*Note: this column was written on Sunday, so four-day totals that include Monday’s receipts will differ from these numbers.
It was no surprise that The Twilight Saga: Eclipse dominated the weekend box office. The film made $69 Million over the weekend. Add in a record breaking $30M midnight take on Tuesday night, and Wednesday and Thursday’s totals, and the movie has made $161 Million as of today.
It did fall short of breaking the all-time opening day record set by its predecessor New Moon, which made $72 Million on its opening day. Eclipse came awfully close, making about $68.5 in the same time frame. At any rate, Eclipse recouped its budget of $69 Million in one day.
We can expect the film to drop off quite a bit in upcoming weeks, as the series historically has been very front loaded, but this film does seem to be getting good word of mouth, so the drop off might not be as steep.
The Last Airbender did a lot better than I expected it to. Obviously the built in fan base helped elevate the critically reviled film to an okay opening weekend. Airbender made $40 Million over the weekend, but since it opened on Thursday, its total is now $56 Million.
That’s still a long way from its $150 Million budget, though, and word of mouth has been brutal, so the movie may fall off considerably after this weekend. If so, it will be a disaster for Paramount, which has sunk about $280M into the film between the budget and marketing. It also leaves the future of the franchise, and the career of director M. Night Shyamalan hanging in the balance.
Toy Story 3 is still going strong in its third week in release, making another $30 Million. This brings its total to $289 Million. Finding Nemo is Pixar’s highest grossing movie of all time, with $339 Million in ticket sales. It is looking highly likely that Toy Story 3 will exceed that during its theatrical run.

C-Net News recently reported that the FBI has made an arrest in the case of the work-print of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, that was leaked and available for download a month before the movie was to be released theatrically. There apparently was nothing saying whether Gilberto Sanchez, 47, the man arrested, was responsible for the initial upload of the film, or how he might have acquired a copy to upload.
FBI Spokesperson Linda Eimiller said that the Bureau has not ruled out the possibility of more arrests, but didn’t comment further. If convicted, Sanchez could face up to three years in prison and/or a $250,000 fine.
The workprint that was released, as most will remember, was an unfinished version of the movie with wires still shown on performers and unfinished, or not-yet inserted effects. By the time Wolverine was released in theaters, it had been estimated that the pirated version had been downloaded over 4 million times. This didn’t seem to hurt the box office too badly, as it still opened to a nice $85 Million domestically and has earned nearly $375 Million since it’s release in May.

Coming off of the huge Twilight Saga success during last week’s MTV Movie Awards, Cam Gigandet, who plays James, the vampire baddie in the first film, has just been cast as yet another vampire.
This time, it will be in a Screen Gems film adaptation of the comic book Priest. From The Hollywood Reporter:
Gigandet will star opposite Paul Bettany in “Priest,” a horror Western that Scott Stewart is directing for Screen Gems. Adapted by Cory Goodman from a TokyoPop comic book, “Priest” is set in a world ravaged by centuries of war between man and vampires and follows a warrior priest (Bettany) who turns against the church to track down a murderous band of vampires who have kidnapped his niece. Gigandet plays a young wasteland sheriff who is part vampire. He partners with Bettany to save the girl he loves, the niece. That latter part has yet to be cast.
Gigandet won an MTV Movie Award for his fight sequence with Robert Pattinson’s Edward in Twilight, and also won the previous year for his fight in the film Never Back Down, making him the first actor to win the award two years in a row.
The young actor can next be seen starring opposite Jenna Malone in the drama Five Star Day and opposite Ben Foster and Dennis Quaid in the Sci-Fi Horror Pandorum.
UPDATE – Apparently, according to a new interview at MTV Splashpage, Cam won’t exactly be playing a vampire in the new film. However, he is in the movie and it does contain “vampire-like” creatures. Draw your own conclusions from the interview posted after the jump.

Earlier, we brought you a sneak peek at the first trailer for The Twilight Saga: New Moon. Now, thanks to the folks over at Trailer Addict, we’re able to bring you the entire thing to help fulfill all your tween vampire warewolf love triangle needs.
Those of you familiar with the Twilight story need no explanation as to what’s happening in the trailer. For those of you just joining us, the sequel to Twilight follows the tortured and troubled love affair between the vampire Edward and the human Bella. In this film, things start to go very bad and Edward leaves Bella in order to protect her from his potential blood lust. This, of course, leaves her vulnerable to other vampires.
Luckily, as it turns out she’s got a pack of werewolves to protect her, led by her close friend and third member of the troubled tween triangle, Jacob Black. You just know Edward isn’t going to like that. Check out the full trailer after the jump.
The Twilight Saga: New Moon opens November 20th. As if you didn’t already have that date circled on your calendar.

The results are in and sadly, not everyone goes home with an award. But they do probably all go home in some sort of limo — or a hybrid because stars love to be politically correct. Still, even though some people had to lose, the 2009 MTV Movie Awards was a night filled with fun, celebs and lots of great clips from movies past, present and future.
Some of the highly anticipated new movies viewers got a glimpse of during the show included The Twilight Saga: New Moon, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra and Public Enemies. There were also the usual movie parodies and comedic bits featuring host Andy Samberg and a multitude of guest including Taylor Swift, Justin Timberlake, Sacha Baron Cohen as Bruno and a rather angry Eminem who proved he has no sense of humor by storming off the stage after a close encounter with a face down Bruno who had landed in his lap.
Twilight and its cast were the big winners, taking home 5 awards, with High School Musical 3: Senior Year and its stars in second with 2. Finally, Heath Ledger posthumously won the award for ‘Best Villain’ for his performance in The Dark Knight. Not a surprise but still, a fitting final tribute to an actor, and a human being, who died far too young.
See a list of all the big winners after the break:
