There’s a lot of interesting stuff on the radar this week. An Avatar alumni could face off against Conan, Modern Warfare developers bring a fight to Activision, and director Guy Ritchie may be breathing new life into the heroes of Camelot.
Fox finds its shadow for $1 million and David Slade may be the man
Fans of the comic book series The Shadow rejoice as it seems the reboot continues to move forward. While it was thought Sony and director Sam Raimi (Spider-Man, Army of Darkness) would bring a new version of the character to the big screen things have changed somewhat.
After Raimi began shopping the property around Fox decided to purchase the rights. Sadly, it sounds like Raimi may no longer direct, possibly replaced by David Slade. Slade directed the vampire film Thirty Days of Night which, unfortunately, felt just that long in the theater. Here’s hoping he can put a little more adrenaline into The Shadow.
How I Met your…Smurf?
Neil Patrick Harris will be venturing to the land of blue, three apples tall creatures in Smurfs: The Movie. The How I Met Your Mother star won’t be playing a Smurf though. As this film will be a mix of live action and animation, Harris will be playing the lead live action character. Too bad, I would have liked to know just which Smurf he’d play. “Awesome” Smurf maybe? Let us know your picks in the comments.
‘Wolverine 2’ starts shooting next January
X-Men Origins: Wolverine was pretty good, but it was missing one thing: ninjas! Hopefully that will be rectified in the sequel which is set to begin shooting next January. Delving into Wolvie’s Japanese mythos the script follows stories penned by two pretty big names:
“Based on a story cycle by Frank Miller and Chris Claremont, Wolverine’s adventures in martial arts will be a love story featuring a Japanese actress, I am told. ‘It’s a beautiful story,’ says a source, ‘and will be very different than the first film.'”
Okay, I’m not really sold on the “love story” angle but considering the number of women that went to see Wolverine (pretty much for mutant hunk, Hugh Jackman) at least this will be one you can take your girlfriends to.

Marvel’s chief fanboy, Joe Quesada, was at this year’s Big Apple Comic-Con to talk about what’s going on in the Marvel universe. With the recent accusation of Marvel by Disney it’s hard to deny the company’s success. So, just how does Marvel continue to compete against DC it’s competitors? According to Quesada, “The way we differentiate ourselves is by not sucking.”
Yes, you read that correctly. Marvel’s Editor-in-Chief claims “not sucking” is a sound business strategy. Okay, I can’t argue that point. From a business perspective not sucking, or at the very least sucking less then your competition, should be somewhere in the business plan and/or mission statement.
Unfortunately for Quesada, someone at Marvel hasn’t read said business plan. If they had we, the fans, would not have been forced to endure Ghost Rider, either Fantastic Four film or the trilogy of reboots that was The Punisher, The Punisher and The Punisher: War Zone. Quesada should probably send out a memo to the staff regarding his suck less initiative just as a reminder.

Warning! This post contains spoilers.
In an unprecedented event, many comic book retailers across the country received and released Captain America #600 today, two days before the regular release day. It was said that this issue will “change everything” and have a huge impact on the rest of the comic book world. Why? Because according to Marvel comics Editor in Chief Joe Quesada (who will also be doing a special variant cover for issue #1 of the comic), Steve Rogers (aka Captain America) is returning from the grave.
“We’ve been patiently planning for this moment for 21 years. Captain America will return next month in a five-comic book series, “Captain America Reborn.”
For those who aren’t aware, Steve Rogers was gunned down in a highly publicized March 2007 issue, which was quite a bold move at the time, killing off a main character and allegedly having him “stay dead”. From there, Cap’s former sidekick, Bucky Barnes, took the mantle of Captain America and continued fighting for justice.
Many fans are outraged, stating that this is another “Superman tease” and how nobody in the comic industry has the ability to keep a character dead. Is this true? Will this have the same outcome as another dead character over at DC? We’ll all find out soon. But until then, you can check out the spiffy Captain America Reborn trailer from the new Marvel minisite, and a larger Quesada cover variant, after the jump.
