The Flickcast – Page 235 of 1030 – Stuff Nerds Love

One of Next Summer’s Big Contenders, ‘Pacific Rim’, Unleashes an Intriguing First Image

It is never to early to get excited about one of next summer’s tent pole films. So with that in mind we turn our gaze to the first official image from Pacific Rim, Guillermo Del Toro’s love letter to Japanese giant monster movies. That last sentence alone should have you contemplating lining up now for the best possible seat for the film.

One of the stars of Pacific Rim is the endlessly cool Idris Elba who is on the fast track to out dueling Samuel L. Jackson to the most bad ass mother in Hollywood title. Further establishing that claim is this image in question from Pacific Rim.

Cool is a word thrown around a lot these days, so much so that it has kind of lost some luster. Allow me to stress fully how cool this is, Elba just standing there in his giant robot flight suit, presumably about to go lay some smack down on giant monsters in the streets of Hong Kong. This exists!

Giant monster movies are cheesy, but there is something innocent about them, something pure. Seeing something as innocuous as a lizard or a moth one hundred times its normal size and being terrifying is the nightmare of children, the fears you have when normal life concerns can’t even compute in your mind. Del Toro is the perfect director to take that type of story and make it gratifying on the largest scale.

This is, no doubt, the first of many gleeful Pacific Rim updates from us here at The Flickcast, stay tuned.

The ‘RoboCop’ Remake Adds A Couple Solid Names To The Cast

The impending RoboCop remake is in an odd place. It is the perfect kind of pulpy, popular franchise that should be remade, but the original holds such a specific and dear place in the hearts of fans that it is up against a lot of fan distrust.

One way they can help assuage fan worries is to cast the film well. That is well underway as recently the movie has added the always game Samuel L. Jackson to play a prominent TV figure in the film. Those familiar with the original RoboCop know that Paul Verhoven used TV as a great source of satire that helped give the film it’s edge.

Bringing in a man like Sam Jackson for a role like that seems to infer that this new film might not stray that far from one of the originals most iconic aspects. Jackson also joins previously cast Gary Oldman has the geek cred for the film, as both have been very good in numerous geek level properties.

In addition to the Jackson casting, Deadline is also reporting that the female lead has been found, Abbie Cornish. The lovely Ms. Cornish is playing RoboCop’s wife, who believes herself to be a widow once Murphy gets all robo-fied. This could be a very interesting direction the film can take, as Murphy’s wife had been little more than window dressing in the first film. By describing the character as a female lead it is clear we will see much more of that awkward relationship status. It’s complicated indeed.

Stay tuned for more updates on this every increasingly interesting remake here on The Flickcast.

What Will Apple Announce at Monday’s WWDC 2012 Keynote?

With Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference set for next week, anticipation is building as to what the company will announce during its keynote presentation on Monday. We, of course, have our suspicions. . . and don’t mind sharing them.

Here’s what we think will happen:

iOS 6 — This is pretty much a no-brainer. It’s a developer conference, after all, so an announcement of new software to power the next generation of iPhone and iPad is to be expected. In addition to new notifications and tighter integration with Facebook and Twitter, we’ve got our fingers crossed for Android-like widgets — but that’s probably a longshot. Also expect mention and demos of Mac OS X Mountain Lion too.

New MacBook Pros — The current lineup of MacBook Pro computers is in dire need of a refresh. What better place to announce thinner, faster pro laptops than at WWDC?

Apple TV — This is a bit more of a longshot. However, we think Apple wants to get into your living room in a big way, so look for an Apple-branded TV or more powerful/amazing Apple TV black box to be unveiled. We don’t necessarily believe Apple will go all the way and offer an actual TV, but stranger things have happened.

First Pic of The Governor from ‘The Walking Dead’ Is Some Guy We Don’t Recognize

Okay, to be fair, I know The Walking Dead is a television adaptation of a comic book. I also know TV has different demands and often shows don’t stay completely true to their source material. Anyone who’s read the Walking Dead comics knows the series has deviated in several significant ways. And that’s part of the deal.

However, when you have an actual visual guide as to what a very popular character is supposed to look like, it’s not too much to expect that it might be followed. Case in point is the release of what is being called the first picture of the Governor from next season’s The Walking Dead.

I’m not going to say any more and just let you look at the two pictures above and tell me if those look like the same character to you. Yeah, me either. It’s weird, they did a very good job with Michonne too.

This is what happens when you get greedy and fire your showrunner after the first season. Or, let’s hope this is just some sort of flashback and the real Governor actually makes an appearance.

New Production Video for ‘The Hobbit’ Arrives

It’s not a secret that The Hobbit is one of the most anticipated films coming out this year. While we wait for it to be relased Peter Jackson and company have been kind enough to share some making of and behind the scenes videos with us.

A new one has arrived and it’s pretty cool. This one is a tour of the New Zealand sets where the movie is being made and shows some of the actors at work.

This is another in a series of videos that helps people understand all that goes into the making of giant spectacles like Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. Let’s hope it helps build the appreciation for all the work that goes into them and all the people, especially those not in the spotlight, who do that work.

Check out the video after the break.

E3 2012: ‘Skylanders Giants’ Reveals Their ‘Tall Tales’ Trailer

When Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure came out, Activision was likely hoping to cash in on the name recognition of Spyro to get their product off the ground. Now, not even a full year since the game came out, this E3 trailer shows that they know that Spyro is no driving force behind their game and that the Skylanders franchise has taken on a life of its own with the last game’s title character not even appearing in this new story trailer for Skylanders Giants.

In this trailer, both new and old characters are given distinct voices and personalities as they discuss the myths about the Giants that will become the focus of Skylanders Giants this fall. What is most interesting is that the trailer specifically says, “Over 40 new characters”. This is a much higher number than originally announced which had stated only eight new Skylanders and eight Giants would be coming to the new title. This may have been prompted by Activision’s announcement that Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure and the figures were such a huge seller since its release.

Take a peek after the jump at the latest story trailer for Skylanders Giants and let us know your thoughts.

E3 2012: ‘LocoCycle’ Trailer from Twisted Pixel

If you follow The Flickcast, you know we have always been fans of TwistedPixel and their games since the first time we met the guys at Comic-Con in 2009. Since, they have given us ‘Splosion Man, Comic Jumper, Ms. ‘Splosion Man (which I actually jokingly predicted from a press release) and their first full retail game, the Gunstringer for Kinect.

So when we heard they were acquired by Microsoft, we were hoping they’d be allowed to continue doing what they do best, unlike Rare which became the prime driving force behind avatars. Luckily, from the look of the new LocoCycle trailer which was revealed during Microsoft’s E3 Press Conference (and can be seen below), it looks like Microsoft is keeping the avatars far away from TwistedPixel.

In the trailer, there is a sleek, almost Tron-like cycle being slowly revealed while a voiceover talks about a trailed and seemingly unstoppable female assassin. The big reveal, it looks like the bike is the assassin.

How this will play out in the game, we have no idea yet but with TwistedPixel behind the helm, we can’t wait to find out. Take a peek below at the trailer and give your thoughts.

With that in mind, we bring you the new, extended trailer for the CW’s upcoming Green Arrow TV series called, appropriately enough, Arrow.

When last we brought you news of this show we had a bit of a sneak peek for it. This time around we’ve got a lot more. This time the video is almost four minutes of action, romance and series star Stephen Amell without a shirt.

Hey, you gotta appeal to the ladies too, right? Anyway, check out the trailer after the break.
