free, especially since a lot of the pranks are in the commercial)

During Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa, there is a mix of improv scenes between Irving and Billy to help develop their relationship and try to put some heart in the movie, though many times they fall flat. My Whiskey and Waffles counterpart put it the best as he described two different Johnny Knoxvilles. There is an actor Johnny Knoxville and the prankster Johnny Knoxville.

While the same person, the outward appearance of their actions stand out against each other. The issue doesn’t come from either of these not being believable or enjoyable but when they are presented with each other in the same project, they just don’t mesh well. Unlike Borat which gave a full one hundred percent commitment to the bit, Bad Grandpa just isn’t as believable and comes across as more of a hidden camera feel rather than the faux documentary.

A street corner magician displays his power of creating fire, when a woman (Raina) catches his eye. He invites her back to his place, where two men appear in HAZMAT suits and kidnap him.

The man is named Chan Ho Yin, and is on a S.H.I.E.L.D. watch list due to his moderate pyrokinetic abilities. In researching how Yin was discovered, it appears that a leak from Rising Tide made it’s way into the wrong hands.

The whole gang is back for the sequel to Anchorman and we couldn’t be happier about it. The first Anchorman is one of our favorite comedies, mostly thanks to the very talented ensemble cast who really go above and beyond to bring the funny.

With Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, we’re back with Ron Burgandy and the gang as they need to get back together to help save their favorite TV station. Plus, Brick has a girlfriend, played by Kristin Wig. Awesome.

TV RECAP: ‘Once Upon a Time’ – Ep. 304: ‘Nasty Habits’

DYLAN SCHMID, ROBERT CARLYLE

Oh Oncers, we’re back again for some Neverland adventures and general stupidity by all adults present.

We start with the recently captured Bae being led through the forest by Felix. “You were a Lost Boy,” Felix says. Bae isn’t interested in reminiscing so Felix continues. “You may have grown up Baelfire but it appears you have grown up stupid.” Seriously, right? Bae proves us all wrong (for once) by slipping out of his hand ties and knocking out Felix.

Flashback to Papa Dark One and baby Bae who is definitely looking like teenage Bae. Daddy gives his son a nice little knife but Bae doesn’t want anything that his dad took from someone else as payment. He wants to leave their little house and play with some friends. Rumple counters that he could build them a castle but Bae doesn’t want that either. At a loss, Rumple says he’s just concerned that his enemies will hurt Bae if the boy leaves.

“I don’t know what I’d do if I ever lost you,” he says. Go a little crazy and use your magic to weave an elaborate plan to get him back probably.

TV RECAP: ‘The Walking Dead’ – Episode 402: ‘Infected’

Walking Dead 402 Pic

Hey folks, I’m back after a couple of week layoff. I had some family stuff to attend to, and was unable to do any recaps. But I’m back now, and ready to go!

A flashlight is shown shining on the walkers outside of the prison. A rat is fed to them, but the person feeding them is never shown. I immediately thought of The Governor, but perhaps someone on the inside is doing his bidding.

Tyrese and Karen part ways for the evening, as they stay in different cellblocks. Karen stops off in the bathroom, and thinks she hears a noise. As we all wait for the zombified Patrick to attack, she sees nothing and leaves. Patrick emerges after she leaves.

Patrick enters the cellblock and almost goes into Karen’s cell, but hears another man cough and goes to him. Patrick enters the man’s cell, and kills and eats him. Patrick hears another person coughing, and goes to them. We see the man he just killed wake up, now a zombie.

Rick is teaching Carl about the importance of their farming duties, when the alarm sounds. People have found the walkers in the cellblocks. Carl is heading to the watchtower, when he sees Michonne trying to get back into the prison grounds. He lets her in, but several walkers follow her.
