TV RECAP: ‘The Walking Dead’ Episode 309 – ‘The Suicide King’

walking dead suicide king

Daryl and Merle are in the circle pit, and The Governor tells everyone that they will fight to the death, with the winner being free. Merle starts beating on Daryl, and Daryl tries to fight back.

Merle tells Daryl to go with it, and they eventually manage to push the “walkers-on-sticks” into the crowd and make a break for it. Rick and the others provide cover, and Merle and Daryl are able to escape. As they are leaving Woodbury, the gate is slightly open, and some walkers start entering the town.

While Rick’s group is out saving Daryl, the remaining members (Herschel, Carl, Carol, and Beth), try to make peace with Tyreese and his group. But, Herschel warns them, the final decision lies with Rick, not him.

TV NEWS: ‘Do No Harm’ Cancelled After Two Weeks Due to Record Low Ratings

do-not-harm-nbc-550x310

Some shocking (to me, at least) news this week in the world of TV.  Do No Harm has been cancelled by NBC after just two episodes.  I guess if I had been paying more attention I may have seen it coming.  The premiere, which aired on January 31st, had reportedly been the lowest rated series premiere in the history of the major networks.  Episode 2 did even worse.

With some busy time at work cutting into my schedule, I had to hold off on the premieres of Do No Harm and The Americans.  I wasn’t sure if I would like Do No Harm, so I decided to watch it first figuring I could always turn it off if it was a dud.  What happened was, I actually enjoyed it.  It had an interesting mix of medical drama and personal drama.  Though I must admit that I was unsure of how they could keep the Jekyll/Hyde aspect going for an extended period of time.  Felt more like a miniseries or one season type story.

Movie Review: ‘Side Effects’

se

Side Effects is the perfect response to Broken City and Promised Land, two films that offered great potential but drowned themselves in shallowness, eschewing dimension and complexity to make the bad guys really bad while taking their message as inherently superior. In short, they were two films that purported a moral they never got around to discussing. Side Effects does not.

And it is not largely because it’s not an “issue” film — it’s a thriller, and the mystery is compelling, the performances are convincing, and the end is satisfying for its distinct lack of finger wagging.  Soderbergh keeps the story unceasingly human, and when the guilty party is revealed, their reasons and actions are sound. Names are given faces — Soderbergh does not hide behind the trope of a faceless evil corporation, as the trailer would let you believe.

Jude Law plays Dr. Jonathan Banks, a psychiatrist who takes it upon himself to treat the disturbed Emily (Rooney Mara) after she slams her car into the wall of a parking garage. Her husband Martin is recently paroled for fraud, and his return has sparked a suicidal turn in Emily. Banks puts her on a new drug, and things get much worse.

That’s about as far as I can go without spoiling anything– Banks gets embroiled in the consequences and tries to figure out what the Hell is going on.

Check This Out: Trailer for the Kubrick Documentary ‘Room 237’

room-237-movie

We don’t often feature documentaries here at The Flickcast. Not sure exactly why that is, especially when the doc in question is about one of the greatest horror films of all time, which is based on one of the best horror novels of all time and directed by one of the greatest directors of all time.

We’re talking, of course, about Stanley Kubrick and his masterpiece The Shining, based on the novel by Stephen King. There’s a documentary coming out soon about the film and it’s creators and it’s called Room 237. If you’ve seen The Shining, you’ll understand. If not, you have bigger problems than can be solved here.

We’ve got a trailer for it after the break. Room 237 comes to theaters and iTunes on March 29th.

Look Ahead to the Return of ‘Grimm’ and ‘Revolution’

Grimm

Two TV shows, alike in network but not in story. Two returns to the air a short time away. Therefore, as we often do, we’ve got previews for the return of Grimm, one of our favorite shows, and Revolution, a show that’s starting to grow on us.

In the previews you can see a bit of a recap of the past season so far and, of course, some hints about what to expect for the rest of the season. Naturally, NBC doesn’t reveal too much, because that would spoil the fun.

Anyway, enough from us, let’s get to the previews. They can be found, as these things usually can, after the break.

Look for Revolution to return Monday, March 25th at 10/9C and Grimm to come back on Friday, March 8th at 9/8C.

Warner Brothers Might Be Going Back To The Drawing Board For ‘Justice League’

justice-league-cartoon-jpg_092615

Last week when I spoke about the looming doom that is Man of Steel I might not been clear what I was so worried about. I was not convinced Man of Steel itself was going to be a bad film, I was more worried about what the creative choices of the new Superman movie would mean for the immediate future of the DC cinematic universe.

It looks as if those fears have just been given an unfortunate boost. Rumors are flying that Warner Brothers is about to toss out their current Justice League script because it apparently sucks. Badass Digest is reporting that new writers are on order as the current script is as good as trash:

I’ve now heard from multiple sources that the Will Beall script for Justice League has been scrapped. The story from each source is the same: it’s terrible. Some sources seem to think the whole movie is going to fall apart and never happen, while some believe that Warner Bros will keep moving forward, unwilling to lose the superhero arms race.
