‘Midnight Mass’ Goes to NBC

midnight-mass-cover-1According to The Hollywood Reporter, it looks like DC/Vertigo’s Midnight Mass comic, which has been a “hotly pursued” property for several years, has finally landed at NBC. Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts are on board to write the project for Warner Bros. TV and studio-based Jinks/Cohen Co.

From the trade: “Midnight,” which has received a script commitment with penalty from the network, revolves around Adam and Julia Kadmons, a sophisticated, sexy, globe-trotting husband-and-wife team who solve mysteries and crimes of the supernatural. Its based on the comic written by John Rozum and drawn by Jimmy Palmiotti.

In addition, almost a dozen producers at the studio had taken a stab at the comic, but this is the first time such a project has been set up at a network. Berg and Harberts are executive producing “Midnight” with Jinks and Cohen.

I guess it makes sense that NBC would finally commit to a Midnight Mass series now that their “other” comic inspired property Heroes seems to be on the way out. Plus, with AMC taking on The Walking Dead, NBC probably feels they need to get deeper into the comic biz. Although, snapping up this particular comic, one that only had a couple limited runs with Vertigo, doesn’t exactly spell “blockbuster” to me. Guess we’ll find out soon enough.

‘Kick-Ass’ Lands at Lionsgate

kick-ass-11When we brought you the last bits of information on Matthew Vaughn’s highly anticipated action/comedy Kick-Ass, the film, although one of the highlights of Comic-Con, was still looking for a distributor. Well, fortunately for fans of the comic and new fans excited for the film after viewing the bootleg trailer, its search for a distributor has ended with Lionsgate.

According to Variety, Lionsgate got its first look at the film on July 28th and has picked up domestic rights to it in a deal that’s described in the trade as “big.” This also means Lionsgate plans a wide release for the action/comedy sometime in 2010. As a reminder for those of you just joining us, Kick-Ass is based on a comic written by Mark Millar and drawn by John Romita Jr. and features Nicholas Cage, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Chloe Moretz and Aaron Johnson.

It follows the adventures of teenager Dave Lizewski, a New York City high school student, who takes his interest in comic books as inspiration to become a real-life superhero. When his exploits are recorded by an onlooker with a cell phone and posted to the Internets, he becomes a sensation and is given the moniker Kick-Ass. This is good news. Lionsgate knows how to release films like this. Glad it found a home.

Hands On with ‘Scribblenauts’ for Nintendo DS

scribblenautslogoAt Comic-Con, we at The Flickcast got to take a look at more than just comic books. We also got to check out some of the big video game releases coming out in the coming months. On the top of that list was Scribblenauts.

For those who haven’t heard of Scribblenauts, it is a puzzle game for the Nintendo DS in which players are given various scenarios that they must solve to get starites. Instead of platforming and jumping around levels, the player is given tools they can use to complete their task. One of the first examples has the main character Maxwell, standing in front of a tree with the starite sitting on top. Now you ask, “What tools are available?”

Well with Scribblenauts, you are not given a limited set of basic tools to work with. The unique aspect of Scribblenauts is how it allows the player to type in any object they want (excluding proper nouns, like someone’s Maxwell or a trademarked property like Micky Mouse) and put it to use in the game.

A Closer Look at Mike Judge’s ‘Extract’

Layout 1To many people, myself included, Mike Judge’s film Office Space makes me so happy I never had to get a “real” job and work in a soul-sucking office environment. Granted, I doubt my office experience would have ended quite the way the fictional one in the movie did, but I’m still glad never to have been the victim of an overbearing boss (who may have had sex with my girlfriend), a couple of so-called “efficiency experts” and corporate downsizing.

Office Space remains to this day one of the greatest tributes to the power of the individual striving against his (or her) corporate oppressors. And now, after some detours into other territory, Judge is back where he belongs and is bringing eager fans a brand new chapter in the struggle with his new film Extract — which also has a brand new website devoted to too.

For his new film, Judge returns to the workplace and turns his focus on a small business owner “who employs an odd cast of losers, loners and misfits in his flavor extract factory.” Judge is particularly excited to be back in the office. Says the director: “When Office Space tanked at the box office, I thought, ‘Okay, I was born to do something that nobody wants to see,’ and then as it became popular, it was more and more gratifying. So I think I’m finally back doing what I think I was born to do.”

Extract, which stars Jason Bateman, Mila Kunis, Kristen Wiig and Ben Affleck, hits theaters on September 4th. Meantime, be sure to check out all the info on the film and its unusual cast of characters at the film’s official site.

Game Review: ‘Trials HD’ For Xbox Live Arcade

bgskiintrialsHDThe Summer of Arcade on XBox Live has hit a small snag. Instead of bringing fresh new games, three of the four out so far have been remakes or re-releases. As enjoyable as Marvel vs. Capcom 2 was, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time Re-Shelled was a disappointment.

Now, the fourth game to be released on the Summer of Arcade is Trials HD, which may be the most awkward naming of an Arcade title yet (like when you download the demo of the game entitled “Trials HD Trial Game”), is also a remake but not of an arcade classic. Instead, Trials HD is simply an upgraded and updated version of a Flash game that has been floating around online for years that can be found here.
