WB Toying with Plans to Develop ‘Lego’ Pic

With the success of G.I. Joe and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen this summer, toy-based movies are hot properties in Hollywood. Variety is reporting that Warner Bros. is the latest studio to jump on the bandwagon and is planning to develop a movie around Lego and its iconic building blocks.

Scribes Dan and Kevin Hageman are penning the script for a family comedy that will mix live action and animation. The plot is under tight wraps, but has been described as an action adventure set in a Lego world. Dan Lin (Sherlock Holmes) will produce.

In the past, execs at Lego have turned down many development ideas to protect their brand. To date, Lego has made only a series of direct-to-DVD animated movies based on its Bionicle line.

But the company sparked to Lin and the Hageman brothers’ embrace of core values Lego desired in a film, especially “a fun factor, creativity and that imagination has no boundaries,” Lin explained. The film has been in development for more than a year, with the scribes and producers making trips to Denmark to work with Lego’s execs on the concept.

PS3 Gets Exclusive ‘Marvel vs. Capcom’ 2 Retail Edition with Bonus

m v c 2 advert

While XBox 360 users were given a three week jump on their time with Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Sony doesn’t want to leave their loyal fanboys in the dust. As a thank you for the patience of their fans they will be releasing an exclusive retail edition of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 through Gamestop. The exclusive packaging will contain a download code for the Playstation Network to download the game and be sold for $15.00. So then, people ask, why bother going to the retail store to pick up the game when they could just download it from home.

Included with every retail package of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 will be a voucher for a free one month subscription to Marvel Digital Comics (a $9.99 value). Marvel Digital Comics is Marvel’s online instant comics back issue service with literally thousands of issues of Marvel comics including everything from the first legendary one hundred issues of Amazing Spider-Man and Uncanny X-Men to obscure titles like Blink’s four issue 2001 miniseries with more titles being added all the time. Not a bad deal for a three week wait on the game as Playstation 3 owners get a $25 value for what it would have cost them to purchase Marvel vs. Capcom 2 regardless.

Marvel vs. Capcom 2′s exclusive retail edition with Marvel Digital Comic bonus for the Playstation 3 will be available on August 13th for $15 at Gamestop. The standard download only version of the game is currently available on XBox 360 through XBox Live Arcade for 1200 Microsoft Points ($15.00).

Dave’s Weekly Comic Book Recommendations

Things have certainly heated up this week with comics, as there is a whole crop of wonderful books coming out today from the “Big Two.”thumb160x_faea5132d4bb436233fa0b82a86123b4

From DC Comics, we have a plethora of Blackest Night books including the Batman spinoff and the main Blackest Night book comes out with issue two. Though, what I’m really looking forward to is Adventure Comics #1. I was pretty happy to see Bart Allen and Superboy revived in Legion of Three Worlds and Francis Manapul’s style on this book kind of reminds me of something from childhood.

For Marvel, I’d say the spotlight is on the new line of Ultimate Comics. Especially with David Lafuente on art for Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man #1. It just looks like a book full of spectacular fun. Of course, the excellent X-Men/Dark Avengers event continues with Utopia

My final recommendation this week is something for you Star Trek nerds: Nero. This book gives us the back story, besides about five lines of dialogue, the movie didn’t bother with.

As always, we here at The Flickcast care about what you read, so let us know what you liked/didn’t like this week in the comments.  And iof you don’t like what you see here, be sure to check out Midtown Comics comprehensive list of what comes out today.

‘The Walking Dead’ to AMC with Frank Darabont

the-walking-dead-1According to Variety, AMC is not resting on the laurels of its hit show Mad Men or the recently announced Prisoner mini-series and instead is ramping up production on new shows, starting with a huge undertaking in an adaptation of Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead — produced and directed by Frank Darabont. According to the article, the network is close to finalizing the deal with Darabont to write and direct a series adaptation of Kirkman’s comic. Gale Anne Hurd and David Alpert are also involved in the project as producers.

In the article, Joel Stillerman, AMC’s senior VP of programming, said the project appealed to them because of “the quality of the storytelling” in Kirkman’s work. The series will stay faithful to the tone of the original novels, he said. “This is not about zombies popping out of closets,” Stillerman said. “This is a story about survival, and the dynamics of what happens when a group is forced to survive under these circumstances. The world (in ‘The Walking Dead’) is portrayed in a smart, sophisticated way.”

In case you’re not familiar with the story of The Walking Dead, it concerns a group of survivors of a zombie apocalypse led by a police officer, Rick Grimes. The rag-tag group travels through the devastated waste that once was America in search of a safe place to call home. Along they way they face numerous obstacles, danger, attack, betrayal and death not only from zombies, but from other survivors turned savage and ruthless now that civilization has collapsed.

If this deal comes through and we do eventually see The Walking Dead brought to life by Frank Darabont, I could not be more pleased about it. As a fan of both The Walking Dead comics and Darabont as a writer/director — especially due to The Shawshank Redemption and The Mist — I can’t imagine a better combination. I’m going to be following this one very closely for sure.

The Flickcast – Episode 20: The Rise of Cobra

ferris-buellerThis week on The Flickcast, Chris, Matt and Christina discuss a whole slew of new topics and revisit a few old ones. Some of the things they cover in this episode include Green Hornet casting news, Steven Spielberg’s next movie, the somewhat surprising performance of G.I. Joe, Terminator 5 news, Tim Roth playing Abomination in two other movies, the death of John Hughes and a whole lot more.

The trio also makes some great picks this week with Christina’s choice of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off in honor of John Hughes, Matt’s choice of Running Scared starring Paul Walker and Chris’ favorite comic book Blackest Night, written by Geoff Johns and penciled by Ivan Reis.

Last, but certainly not least, in honor of the 20th episode, the team announced a cool contest for all the listeners of the show. So, be sure to listen to this week’s episode and then check back right here later today for all the details on how you can win some great prizes!

As always, if you have comments, questions, critiques or offers of sponsorship, feel free to hit us up in the comments, on Twitter and at Facebook, MySpace or via email.

Thanks for listening.

Xbox Adds New Features to Marketplace

xbox_360_liveAs we reported last week, XBox Live got an update this week featuring the Avatar Marketplace, Games on Demand and Ratings. We’ve decided to put together a list of the newest features, and show you some of the things added with this update.

Avatar Marketplace

The most anticipated addition is undoubtedly the Avatar Marketplace. Instead of waiting for small incremental additions to the Avatar clothing options, XBox Live subscribers will be able to purchase clothing, costumes, accessories and props for their Avatar to wear and show off to their friend’s list and appearing in games likes 1 vs. 100 or Bomberman Live.

For day one, Avatar Marketplace came with a large variety of items from eight different games like Gears of War 2, Halo 3 and Star Wars: The Clone Wars, three different clothing brands like Adidas, and two clothing styles, Steampunk and Recessionista. While there is a large variety to choose from, some items feel very expensive and may be overpriced since this Marketplace is still trying to learn its pricing structure.

Jackman Teases ‘Wolverine 2’ as Sexiest X-Men Film

x-men-origins-wolverineHugh Jackman is currently in the early stages of developing a sequel to X-Men Origins: Wolverine that will follow the clawed hero to Japan, and fans are speculating whether or not the live-action adaptation of Frank Miller and Chris Claremont’s story arc will be as dark as the acclaimed source material.

MTV Splashpage caught up with Jackman during the Teen Choice Awards to find out just how dark Wolverine 2 will be and discovered that not only will the film be dark, it will also be quite sexy.

“Wolverine can be pretty dark. Parts of that story were pretty dark. I don’t know if it’s the darkest, but I’m going to go out on a limb right now and say I think it will be the sexiest,” Jackman said. “There’s some female companionship—and not just one—for Wolverine. There’s quite a bit going on. My wife might have an issue with it, but I think the fans will like it.”

With a tease of that caliber, fans can’t help but wonder when the sequel will be hitting theaters. Jackman couldn’t offer any firm details, but he did hint at a potential release in 2012.

“If you look at the history [of the X-Men movies], it’s been every three years—three years exactly,” he stated. “So that might give you a good hint.”

Stay tuned to The Flickcast for the latest developments on the X-Men Origins: Wolverine sequel.
