The Flickcast Episode 246: Batfleck!

batfleck!

Today is Thursday and there’s a brand new episode of The Flickcast for you. Sorry it’s late. We couldn’t help it.

What do you want? We apologized, didn’t we. So give us a break. If you don’t like our schedule go and do your own podcast and then we can complain about how late it is, okay? Okay. Moving along …

On this week’s show Chris and Joe take on some new topics and revisit old ones, as usual. Some of these topics include the first picture of Ben Affleck as Batman, the death of H.R. Giger, the new 24, the underappreciated Dwayne Johnson, Edge of Tomorrow, Godzilla, season finales of their favorite TV series, and a whole lot more. There’s some other stuff in there too. It’s a pretty good episode, all things considered.

The guys also made picks this week. Chris’ pick is the movie Aliens (in honor of Mother’s Day) and Joe’s pick is the NBC series The Blacklist.

As always, if you have comments, questions, critiques, offers of sponsorship, or whatever, feel free to hit us up in the comments, on Twitter, at FacebookGoogle+ or via email.

Kinect-Free XBox One Coming in June

XBox One Kinect

Yesterday, Microsoft dropped what they were hoping would be a bomb, but has truthfully only ended up being a cause for more contention in the console war. After about six months of being outsold by the PlayStation 4, Microsoft has announced they will be releasing a Kinect-free version of the XBox One. Hitting shelves on June 9th, this will be just in time for the E3 frenzy and most likely hope to capitalize on new titles being announced at E3 bringing more popularity to the system. It will also drop the price to $399.

Instead of people being happy about the new lower price, the negative backlash came. Sony fanboys decried the move as desperation. While it can be said that Microsoft did need to do something to put the console on even ground with the PlayStation, it wouldn’t be an act of desperation.

Microsoft listened to the feedback and instead of dropping the price and losing money due to cost, they removed the big elephant in the room that was associated with that higher price point. Had they kept the Kinect and dropped the price or dropped the Kinect and lowered the price below the $399 mark before Sony had enacted any price drop at all on the PlayStation 4, that would have been an act of desperation.

‘Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist’ Tries to Capture Audience of ‘Mortal Kombat: Legacy’

Street Fighter Assassins Fist

Almost four years ago, a fan made Mortal Kombat short made its way online which lead to both a resurgence in interest in Mortal Kombat and eventually two seasons of Mortal Kombat: Legacy which lived on the Machinima YouTube channel. While there were some hiccups in the storytelling and even continuity between seasons, no one could argue that Machinima put major promotion behind the series and laud its success.

Now, in a world where you’ll seemingly never see Street Fighter vs. Mortal Kombat on consoles, MK’s age old nemesis finds its way too to the Machinima channel with Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist. Backed by Capcom and Honda (which still leaves one’s head reeling), Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist will debut on the Machinima channel on May 23rd. The narrative will follow series’ favorites Ken and Ryu in their training under their master Gōken before the events of the world warrior tournament come to pass.

As seen in the trailer, Akuma will also make his way into the series and will actually be played by the show’s creator Joey Ansah. In addition to living on the YouTube channel, Content Media says it will also bring it to TV, on-demand, DVD and Blu-ray.

The Damn, Dirty Apes Get Angry In the Latest ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ Trailer

dawn-of-apes-1

The apes are back and there’s gonna be trouble … Yes, we like songs. We also like movies where apes run amuck and kick a lot of ass. Fortunately, we won’t be disappointed with the upcoming Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. It’s got all that, and more.

In this sequel to 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Cloverfield director Matt Reeves brings us the beginnings of the war between man and ape. Our money is on the humans. We cheat.

Look for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes to drop on July 11. The trailer is after the break.

The Flickcast Episode 245: The Star Wars

Star-Wars-1

Today is Wednesday, so that means there’s a brand new episode of The Flickcast for you. And, like each one before it, this episode is pretty darn good. It also might be a bit controversial.

On this week’s show Chris and Joe take on some new topics and revisit old ones — as you might expect. But really, they pretty much spend most of their time talking about Star Wars and the new cast announced recently. They also spend some time discussing women, haters and their general dislike for people who whine. Yeah, this is gonna be good.

There’s also more, of course. And per usual, you won’t be able to handle it all.

The guys also made picks this week. If you want to know what they are, you’ll just have to listen. Don’t worry, it will be time well spent. Trust us.

As always, if you have comments, questions, critiques, offers of sponsorship, or whatever, feel free to hit us up in the comments, on Twitter, at FacebookGoogle+ or via email.

‘The Sheik’ Documentary Takes Fans Behind the Curtain of Wrestling’s Greatest Villain

The Sheik

It’s very easy to look at a personality like the Iron Sheik and make some flash judgments about him. Like many wrestlers from the seventies and eighties,  he wasn’t just a character to the audience. The Iron Sheik was everything he claimed to be. Going head to head with Hulk Hogan, the Iron Sheik helped usher in the era of Hulkamania. He would turn one of America’s heroes against it when he took the real life G.I. Joe, Sergeant Slaughter and made him an Iraqi sympathizer. But by being so hated, he lead a generation of wrestling fans through an emotional journey. But that is only half of his story.

The Sheik is a documentary that debuted last month at the Hot Docs International Film Festival in Toronto that helps fill in all the blanks and brings to light many things that most people who are even fans of the Sheik may not even be aware of. The one that stands out the most that you’ll see in the trailer below is that while he was America’s biggest foe in the ring, he was in fact living the American dream that he escaped Iran to fulfill. Created by Iranian-Canadian twins Page and Jian Magen and joined by commentary from the likes of the Rock, Jim Ross, Jake Roberts, Mick Foley and over 25 celebrities, the Sheik’s story unfolds for audiences as they see there is more to this man than four letter word filled Twitter rants and spitting on the USA.

Review: ‘Son of Batman’ – Bat Brat to the Rescue

son-of-batman-movie-review

At WonderCon 2014, fans crammed into the Arena to watch the world premiere of DC Universe’s latest animated feature, Son of Batman, and with good reason. The film, which is set to release on DVD and Blu-ray on May 6, delivers fun and adventure with a fresh plot based Grant Morrison’s 2006 DC storyline.

Bruce Wayne (Jason O’Mara) receives an unwelcome visit from his former lover and foe, Talia al Gul (Morena Baccarin), who’s brought with her a son Batman never knew he had. Damien (Stuart Allen) is exactly the type of kid you’d expect to come from these two: smart, strong, ruthless, and bloodthirsty. Bats, with some patience and an assist from Nightwing (Sean Maher), is able to get through to his long-lost son, and it’s not long before the arrogant kid is donning his own version of the Robin costume. He soars off alongside his father to take down criminal mastermind, Deathstroke (Thomas Gibson).

In keeping with its later animated features, DC does not hold back on the blood and gore of the battles. Damien, who is supposed about 10, takes quite a beating and there’s an especially cringe worthy part involving daggers. Still the action is very welcome and keeps the plot speeding ahead. One of my favorite sequences involved the new dynamic duo fighting off ninja man-bats, engineered by a kidnapped Dr. Langstrom (Xander Berkeley).
