Movie Review: ‘Get On Up’

gou1

Get On Up does two things magnificently well, and they’re related: It conveys the batshit craziness of both James Brown and Little Richard, which is quite a feat and aided in no small part from Chadwick Boseman as Brown and Brandon Mychal Smith as Richard. The two give performances so captivating that it’s worth seeing the film simply to indulge in their fascinating performances.

That Get On Up would be well acted is probably no surprise, but it is a surprise that they can almost carry the entire 138-minute film. Almost. And that the music is phenomenal shouldn’t be a surprise either. I’m not sure if Boseman performed all the songs, but I’m fairly certain he did his own dancing, and both are wisely indulgent, wisely for this film, which at least does know how to put on a show.

Director Tate Taylor (The Help) and writers Jez and John-Henry Butterworth nail many of the character moments, but never quite get around to understanding their subject. The first thirty minutes or so jumps back and forth through so many different periods that if there’s a linear story buried in there, I missed it. Even more, if there’s something that “made” Brown the man he became, the film doesn’t seem very interested in it, which would be fine, but it does need some kind of connecting thread to tie the movie together.

Movie Review: ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Freaks Out in a Moonage Daydream, Oh Yeah

gotg01

In 1977, at the age of 8, I sat in a theater and experienced the awe and wonder that was Star Wars. At the time, no one had any idea what kind of cultural significance it would have or what it would mean for cinema in general and science-fiction films in particular. Though there have been many books, essays and college theses that have attempted to quantify and examine those impacts over the years, at age 8 I didn’t really care about such things.

If I’m being completely honest I should admit that I still don’t, I just remember sitting in the darkened theater being completely pulled into a new and completely realized new universe of awe and wonder and being completely captivated and immeasurably entertained by it. Thanks to James Gunn and Guardians of the Galaxy, that feeling has returned 37 years later.

The Flickcast Episode 255: Superman vs. Batman: Dawn of Apes Justice

gal-gadot-wonder-woman-1That’s right folks, it’s a brand new episode of The Flickcast. And just like last week, you thought nothing good was gonna happen this week. Wrong again.

On this week’s show, Chris and Joe discuss and debate the major announcements from Comic-Con in San Diego, including all the scoop on Marvel, DC and their respective movie franchises. They also manage to throw in a bit of comics and TV news/discussion too, just for the heck of it. Plus, we finally get our first look at Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. And yes, there’s also the usual “more.”

Picks this week include Chris’ pick of the TV series The Strain and Joe’s pick of the upcoming Simpsons / Family Guy crossover episode. Should be epic.

At the end of season two of Vikings, Ragnar (Travis Fimmel) took the title King of the Danes by force when he and those loyal to him defeated King Horik. Now Ragnar is set on conquering England and even France as the HISTORY series continues to serve up epic battle scenes for viewers.

In one of the most shocking announcements at San Diego Comic-Con 2014, the cast revealed a major character would die this season. They were quiet as to who would get the axe (literally, most likely) but teased a major battle in Paris. Season 3 is bringing Alexander Ludwig’s Bjorn Ironside into the battle even more as he joins his father and uncle, Rollo (Clive Standen), in claiming new lands. Ragnar and his brother are finally moving forward together after nursing a strained  relationship for much of the last season.

Click through for more, including a sneak peak at season 3. After the break.

SDCC14: ‘Skylanders Trap Team’

STT_DarkEdition_Gen_Contents_FINAL2_HiRes

At Comic-Con in San Diego we got the opportunity to take a closer look at the latest additions to Skylanders with Skylanders Trap Team. While we had already gotten a peek at the title, there were still some awesome announcements behind the game along with some great insight from the designers as well.

First came the announcement of the Skylanders Trap Team Dark Edition Starter Pack. Like last year’s SWAP Force Dark Edition, the set will come with some special dark paint variants of characters. Unlike last year’s though, there will be only three new Trap Team members without any sprinkling of classic characters.

It will also come with a new Portal of Power which will have a new feature in addition to a new look, the ability to use Traps to capture villains in game and use them while playing. The Dark Edition will come with a limited edition over sized trap allowing players to capture Chaos.

SDCC14: Fly Through Gotham City on the Zip Line Experience

Gotham Zip Line

If you’ve ever wanted to soar over Gotham like the Dark Knight, San Diego Comic-Con 2014 is making that dream come true. CW’s new series Gotham is inviting fans to take a ride down the zip line as the city’s skies fly past.

San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer kicked off the annual convention by taking the inaugural ride on the zip line. Fans flocked to follow after him because everyone secretly wants to be Batman. Almost more impressive than the zip line itself is the enormous outline of Gotham city, which perfectly erases all traces of sunny San Diego as you go zipping past.

If you’re down in San Diego, experience the zip line for yourself. It’s open Thursday through Sunday 10 am – 6 pm and is located between the Convention Center and the Hilton Bayfront Hotel.

Check out the zip line in action after the break.

Titan’s ‘Doctor Who’ Comics Materialize In Stores

Doctor-Who-Tenth-Doctor-1-Regular-Crop

After a brief hiatus Doctor Who returns this week to comic books stores, this time courtesy of Titan Comics. Doctor Who‘s history in comics is pretty much as storied as the Television version, starting a year after the show debuted. The long-running UK published Doctor Who Magazine has been running comic strips based on the show since 1979.

In the US, however, the Doctor didn’t see any four-color adventures until the mid-1980s with Marvel Comics reprinting some of the British strips. That was short-lived and it wasn’t until 2007 that an American published comic book was made available. Now the US gets the best of both worlds with Titan Comics being a British publisher, but with full distribution in the US. As if to reward us for our eternal patience this week sees the debut of two new Doctor Who comics with a third on the way soon. Here’s a look at the first two titles.
