Just in time for Joe Johnston to bring us yet another classic WWII era superhero in Captain America, The First Avenger, another film of his is hitting a milestone. Last week marked the 20th anniversary of the release of Disney’s The Rocketeer.
Hard to believe it’s been that long since Billy Campbell donned the brass helmet and flew around the Disney back lot with Alan Arkin by his side, but here we are.
Because the film was such a classic, as was Dave Stevens’ original comic book, diehard fan and animator John Banana put together a little homage animated short in which The Rocketeer shows some of his stuff.
The animation style is superb and the short managed to capture the original magic and wonder that the film brought us back in 1991. All without the use of Jennifer Connelly, Timothy Dalton, or Terry “Locke” O’Quinn.
Check it out after the jump, and let’s hope this revitalizes interest in the project enough for Disney to give us an animated reboot!

Sometimes the anticipation and enthusiasm for a movie can be enhanced by a series of great trailers. Unfortunately, anticipation and enthusiasm an also be killed by bad trailers or ones that just don’t resonate with the audience. Green Lantern is a recent example of this.
Fortunately, we don’t have that problem with the latest trailer for Marvel’s upcoming Summer action blockbuster Captain America: The First Avenger. In it we get a better look at the man who is to become Cap and we also get some wise, sage advise from Stanley Tucci’s Dr. Erskine as he tells our hero that “Whatever happens, stay who you are.”
Good advice and a great trailer. This movie continues to look amazing and I can’t wait for it to be released. I’ll be in line before day one if possible.
Check out the trailer after the break. Captain America: The First Avenger hits theaters on July 22nd.

Ok fans, here’s the one you’ve been waiting for. The first official full trailer for Captain America has arrived (via ET) and lo it is good.
In it we get a real feel for the story and see all our favorite characters in their full glory. From the scrawny Steve Rogers and Dr. Erskine to the Red Skull, Tony Stark’s dad and the man himself, Captain America, all the characters look awesome and just as they should.
We also get a look at some of the great action scenes from the film and from the trailer we can see that director Joe Johnston and his team have gone to great lengths to make this one a worthy successor to the first two Iron Man films. Kudos to them.
In short, the movie looks great and all of us here at The Flickcast are counting the days until this movie arrives. In case you’re wondering, the number of days is 121.
Click through to check out the trailer. Captain America hits theaters on July 22nd.

It’s starting to look a lot like Avengers around here as the first poster for Captain America has now arrived. In it we get a good look at Cap himself (as played by Chris Evans) as well as some clues to what we can expect from the film.
Obviously, at least from the poster, we can expect Cap to engage in some battles that result in him getting quite dirty. In addition, it seems he’s out to avenge something or someone in the movie. Perhaps that’s why he’s called the “First Avenger”? I bet that’s a good guess.
Still, Evans looks pretty cool in the poster and from the overall look I feel safe to say that the film, and the character, are in good hands with Joe Johnston. Check out the full poster after the jump. Look for Captain America: The First Avenger in theaters on July 22nd. That date can’t get here fast enough.
Ok, what do you guys think of the poster? Does it work for you or not? Sound off in the comments.

Let the speculation and artist renderings end as we now have the first “official” look at Chris Evens in costume as Captain America in the upcoming film. The pic, which graces the cover of the upcoming issue of Entertainment Weekly, shows Evans in costume, mask off and shield at the ready.
Based on this pic it seems his costume design is quite close to the early concept sketches that leaked online earlier this summer. But its not only the cover of the magazine we’re interested in as Evans also spoke about accepting the role in the film and admitted his reluctance about taking it on.
“At the time, I remember telling a buddy of mine, ‘If the movie bombs, I’m f—ed. If the movie hits, I’m f—ed,’” said Evans, who admitted that his reluctance was based entirely on fear. “I realized my whole decision making process was fear based, and you never want to make a decision out of fear.”
“I was just scared,” he added. “I can’t believe I was almost too chicken to play Captain America.”
Director Joe Johnston, however, had no such reservations about Evans as he described the character as “. . . an everyman who in the course of a few minutes become a perfect human specimen. That has to create some interesting personal issues.” Good point Mr. Johnston.
Now that we’ve seen Evans as Captain America, what do we think? Also, take a look at a slightly bigger version of the photo after the jump.

Coming on the heels of Jeremy Renner’s casting as Hawkeye in The Avengers comes some more great Marvel movie news: Stanley Tucci has recently been cast as Dr. Abraham Erskine, the creator of the Super-Soldier serum that turns Chris Evans into the titular character in Captain America: The First Avenger.
From a Marvel Studios press release:
In the early comics, Dr. Erskine was a German scientist behind Project Rebirth, the secret experiment that created the Super Soldier known as Captain America. Joe Johnston will direct the film penned by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely.
“Captain America: The First Avenger” will focus on the early days of the Marvel Universe when Steve Rogers volunteers to participate in an experimental program that turns him into the Super Soldier known as Captain America.
Not only does this confirm the role for Tucci, but also proves that Marvel is planning on making this film mostly about Steve Rogers’ time before and after taking the Super Soldier serum, rather than his costumed days as Captain America, either during WWII or today.
Tucci joins a heavily growing cast of Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan, Hayley Atwell, and Hugo Weaving as The Red Skull. Expect more casting news to release soon, as the film is starting shooting in London. Be sure to catch Captain America: The First Avenger in theaters on July 22, 2011.

When it comes to news about Captain America: The First Avenger, we’ve been pretty conservative. It’s hard to not run just about every scoop that passes by our desks, given how excited we are for this film, but considering how early we are in the production, it’s hard to tell what’s real and what is just hopeful speculation.
A few days ago, word first hit the web about the illustrious costume that Chris Evans will be donning as the titular character. It started off as a first-hand account of sketches that they got over at Joblo. Those descriptions turned into a few fan sketches, which then turned into professional renders of the costume from our pals over at AICN. Talk about a collaborative effort.
As you can see after the jump, the costume resembles more of the Ultimates Cap rather than the “wing-eared pirate boots” look that fans knew and loved for nearly a century. The suit looks to be more modern than anything else, which means we could still see the old wing ears in the first half of the film. Given the costumes that Marvel has churned out in other films, we’re quite pleased it’s not black leather.
Joe Johnston’s Captain America: The First Avenger, slated for release on July 11, 2011, is currently shooting in London with Hayley Atwell, Sebastian Stan, and Hugo Weaving as Red Skull.

While this is definitely a cool idea, it should be noted that this piece of news is most definitely a rumor as of now and should be treated as such.
With all eyes still on Jon Favreau’s Iron Man 2 as it continues to make money at the worldwide box office, most Marvel fans are already ready for more from the cinematic universe. We’ve got Thor on the way next and then Joe Johnston’s Captain America. But after that, everything leads to Joss Whedon’s The Avengers in 2012.
We’ve heard we’ll see just about every Marvel character in The Avengers the company currently has the film rights to including The Hulk, Thor, Cap, Iron Man, Ant Man, and Hawkeye. Now we’re getting word that the main villains of the film could be the alien race The Skrulls.
The highlight of this insider scoop (DISCLAIMER: which has not been confirmed by the studio itself) is that the shape-changing alien race the Skrulls are being used as the main antagonists for The Avengers. Not only that, but the Skrulls will ‘brainwash’ and use the Hulk in a similar fashion Loki did in the comics.
Don’t expect a full on alien invasion, though; that will have to wait for a sequel. The Skrulls’ role will be largely clandestine, similar to the way S.H.I.E.L.D. operates.

Though it was rumored months ago, Marvel Studios has officially announced that actor Hugo Weaving (Agent Smith in The Matrix, among others) has been cast as the main antagonist, the Red Skull, in Joe Johnston’s upcoming Captain America: The First Avenger.
The news doesn’t come as much of a shock, even without the rumors. Weaving has made himself known as one of the top character actors to play a marketable villain since his work in The Matrix, and has even reprrised his badassery in Michael Bay’s Transformers films as Megatron. Also, director Johnston just finished and released The Wolfman for Universal, which cast Weaving as one of the main characters.
In the film, the character is said to be an updated version of the villain we know from the comics. In this incarnation, Johann Schmidt is drafted into the Third Reich and given the codename “The Red Skull.” In the comics, Schmidt is given the name due to an accident that caused his head to be…a red skull. Whether or not they will actually put Weaving in tons of makeup has yet to be announced.
The film also stars Sebastian Stan (Hot Tub Time Machine) as Bucky Barnes, Hayley Atwell (The Prisoner) as Peggy Carter, and Chris Evans as the titular Captain America. Captain America: The First Avenger is currently set to hit theaters on July 22, 2011.

Based on reports from around the Internets, including both The Hollywood Reporter and Variety, it would appear Marvel Studios has picked the actor who will play Captain America in The First Avenger: Captain America. The actor is, as was rumored over the last few days, Chris Evans.
According to the reports, Evans accepted an offer made by the comic book publisher late last week, beating out a number of other actors, including Channing Tatum and Garrett Hedlund, who were being considered for the high-profile role. Although the deal is still being finalized with contracts being written and, presumably rewritten, it seems a done deal. And quite a deal it is.
Evans will be in at least three Captain America movies, starting with The First Avenger: Captain America. He will also appear in the first The Avengers movie along with Robert Downey, Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Edward Norton as the Incredible Hulk. That film is reportedly set for a May 4, 2012 release. Plus, he may also appear in other films based on Marvel characters to tie in with the developing on-screen Marvel universe.
Now that things appear set I have to say I’m not entirely disappointed that Evans will be taking on the role. Of all the people mentioned previously, he seems pretty well suited. It doesn’t even bother me that he already played Johnny Storm in both Fantastic Four films. I think he’s got what it takes to make a good Cap. I hope I’m right.

In the latest The First Avenger: Captain America news, HeatVision is reporting that Hugo Weaving (Matrix, Lord of the Rings) is Marvel Studio’s first choice to star as the film’s villain, Red Skull. In the comic books, Red Skull is Captain America’s archenemy, engaging in espionage and sabotage as Adolf Hitler’s right-hand man.
If Weaving is tapped, it would reunite the star with director Joe Johnston, whom he worked with in this year’s The Wolfman. In other casting news, the list of Captain America contenders appears to have thinned.
We recently reported that five actors were in the running. However, HeatVision and Deadline New York have both reported that John Krasinski is no longer in the race for the coveted role. According to the sites, Marvel is now considering Wilson Bethel (Generation Kill), Mike Vogel (Cloverfield), Chris Evans (Fantastic Four) and Garrett Hudlund (Tron Legacy), who have all either read, tested, or received test offers.
The First Avenger: Captain America is slated for a July 11, 2011 release.
