Neil Gaiman Promises Scarier Cybermen in his Second ‘Doctor Who’ Episode

DOCTOR WHO SERIES 7B EPISODE 7

Neil Gaiman is a geek god. He’s the author of several award winning books and comics including the series The Sandman and novel American Gods. He’s a Doctor Who fan and if he could’ve traveled with any incarnation of the Doctor, it would’ve been Patrick Troughton’s Second Doctor.

Doctor Who was the first mythology that I ever knew,” he said.

Tonight Gaiman returns with Nightmare in Silver, the second episode he’s penned for the BBC America show about all of time and space. In Nightmare, the Doctor, Clara (Jenna Louise-Coleman), Artie and Angie arrive at Hedgewick’s World of Worlds, once the greatest theme park in the galaxy but now home to strange creatures and a terrifying new breed of Cybermen.

The Cybermen are not only one of the Doctor’s greatest enemies but one of Gaiman’s greatest passions. His first Doctor Who experience was seeing the fourth season episode, Moonbase, as a child. Swift and silent Cybermen were at the center of the episode and those villains stuck with Gaiman.

Movie Review: ‘The Great Gatsby’

FL01_010.jpg

I don’t know if it’s the strength of Fitzgerald’s novel or Luhrman’s good understanding of it, but this is a far better adaptation than I was expecting.

In case you weren’t in an American high school, The Great Gatsby follows Nick Carraway (played here by Tobey Maguire), a bond trader moved to New York from the Midwest. He purchases a small house in West Egg, a suburb of New York City, and lives across the bay from his cousin Daisy Buchanan (Carey Mulligan) and her husband, Nick’s college friend, Tom Buchanan (Joel Edgerton). Nick’s neighbor is the mysterious Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio), a playboy who’d be notable for the monstrous parties he throws each weekend were it not for the cryptic means through which he funds them.

Nick attends one of Gatsby’s parties, swept up with intrigue and confusion about his host — hearing rumors of his relation to the Kaiser; tales of his work as a spy; whispers of his past at Oxford — many of them from his new acquaintance Jordan Baker (Elizabeth Debicki), female golfer and social gossipista.

Eventually he runs into Gatsby, who appears at Gershwin’s moment of climax during Rhapsody in Blue. The two stir a friendship and small details of Gatsby’s history begin to drip out. He came from a wealthy family. He’s a hero of World War I. He’s…story after story. And, years ago, he was desperately in love with Daisy. But the war and school and other things kept them apart, leaving Tom to claim her. Gatsby’s convinced that, given some time with his lost love, he could convince her to leave her husband and marry him. It’s a solid plan, especially seeing as how Tom is not particularly discreet about his own affairs. But buried beneath this romance is…

Comics: Blackout to Debut In Dark Horse’s Upcoming ‘Dark Horse Presents’ #24

dark-horse-presents-blackout-crop

We figure Marvel and DC get enough coverage, so we mostly try to bring you news from the smaller, more indie publishers. This time around that’s Dark Horse and their upcoming book Dark Horse Presents #24.

This issue is special for many reasons, but the one were most interested in today is the debut of a brand new superhero in the Dark Horse universe: Blackout.

In Blackout, “the commonplace life of Scott Travers changes forever when he comes to possess an extraordinary piece of technology that allows him to access a mysterious dimension within our own.” Okay, that’s good so far. But wait, there’s more.

Blackout writer Frank Barbiere says, “Blackout has a very fun sci-fi/mystery mythology that comes straight from DH Publisher Mike Richardson, and I think readers will be surprised and intrigued by what we have in store for them! Working with artist Micah Kaneshiro is a delight, and I look forward to bringing our story to DHP.”

Catch Blackout appearing in Dark Horse Presents #24, on sale May 22. Check out the full cover after the break.

No two ways about it, this movie looks pretty cool. And speaking of the number two, we’ve got two, count ’em, two trailers from it to share with you today so you know just how cool it is.

Set in Viking Britain in 871 AD, Hammer of the Gods is “a visceral, intense tale set in a world whose only language is violence. Steinar’s epic journey across terrifyingly hostile territory gradually sees him emerge as the man his father wants him to be – the ruthless and unforgiving successor to his throne.” See what we mean?

gravity-clooney-1

In space, people can hear you scream. That’s especially true if the “you” in this scenario is Sandra Bullock and you’re with George Clooney in space and your shuttle has just been destroyed. Yeah, that would suck.

Fortunately, it’s just a movie. . . for now. Said movie in question is Gravity, director Alfonso Curon’s followup to Children of Men. Some footage screened for folks at CinemaCon recently, and now it’s being released for all.

Check it out after the break. Look for Gravity to arrive in theaters on October 4.
