Who wouldn’t want to see a movie starring the dream cast of James McAvoy, Emily Blunt, Michael Caine and Maggie Smith, with cameos by Ozzy Osbourne, Dolly Parton, Patrick Stewart and Hulk Hogan? They had me at James McAvoy.
Throw in some Shakespeare source material and music by Elton John, and one would think we were set. But Gnomeo and Juliet does the seeming impossible—takes all of these phenomenal elements and churns out a movie that’s only sporadically entertaining and completely forgettable. Unlike its durable garden decoration characters, this movie will wash out of your brain with the first drizzle.
Gnomeo and Juliet’s first and biggest problem is its lack of original, engaging characters. Gnomeo, Gnomeo, wherefore art thou, Gnomeo? Who knows, but he’s just your standard love-stricken youth determined to prove himself to the world and win his girl, while Juliet is your standard spunky heroine who’s trapped in a narrow female role but has the ninja skills to fight out.

We’ve been bringing you quite a lot of coverage of next month’s release of Brütal Legend, Activision’s newest explosion of heavy metal and fantasy video games. Jack Black, Tim Curry, Lemmy, and Ozzy Osbourne are just some of the names that lend their talents to this epic video game, and there’s more gore and humor than you can shake a stick at!
The plot is about Eddie Riggs (Jack Black), the world’s greatest roadie, who can rig or fix just about anything in the world. He gets transported to a mystical world where rock is REAL and used to vanquish evil foes. You follow Riggs as he takes down demons and dragons using his epic axe and electric guitar.
The game is quite a lot of fun, and we’ll be sure to have a review up for you to check out soon. But for now, you get an exclusive peak at the intro video from the game that sets up the story. An interesting tool used throughout the game is an option to choose gore and profanity over censored violence and dialogue. This allows some of the older fans to take advantage of the brutality of Brütal Legend, while also appeasing parents who don’t want their children subjected to such things.
Check out the video after the jump. Brütal Legend hits game stores on Rocktober 13th.

Keeping up with the huge metal and rock theme in today’s video games, who’s to say you can’t combine the epic theme of a Lord of the Rings type game with names like Ozzy Osbourne and Jack Black? Well, with Brutal Legend, you can, and now you can even play the demo of the game before everybody else!
We’ve got a few demos to give away, and we want you to have them. ALL you have to do is keep an eye on our Twitter updates, because you’re going to need to @reply to us. Two random @replies will get themselves a free copy of the demo to download EARLY before everyone else gets it.
Also, if you don’t get chosen today, you can pre-order the game at Gamestop this Friday (9/17) to get access to the demo. The demo will be released officially to the rest of the world starting next Thursday for Xbox Live Gold members and on October 1st for Xbox Live Silver and PSN members. Be sure to also pick up your copy of Brutal Legend on “Rocktober” 13th! Stay Brutal!!
