The musical is one of the most interesting types of storytelling. It is all together ludicrous to have all of your characters stop what they are doing and relate their emotions in song. But for all that silliness it is also one of the most pure and powerful ways to convey emotion and impact onto an audience.
One of the most popular, and longest running, musicals out there is Les Miserables, based on the Victor Hugo novel. The story is classic and has been adapted before for film, but now the popular musical version is receiving the big budget cinematic treatment.
Now we get our first look at what exactly we can expect from this big budget cinematic adaptation in the form of the film’s first trailer. You can judge for yourself if it feels suitably epic for you, but I can assure you this feels very right. The cast seems spot on, and the look and tone seem to be right as well.
For those of you who have yet to experience the music of Les Miserables in some form or another yet in life, do yourself a favor and pencil this one in to your year-end movie watching calender.
The movie comes out this December and you can check out the trailer after the jump.

With Glee going strong on Fox, The Muppets sweeping across the country, and everyone up to their ears with Christmas song, the last thing anyone wants is yet another dose of musical. And that’s just what they’re getting!
The first trailer for the star-studded film adaptation of the Broadway hit Rock of Ages is finally here, and has plenty of Alec Baldwin, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Tom Cruise for you to shake a stick at.
For those who haven’t heard of this phenomenon that swept the east coast, here’s the premise:
“Rock of Ages” tells the story of small town girl Sherrie and city boy Drew, who meet on the Sunset Strip while pursuing their Hollywood dreams. Their rock ‘n’ roll romance is told through the heart-pounding hits of Def Leppard, Joan Jett, Journey, Foreigner, Bon Jovi, Night Ranger, REO Speedwagon, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister, Poison, Whitesnake, and more.
Plenty of rock covers, and even more recognizable faces. Take a look at the trailer after the jump, and catch Rock of Ages in theaters on June 1st.

Green Day is a generation defining band. They have grown and evolved with their fans consistently over the past two decades but have also managed to remain as relevant today as they were when their first hits came out in the early ’90s.
Green Day’s evolution as a band took another interesting turn last year when their latest mega-hit album ‘American Idiot’ was adopted into a stage musical. Logically there is only one place to go after you take Broadway: Hollywood!
Deadline is reporting that Universal Pictures is looking into turning the successful musical into a feature film:
Universal Pictures is negotiating to turn the Green Day-fueled Broadway musical American Idiot into a feature film. Dustin Lance Black, the Oscar-winning Milk scribe, is in talks to write the script, and Michael Mayer will direct.
Mayer helmed the stage run of the musical, which is closing on Broadway April 24 and launching a tour in the fall. Black most recently scripted J. Edgar, the Clint Eastwood film that stars Leonardo DiCaprio as J. Edgar Hoover.

Fringe fans everywhere are counting down the time before tonight’s episode, as it marks a special one. The episode, titled “Brown Betty” takes a turn for the bizarre (no surprise) as Walter tells a tale of the gang in the form of a noir musical.
For those worried that this is just a throw away episode, we can assure you that the story will progress, just with a bit of flavor in the form of a classic crime noir and a few musical numbers.
We brought you two teasers for tonight’s episode, but today we’re bringing you something a little more special, as Special Agent Broyles (Lance Reddick) sings the blues in a brand new clip from tonight’s episode. We’re told that only Reddick and Anna Torv (Olivia) will be getting musical numbers, so this is your chance to see half of the songs in tonight’s episode.
Check out the clip after the jump, and be sure to catch the “Brown Betty” musical episode of Fringe tonight on Fox at 9PM ET/PT.

This week, things are getting a bit weird on Fringe, which is an understatement if you’re a regular viewer of the show. This week, things get turned around as we’re told a story of our favorite Fringe characters in the style of a classic crime noir–with a musical twist. From Fox:
While Walter (John Noble) deals with some very upsetting news, he tells Olivia’s niece, Ella, a fairy tale in which the entire gang gets caught up in a mysterious new adventure that includes musical performances by Olivia (Anna Torv) and Agent Broyles (Lance Reddick).
So in order to set itself apart from previous musical episodes of supernatural dramas, this one in particular will take place in a 1940’s noir film. A nice touch. Check out two different sneak previews of Thursday night’s episode, entitled “Brown Betty” after the jump, and be sure to catch the episode on Fox at 9/8C.

Move over Spider-Man, there’s a new caped crusader looking to take over the stage! Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment are looking into developing a live Batman stage show to tour across the country. While the idea was ultimately a flop for Marvel and “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark”, DC and WB think that the idea will flourish, as it’s not a musical or broadway-style production.
This would be an arena production made for kids, like Disney on Ice or Cirque De SoLe, just less trippy and erotic. Also unlike the failed Spidey musical, there will be some veteran comic talent behind this production. From Heat Vision:
Alan Burnett and Stan Berkowitz, longtime animation veterans whose credits include Batman and Superman television shows as well as such animated movies as “Batman: Mask of the Phantasm” and “Justice League: The New Frontier,” are writing the story and script. The logline is being kept under wraps, but it’s known that the show will feature numerous villains.
Warner Bros. Consumer Products is spearheading the project, whose deals with NGM and WLP are licensing agreements. Other partners might come aboard.
With Berkowitz and Burnett working on the script, you can expect to see less of a “watered down” version of the hero’s adventures, much like you would see at the top of the hour at most Six Flags theme parks. Also, with the team writing a script, you can plan for this story to take place inside the walls of the rich animated Superman/Batman/Justice League continuity.
The company is still in the early planning stages, but the idea has been planted, and they plan on moving ahead. There is no set time table, but the idea is to have the show open around the time of Christopher Nolan’s planned Batman sequel.

We’ve been covering this movie quite a bit here at The Flickcast, mostly because it looks really good. Previously, we brought you some nice pictures from the film, an outstanding preview video and an exclusive clip.
Now, here’s your first look at the full trailer for Rob Marshall’s upcoming musical extravaganza NINE, which first appeared over at Apple’s trailer site. In this trailer, we’re given much more of the story from the film, which concerns disillusioned director Guido Contini (Daniel Day-Lewis) as he reaches a creative and personal crisis of epic proportion, while balancing the numerous women in his life.
We also get a peek at some of the acting performances, which even though this is obviously a musical, will still feature prominently in the film — especially when you’ve assembled the acting talent of stars such as Day-Lewis, Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz and Judi Dench.
Check out the new trailer after the jump. NINE opens in NY and LA on December 18 and everywhere else on Christmas Day.

Things have been heating up on Glee with only 7 out of the 22 episode season airing so far on FOX. Will and Terri Shuester got a bit more argumentative when Terri decided to become a nurse at the school, thus infiltrating any flirting that may have been going on between he and Emma. Also the glee group is hitting some troubled times as Sue Sylvester continues to make their lives hell. What else could possibly go wrong?
Well it looks like tonight we’ll find out, as Jane Lynch’s Sue Sylvester gets appointed as co-director of the glee group. Will is forced to play nice with the totalitarian cheerleading coach, and Quinn’s secret may be out in the open once the school paper writes an exposé.
Click through to check out four new clips from tonight’s episode, “Throwdown”, which airs at 9pm/8pm Central. Be sure to hit iTunes after the show, as tonight’s music includes Jill Scott’s “Hate On Me”, The Supremes’ “You Keep Me Hangin’ On”, Jordin Sparks and Chris Brown’s “No Air”, and Avril Lavigne’s “Keep Holding On”.
