Check Out a Preview for ‘Star Wars: Rebel Heist’ #1

SWRebelHeist1-crop

Even though we still have to wait a bit for new Star Wars movies to come out, that doesn’t mean we won’t get any great Star Wars stories in the meantime. Case in point today is Matt Kindt’s Star Wars: Rebel Heist from Dark Horse comics.

Here’s the deal:

A young Rebel meets one of the Alliance’s best for his first mission. But the young man’s hero worship is crushed by the reality of Han Solo. A botched escape, a ship that doesn’t work—could it be that Solo is just a lucky bumbler whose luck has run out?

Probably not. He seems pretty resourceful. Still, better read the new series just to make sure.

Check out the preview after the break. Look for Star Wars: Rebel Heist in comic shops on April 30.

Loot Crate Wars: ‘Attack on Titanfall’

Attack on Titanfall

After the debacle of last month’s Warriors Loot Crate War, I took matters into my own hands. I picked the game and also watched over WallE’s shoulder while he was editing. If I was going to lose this Loot Crate War I would be doing it on my own terms. While the whole problem could be easily solved by ordering a second Loot Crate to Whiskey & Waffles HQ, there’s just really no fun in sharing.

This month, Loot Crate’s theme is Titan, or more specifically Attack on Titanfall. A mashup box of two popular Titan titled properties with Attack on Titan, a manga/anime/game, and Titanfall which is pretty much the most talked about game out so far on the XBox One. While keeping it spoiler free, I will say the items in this crate were definitely the most focused on a topic thus far and would really be appreciated by fans of one of or both series. That said, if neither of the two appealed to you this month probably wasn’t a month you were clamouring for although they do a great job of giving an introduction to one of the series *hint hint*

Initial Reactions to the Amazon Fire TV

fire-tv-box-1

As we told you before, Amazon has come out with its own version of the Apple TV or Roku. It’s called the Fire TV and it’s an Android-powered black box that allows you to stream content from various sources including Amazon Prime, Hulu Plus and Netflix.

But is it any good? Well, our own Chris Ullrich decided to take it for a spin and made his initial report over at his personal site. As with other times he’s done this in the past, we’re still not sure why he doesn’t just write his review, or whatever, here.

Whatever, he’s the boss. Anyway, check out his thoughts and if you end up getting a Fire TV for yourself, let us know what you think of it in the comments.

The Flickcast Episode 240: Never Say Never

never-say-never-again

That whole “getting back on track” thing we were harping about a couple weeks ago? Yeah, that didn’t work out so well. We’re trying, believe us.

But sometimes, things don’t work out as planned. Until, of course, they do. That’s right, here’s a brand new episode of The Flickcast for your listening pleasure.

As usual, this week Chris and Joe take on some new topics and some old ones. Some of these include new trailers for The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, X-Men: Days of Future Past, more casting news from the world of movies and TV, The Walking Dead finale, the awesomeness of Magnum, P.I. and a whole lot more.

Just listen. You’ll enjoy it.

This week’s picks include Chris’ pick of the HBO series Game of Thrones and Joe’s pick of the bittorrent software BitTorrent Sync for Mac, PC, iOS and Android.

As always, if you have comments, questions, critiques, offers of sponsorship, or whatever, feel free to hit us up in the comments, on Twitter, at FacebookGoogle+ or via email.

Amazon Announces the Fire TV

Amazon-Fire-TV-1

In a bid to compete with devices like the Google Chromecast, Roku and mainly the Apple TV, Amazon today announced the Amazon Fire TV. According to chairman Jeff Bezos, the Fire TV “is a tiny box that plugs into your HDTV. It’s the easiest way to enjoy Netflix, Prime Instant Video, Hulu Plus, WatchESPN, low-cost video rentals, and more. With instant access to over 200,000 TV episodes and movies, plus all your favorite subscriptions and streaming services, you can watch what you want, when you want.”

In addition, if you’re a Prime member “you get unlimited access to thousands of popular movies and TV shows, including exclusives like Downton Abbey, The Americans, Alpha House, and Under the Dome.” All in 1080p, of course.

Bu wait, there’s even more. “Fire TV has voice search that actually works. The old way of searching with a TV remote—scrolling and clicking one letter at a time on an alphabet grid—is painful. With Fire TV you simply speak the title, actor, or genre into the remote and you’re done.”

The internal specs of the Fire TV are impressive as well. The device features a quad-core processor, dedicated GPU, 2 GB of memory, and dual-band, dual-antenna Wi-Fi. It also features a new buffering system which will supposedly help eliminate any streaming lag. Of course, your mileage may vary.

The device also plays games. Titles at launch include Minecraft, The Walking Dead, Monsters University, the Amazon exclusive Sev Zero, and many other free games available to Prime Members.

The Amazon Fire TV is $99.00 and ships today. The optional game controller will set you back another $39.99.

The Story Behind ‘Flappy Bird’ from the Team at LORE

Flappy Bird Lore

With over 200 videos, the team at LORE have helped fill in the blanks in stories of many games that would either take hours upon hours of gameplay, interpretation of in game events or a keen attention to detail and almost neurotic level of completionism to get to. Their two shows Lore In a Minute and Fast Facts have covered classic titles, new releases, franchises and even various developers and hardware manufacturers. These explorations are increasingly useful for titles that have a loose in game narrative with hordes of supplemental material like Team Fortress or Left 4 Dead to fill in the tons of backstory that most players wouldn’t take the time to research.

In some cases though, LORE just goes off and does whatever the heck they want since some games literally have no story other than move to the right. That’s where Flappy Bird LORE comes into play. With nothing but the idea of tapping a screen and the pipes of Flappy Bird, the LORE team came up with a whole mythos behind the now defunct and infamous title. It’s likely the creator will never tell his true inspiration behind the game and the 80,000,000 people who downloaded it will never hear its true intentions. But, LORE did a heck of a job hypothesizing on it.

Monday Freeview: ‘Marvel Puzzle Quest: Dark Reign’

Marvel Puzzle Quest Dark Reign

After a small hiatus, the Monday Freeview is back bringing you the best and worst of free entertainment in all shapes, forms and sizes. Today we look at the mobile app, Marvel Puzzle Quest: Dark Reign. First off, thanks for staying timely Marvel.

Dark Reign as a status quo happened between 2008 to 2009. But since it has been plastered in every Marvel book over the past month, I figured it was worth a shot and gave it a download. As you might have guessed from the name, the Marvel universe is put into the gem matching world of Puzzle Quest though there are some dramatic differences due to the game’s free to play nature.

Puzzle Quest focuses on playing out combat scenarios using the Bejeweled method of lining up three, four or five gems of the same color in a row. In Puzzle Quest, these combinations deal damage according to the player’s choice in character. The gems also tally up and can be cashed in by the player for various attacks, again determined by who the characters on the board are. Each side can have up to three characters and wins when the other side is knocked out. After a match, experience in the form of ISO’s is distributed and various unlockables can be won as well, encouraging a player to repeat the same battle multiple times.
