Facebook Adds Friend Tagging To Statuses And Posts

facebook_twitterIf you’re a Twitter user like we are at The Flickcast, you’ve probably come to know and love the ability to reply or forward your friend’s Tweets, known as “@ tagging” or “retweeting”. It’s a great way to spread important news, argue on the internet, or just comment on the silly things your friends are saying via Twitter. But if you’re not a Twitter user, but want to do the same thing with your Facebook status, you’re in luck. Why?

Facebook has just launched this feature as well.

It works very similar to @ tagging, but instead of using Twitter usernames you’ll use your Facebook friend’s names after the “@”. This makes it easier to reply to your friends, since you won’t have to memorize any complicated usernames.

If you tag someone, they’ll recieve a notificaition, and vice versa. You can also reference groups that you belong to on Facebook or events you plan on attending. The gap between Twitter and Facebook is narrowing and blurring.

Will you use this new Facebook feature, or continue to retweet your friends on Twitter?

Peter Berg Says Smith and Theron Returning for ‘Hancock 2’

hancock-willsmithWith great comic-to-film news coming from left and right this week, there was bound to be one or two stories that make us cringe just a bit. Sadly, that story has to do with director Peter Berg talking up a sequel to last year’s successful foul-mouthed superhero film Hancock. Not only is there a sequel being planned, but it looks like Berg wants another A-lister alongside Will Smith and Charlize Theron.

According to our buddies at MTV Splashpage, the director has confirmed that the full cast is back, and that we may even see a new player:

The big reveal at the end of “Hancock” was that [Spoiler Alert!] both Smith and Theron’s characters are immortal gods who become vulnerable when near each other. For the sequel, Berg said we can expect the appearance of at least one more all-powerful god. What’s more, he’s got his eye on a well-known name to play a third superhero. “We have [someone in mind],” Berg said. “I’m not gonna tell you who, but we have!”

There hasn’t been much speculation on who the third “god” could be, but Will Smith and Charlize Theron are definitely considered to be A-list stars, so putting someone up on a poster alongside them and calling them a “well-known” player may be a pretty tall order. Our suggestion? Harrison Ford as the grizzled veteran god who just wants his family back. Thoughts?

Update: In addition to Smith and Theron, it seems Jason Bateman will also be returning as well. Good news for the film because any movie benefits from his participation.

Courtney Love Threatens Legal Action Over Cobain Avatar

29889290-29889295-slargeLooks like the fans aren’t the only one pissed about Kurt Cobain’s likeness being used for an avatar in Guitar Hero 5. Cobain’s widow, Courtney Love is pretty mad too. But she signed the contract allowing it, according to Kotaku.

Activision told Kotaku, “Guitar Hero secured the necessary licensing rights from the Cobain estate in a written agreement signed by Courtney Love to use Kurt Cobain’s likeness as a fully playable character in Guitar Hero 5.”

The issues started late Wednesday night when Love posted this on her Twitter:

“For the record this Guitar Hero shit is breach of contract on a Bullys part and there will be a proper addressing of this and retraction… WE are going to sue the shit out of ACtivision we being the Trust the Estate the LLC the various LLCs Cobain Enterprises.”

She later admitted that while she had seen an avatar of Cobain during the development stages, she asked to see a “better one”, and had never agreed to let her dead husband’s likeness into the game. Regardless of the merits of Love’s claim, Guitar Hero 5 came out earlier this month, and includes Cobain performing songs by both Bon Jovi and Flavor Flav, further sullying the memory of this revolutionary rock star.

Apple Updates Snow Leopard to 10.6.1

snow-leopard-boxAfter only a short time of release in the wild, Apple has today issued an update to its brand new version of OS X — code named Snow Leopard. This update, which should now be live in Software Update and at Apple’s website, provides several bug fixes and security enhancements which in typical Apple-speak could mean almost anything.

Here’s a list of at least some of the items this update addresses:

• Printer compatibility fixes for printers that do not properly appear in the “Add Printer” browser.
• Fix for DVD playback (when playback stops abruptly)
• Fix for the Dock (bug prevents removal of icons from the Dock)
• Fix for account set up and sending mail via SMTP servers in Mail
• Fix for Sierra Wireless 3G modems
• Adobe Flash Player update (new plug-in version 10.0.32.18)

Apparently, the Flash update is of particular importance because the version shipping with Snow Leopard has a number of security vulnerabilities fixed by this update. For the scoop on that, head on over to Adobe’s website. As with any OS update, we suggest you download and install the Combo Update instead of doing an update via Apple’s software update. Sadly, as of now, the Combo update doesn’t seem to be live at Apple’s download page yet so you may consider waiting until tomorrow to do the update.

‘SNL’ Announces First Four Hosts, Loses 2 Members

saturday_night_live-thumb-320x320-11158Each year, right before they start up a new season, the cast of Saturday Night Live gets an overhaul. Sometimes it’s good news, sometimes it’s bad. In the past few years, the show lost members like Maya Rudolph, Amy Pohler, Darrel Hammond, and now it it looks like relative newcomers Casey Wilson and Michaela Watkins will not be joining in the upcoming 35th season.

There is no public report on why Watkins was canned, but according to E! Online, the reason for Casey Wilson’s firing was due to her weight.

Our inside comedy sources tell us SNL producers told the curvy Casey to lose 30 pounds during the show’s summer hiatus. They pretty much demanded it. And whether Wilson just couldn’t drop the weight or she just only wanted to give her middle finger some exercise, she didn’t drop a damn pound. And that’s when she was axed, we’re told.
