The Flickcast – Episode 220: Not So Fast (Or Furious)

Vin-Diesel-TF

This week on The Flickcast, Chris and Joe are once again talking all things geek. That, of course, means movies, TV, comics and even a little tech thrown in, just for fun.

This week’s episode includes a whole bunch of geekly topics that we don’t feel like telling you about right now. In fact, you’ll just have to listen to see (or, really, hear) all the good stuff.

Trust us, it’s worth it. No, really.

Blizzard to Close ‘Diablo III’ Auction Houses

diablo3screen

In what seems to be a long time coming, Blizzard is finally closing down both of its in-game auction houses in Diablo III. While it isn’t a huge shock that the real world cash house where people could literally pay their way to get a better character is closing, it is a little bit surprising that they are also taking down the in-game gold auction house as well.

While the real cash auction house was essentially power leveling on steroids, the gold auction house should have theoretically worked in line with the game’s economy but it is likely there was some level of either drastic inflation or deflation on value of the game’s currency at hand to make Blizzard come to such a drastic decision.

In an email that went out at the end of day yesterday, Blizzard addressed the closure to Diablo III players:

TV RECAP: ‘Sleepy Hollow’ Episode 101 – ‘Pilot’

Sleepy Hollow 101 Pic

A Revolutionary War battle is going on in Hudson Valley, New York in the late 1700’s. Ichabod Crane is one of the soldiers. He battles a man in a leather mask with a unique tattoo on his hand, and cuts the man’s head off. But not before Crane is wounded in the process.

Crane breaks through the ground and climbs out of what appears to be a makeshift grave. He is inside a cave, and his wound is healed. The top of the cave opens up and Crane climbs out into a park. He ends up on the street, and is fascinated by it. He is almost hit by a truck and a car, with the car swerving off the road. The man gets out of the car, and Crane runs off. We see the sign welcoming us to Sleepy Hollow.

Officer Abbie Mills and Sheriff Corbin are eating in a diner, discussing Mills’ intention to apply at Quantico. He hints that she is trying to run away from something. They are called to a farmer’s house for a report of spooked horses. Abbie goes to check with the owner while Sheriff Corbin heads out to the barn to check on the horses.

The owner isn’t answering the door, and Abbie soon finds him dead near his pickup truck. At the same time, Sheriff Corbin encounters the headless horseman in the barn. The Sheriff shoots the horseman several times, but to no avail. By the time Abbie arrives at the barn, Sheriff Corbin is dead. Abbie sees the headless horseman fleeing into the night on a white horse.

Midnight Releases at 30 Years Old: ‘I’m Too Old For This Sh*t’

gta-cop-meme-02

Originally, I preordered my copy of Grand Theft Auto V thinking I would just head to GameStop after work on Tuesday night. Nothing abnormal, right? But then the other day I got a text reminding me the game was coming in and that I could pick it up at midnight last night as long as I just come by around 10 PM and then pick up the game as the clock struck 12.

And it actually seemed like a good idea at the time. I thought, “Sure, I’ll grab the game and maybe play a few hours before heading to bed and then after work I can head straight home and play more.” And then 9 o’clock rolls around and logic kicks in.

Keep in mind logic is something as a gamer I use more often in game than in real life. I start thinking about the fact that I won’t be walking out exactly at midnight with the game. I didn’t line up early so they are going to have to process a bunch of people in front of me. After that, it is another fifteen or so minutes before I get home from GameStop.

And then there is probably a day one update I’ll have to download to start playing. And finally when I do get to play, I’ll be up for another two hours only to get like five hours sleep before heading into work.

‘Glee’ Star to Play Barry Allen in ‘Arrow’

The-Flash

After the success of Smallville and the warm reception Arrow has gotten thus far, it isn’t a shock to see the DC Universe expanded in the second season of Arrow. This season, Arrow will add Barry Allen to the cast of characters and though he is referred to as Barry Allen and not the Flash, it looks as though his powers will emerge before the end of the season.

Grant Gustin of Glee fame will be tapped for the 8th, 9th and 20th episode of season two of Arrow. Episode 20 specifically with focus on Barry’s origin story which may be a back door attempt at testing the interest in a Flash spinoff series.

One thing of interest, first pointed out by IGN.com, is a 23 year old being slated as a police forensic investigator. Shy of being someone who skipped a few years of school, getting a Masters in Forensic Science and then being passed around to other cities for investigations probably isn’t the most realistic of situations. Although, the same could be said about someone hit by lightening which allows them to tap into the Speed Force.

The Flickcast – Episode 219: Come With Us If You Want to Live

The-Terminator-Arnold-1

This week on The Flickcast, Chris and Joe are back once again and ready to talk all things geek. That, of course, means movies, TV, comics and even a little tech thrown in, just for fun.

This week’s episode includes discussions about the programming on Netflix, the Breaking Bad spin-off with Bob Odenkirk, AMC’s budget decisions, the deliberate pacing of The Walking Dead and the upcoming Doctor Who TV special.

Also discussed is the recent controversy surrounding a contest to draw the character Harly Quinn in a rather compromising situation, other DC editorial decisions and policies, Michael Biehn and Linda Hamilton rumored to be joining Arnold Schwarzenegger in the next Terminator movie, the observational powers of stunt men, new iPhones and a whole lot more. It’s a big show and one you won’t want to miss.

This weeks picks include Joe’s pick of the movie The Chronicles of Riddick so you can see it before you watch the new one that’s just come out. Chris’ pick this week is the DIY Network TV series Make It Right, featuring Canada’s second most trusted person: contractor Mike Holmes.

Movie Review: ‘Insidious: Chapter 2’

ic21

This is a difficult one. On the one hand, the constant use of jump scares, which last for about two-thirds of the running time, feels like a cheat. The camera closes in on an actor, the music drops, and then, suddenly, WHAM, something appears, screams indecipherably, and a discordant note strikes. Repeat. And repeat, repeat, and repeat. It’s not difficult to do, and director James Wan (Saw) does it so frequently that you start to wonder, fairly early, if he can do anything else.

He doesn’t seem to, since the story is nonexistent for a large part of the beginning, and once Wan finally settles down and tells it, it gets convoluted and downright silly.

What we do get, at least before the spoiler-mark, is a flashback to 1986. Young Josh Lambert (Garrett Ryan) is troubled by spooky visions so his parents call in Elise Ranier (Lin Shaye), a paranormal something-or-other who senses deadly presences and then decides to hypnotize Lambert into forgetting everything. Jump to the present day, where Josh (Patrick Wilson), his wife Renai (Rose Byre), and son Dalton (Ty Simpkins) are recovering from the events of the first film.

Josh starts acting strange, and Renai suspects something’s come back with him (come back from the supernatural place he went in the first film). At the same time, two bumbling ghost chasers, Specs (Leigh Whannell) and Tucker (Angus Sampson), team up with quasi-psychic and former colleague of Elise, Carl (Steve Coulter), and Josh’s mother, Lorraine (Barbara Hershey) to contact the spirit of (Spoiler for the first film) Elise.

‘Jurassic Park 4’ Will Be Called ‘Jurassic World’ and Come Out in 2015

jurassic-world

That’s right. The franchise that just keeps coming back whether it is through sequels or 3D rereleases, Jurassic Park has been something we haven’t been able to get away from since we saw Martin Ferrero get eaten off of a toilet by a TRex. Twenty two years following the release of the original film (and a full quarter century since the original novel’s release), Jurassic Park will be coming back, this time as Jurassic World.

On June 12th, 2015, Jurassic World will kick off the summer blockbusters that follow the release of The Avengers: Age of Ultron. Formerly known only as Jurassic Park IV, Jurassic World’s script is being penned by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver who wrote 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes while it is directed by Colin Trevorrow who directed Safety Not Guaranteed. Though the writing of the team seems to support what Jurassic World is looking for, Trevorrow has some lofty shoes to fill from Spielberg’s original Jurassic Park even though the two sequels fell on less favorable reviews and adoration.
