helix-jeri-ryan-1

If you haven’t been watching Helix on Syfy, you’re missing out. Over the course of its first seven episodes it’s become one of our “must watch” shows of the season.

With a brand new episode dropping tonight, we’ve got previews of it for you to get you ready. This is what it’s about:

It’s Day Eight. As Daniel gets closer to the truth about his past, Sutton wreaks havoc on the base. Yeah, she kinda does. But that’s okay because she looks great doing it.

Oh didn’t we mention who Sutton is played by? None other than Jeri Ryan. That’s her in the pic above.

Check out the previews after the break. Helix airs tonight at 10/9C on Syfy.

IDW Launches ‘Kill Shakespeare’ Board Game on Kickstarter

kill-shakespeare

Friends, Shakespeareans, gamers, lend me your ears! IDW Games has launched a Kickstarter campaign for a Kill Shakespeare board game, based on the graphic novel series.

With a goal of $25,000, Kill Shakespeare is the first joint venture between IDW Games and Pandasaurus Games. The campaign includes perks such as lithographs, posters, custom dice and of course the game itself, at a deeply discounted rate. Stretch goals are also in place to expand game content to include additional characters and quests.

The game itself is a semi-cooperative board game where players are one of Shakespeare’s heroes battling against his villains while completing quests from the Bard himself.

TV RECAP: ‘The Walking Dead’ Episode 410: ‘Inmates’

Walking Dead 410 Pic

This week’s episode almost plays in Pulp Fiction style (or as I am more familiar with, the Simpsons episode titled ’22 Short Films About Springfield’).  We see what has happened to everyone other than Rick, Carl, and Michonne (since we found out their fates last week).  One group will walk by a spot and notice something, and then we’ll see a different group having gone that way earlier, causing what we’ve already seen.

It’s difficult to describe without specific details, so hopefully my review will unmuddy the waters for those who I’ve totally confused above.  It starts with Beth and Daryl running through the woods.  Beth is narrating the scene with passages from a diary she started at some point.

Beth and Daryl are resting, but Beth is intent on doing something.  She wants Daryl to track, because he’s a tracker.  Daryl is just sitting there saying nothing.  Beth goes off on her own, and Daryl begrudgingly follows her.  She is convinced everyone is ok, and Daryl is not so bright eyed.

Beth finds some footprints, which she takes as a sign that “they” are alive.  Daryl only confirms that they were alive four or five hours ago.  Daryl sees some trampled grapes, and determines that the people that were there got scared and took off in a hurry.  They find an open area with a bunch of dead walkers.  Beth takes this as a sign that the people survived, but Daryl points out blood on a bush that is not from a walker.

‘Titanfall’ Beta? Or ‘Titanfall’ Pre-Release Promo Demo?

titanfall-hd-wallpaper

These kids today have it too easy. Back in our day there were certain aspects of being a gamer you just had to deal with. Polygons could be maxed out on screen. You’d have to use your imagination to see what the little collection of blocks represented. And one thing we all knew was that if you made it into the beta testing phase of a game, things were bound to be broken. But that was to be expected. A beta wasn’t a finished product and you “paid” for the early gameplay by dealing with the bugs. Kids today don’t get betas. They just get an extended demo and that’s why they don’t know the pain we went through growing up.

What brought on this jaded old man tirade you ask? The Titanfall beta of course. Don’t misinterpret, there is nothing wrong with the Titanfall beta. Between the beta and the awesome art book I got today (don’t worry, a review is coming soon), I am going to be picking up Titanfall on launch. But when playing it, it hasn’t been a beta experience. The game runs smooth, controls great and looks fantastic. The only limits are some of the maps and weapons not being fully unlocked. It’s basically a smaller version of the final product. And that’s not a beta. It’s a demo. But they’ve changed the name because beta access is a better buzz phrase for marketing.

Check Out a Preview for ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ Season 10 #1

buffy-season-10-comic

There’s no doubt Joss Whedon has had a profound impact on the geek landscape. One of his first TV shows, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, proved genre programming could be a hit with audiences and spawned a cult following that endures to this day, even thought the show itself went off the air in 2003.

Fortunately, the adventures of Buffy and company have continued, at least in the pages of comics. Dark Horse took up the challenge and released Buffy Season 8 starting in 2008. Now, they’re about to release Season 10.

Of course, we’ve got previews. Here’s more about the season:

New season. New rules. The age-old battle of Slayer vs. vampire is the focus of Buffy’s life once again—it’s downright nostalgic! But with all the toying with magic she’s done lately, this girl should know it’s time for another game change . . . Shouldn’t she?

Look for Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 10, written by Christos Gage with art by Rebekah Isaacs, to arrive in stores on March 19. Check out the preview after the break.

New Transformers Game Combines G1 and Bay-verse Worlds

TransformersAnnounce_Logo

Part of what we loved most about the High Moon Studios entry into the Transformers world is that it was the original G1 canon most of us had fallen in love with during our childhood. Wanted to know what happened before Optimus and the crew made it to earth, you got the story finally from Transformers: War for Cybertron and Transformers: Fall of Cybertron. But Activision has gone and done something that is not only unexpected but for some of the most hardcore of Transformers G1 fans… unwelcomed.

Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark will be a part of the G1 Universe but it will also be a part of the Michael Bay movieverse as well, with events taking place before Transformers Age of Extinction. That means that they are doing what could be the absolute worst offense when it comes to G1 territory by combining it with whatever Michael Bay is throwing at the wall this time.

A lot of people say I am too harsh when it comes to the Michael Bay films but after the first one, it just kept getting farther and farther away from the franchise I grew up on into a poorly put together film with sophomoric level comedy forced into it. In Transformers: Fall of Cybertron, we got Grimlock and the rest of his dinobot compatriots but now that could all be washed away because of the new Michael Bayified Grimlock that we were introduced to during the Super Bowl trailer.

Discovering ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’

2014-02- Discovering 'The Hobbit-An Unexpected Journey' 1

Following the release of 2003’s The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King – a movie that took me a full decade later to actually sit down and watch (told you I’m slow) – Peter Jackson had seemingly done the impossible: bringing J.R.R. Tolkien’s famed series to life on the big screen…and made it amazing. So amazing in fact that I was determined not to let another decade pass before I got to watch The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

What did I find? More of the same; and I couldn’t be happier for it (you can go here for an in-depth review by our own Nat Almirall). Sure, the length of the movie is every bit as ridiculous as the original trilogy, but if you know that going in there’s really no point in complaining about it. Instead, I focused on what made me love that first offering so much: colorful characters, gorgeous settings and an adventure that could easily stand in as a double for the definition of “epic.”

Many of the same stars and characters make appearances in Hobbit, so there’s practically no chance of unfamiliarity with the viewer…unless this is their first foray into Tolkien’s universe. And unless they have an aversion to fantasy – at which point I’d ask why they’re watching something like this in the first place – they’ll still have a great experience watching a younger Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman in his usual twitchiness) and his new band of brothers come together for the greater good.
