Dungeons & Dragons Goes On the Road In New ‘Arena of War’ Mobile Game

DnD-Arena-of-War-1

If you’re a geek, at one time or another, you’ve likely played Dungeons & Dragons. Heck, you may be playing this week or even while you’re reading this very article. It’s a great way to pass the time and something we love to do sitting around a table with some of your best friends.

But wouldn’t it be cool to be able to take those fun times on the road with you? Well, if you’ve always wanted a mobile version of D&D, you’re in luck because Wizards of the Coast and DeNA have partnered together to do just that.

That’s right, the two companies will soon bring Dungeons & Dragons: Arena of War, the first ever D&D mobile game, to an iOS or Android device near you.

According to the official press release for the game: “Arena of War puts players in the Forgotten Realms for a battle roleplaying game that combines questing, character leveling, and small team collaboration with the most engaging mobile game mechanics on the market, such as in-game events and massive multiplayer competitions.”

It will be available later this year. For more info on the game, or to pre-register, head on over to the game’s official site.

Geek: The Worlds Biggest LEGO Spaceship Is an X-Wing

LEGO Star Wars X-Wing Starfighter

Geeks and LEGO go together like Pizza and Beer. Or, like Han Solo and Luke Skywalker. Speaking of Luke Skywalker, a LEGO replica of his favorite fighter, the X-Wing , was recently unveiled during a ceremony in New York’s Times Square.

This amazing feet of engineering is the world’s largest LEGO model and is a 1:1 representation of the X-Wing. The massive replica took 32 master builders, five million LEGO bricks and over 17,000 hours to complete.

The model weighs nearly 46,000 pounds, stands 11 feet tall and 43 feet long, with a wingspan of 44 feet. This was done, in part, to help Cartoon Network kick off their new TV series The Yoda Chronicles on May 29th.

The model itself will be heading to the LEGOLAND California Resort where it will be installed through the remainder of the year. Check out more pics of this awesome LEGO X-Wing after the break.

Movies: A New ‘The World’s End’ Trailer Is Here

the-worlds-end-cast-2

Recently, we were able to bring you a shorter, and somewhat vague, trailer for the next cinematic collaboration between Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Edgar Wright called The Worlds’End. Now, there’s a much longer trailer that finally, we think, captures the essence of this movie.

What is that essence? Well, it’s a movie where a group of pals go on an “Epic” pup crawl only to discover the world is in danger and they’re the only ones who can save it. Oh, and they drink a lot of beer in the process.

And really, who doesn’t like beer?

The film also stars Martin Freeman, Paddy Considine and Rosamund Pike. It hits theaters on August 29th.

Check out the trailer after the break.

Games: XBox 360 and XBLA Titles Won’t Carry Over to XBox One But Achievements and Gamerscore Will

XBox Live

As we learned already, the XBox One isn’t going to be backwards compatible with XBox 360 games. Personally, I don’t see this as an issue. When I got my XBox 360, I didn’t worry about playing my original XBox games on it. And any of us who were born before the PS2 rose to prominence remember the days when we got our SNES and the only ones who questioned if the NES games would still play on it were our parents. We didn’t care back then.

In an interview with The Verge, Microsoft Xbox Live vice president Marc Whitten said, “The system is based on a different core architecture, so back-compat doesn’t really work from that perspective.” As a result, the content of the XBox Live Arcade on the XBox 360 won’t be able to carry over to the XBox One. Since the XBox One’s hardware configuration won’t support XBox 360 discs, it makes sense that the downloadable content would not be supported as well.

Editorial: How I Feel About XBox One 24 Hours Later

microsoft-xbox-one

Since we already told you the important facts about the XBox One yesterday, I thought I would take time to let it sink in and then give my reaction to what was announced. Any of you follow me on Twitter saw my initial reactions yesterday, but I wanted to be fair and take a step back before voicing my actual thoughts instead of just hoping for retweets. This isn’t about being a fanboy or ranting, but just my honest reactions to the announcements.

First off, the name has to be addressed. I like the fact that Microsoft didn’t go with calling the console just “XBox” again and at least the “One” differentiates it. I call my current console the “360” in conversation and I don’t doubt that I’ll end up calling the XBox One just the “XBox,” but it was at least better than Apple’s iPad, iPad 2 and then “new iPad.” And let’s be honest, the name isn’t what sells a system as the Wii proved since every gamer ripped that name to shreds.

Also, thank you to Microsoft for showing the system. They needed to do something to separate themselves from Sony and the PlayStation 4 and rather than continue the pissing contest that is going to reach E3, they just showed what it looked like. Much like the name, the overall look of the system isn’t going to make or break the sale of a console (again take a look at the Wii). I was happy to see most of the design on the controller remained and was happy to see the D-Pad had been changed as it is especially reviled by fighting gamers.

Hooray for Blu-Ray. Although that means my HD-DVD is now officially in the same category as Betamax and Laserdisc.

I appreciate Skype being on the XBox One and integrated with the “Snap” feature, but I feel like I’ll never use it. The last thing I want when watching TV or a movie is to have someone talking to me. Maybe if I was a sports guy and wanted to talk trash during a game with my friend across the country during a basketball game, I’d be down. But if I am watching The Walking Dead, don’t you dare try calling me during the show.

Movies: Check Out a Trailer for the Vampire Pic ‘Byzantium’ With Gemma Arterton

Gemma-Arterton-Byzantium-1

For whatever reason, we never seem to get tired of vampire movies. Although, we could do with a few less of the Twilight variety.

Fortunately, the upcoming vampire pic Byzantium looks interesting and also doesn’t seem to feature too many tween vampires or other angsty bits. Instead, it has a mother/daughter vampire team, in the form of Saoirse Ronan and Gemma Arterton, and is directed by Neil Jordan who knows a thing or two about vampire movies.

Although, that doesn’t necessarily mean much considering the last one featured Tom Crusie as Lestat. Still, based on the trailer, we willing to give him another chance.

Look for Byzantium in theaters from IFC Films on June 28th. Check out the trailer after the break.
