Movie Review: ‘Bullet to the Head’

bh

Walter Hill and Sylvester Stallone? I’m in. Walter Hill and Louisiana? Double in. Christian Slater and Mr. Eko as the bad guys and explosions and huge flailing boobies? This is already the best movie of the year.

What’s there to say? Stallone is Jimmy Bobo, a Louisiana-based hitman whose latest job goes south after his partner is taken out. If that’s not enough, the former partner of their target (Sung Kang) heads down to the bayou to find out who set up the hit.

After a brief ruckus in the parking garage, the two team up despite a mutual dislike. The investigation uncovers a web of corruption that apparently everyone in New Orleans is in on, from the jazz bands prowling the filthy streets to the cultural elite, ably represented by Marcus Baptiste (Christian Slater) and Morel (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje).

Add to that Stallone’s incredibly sexy daughter (Sarah Shahi) — the tattoo artist who can kick some tail on her own, an angry, knife-wielding henchman, and exploding houses, and you have the plot of the movie.

Movie Review: ‘Warm Bodies’

wb

Is this a parody or a ripoff? Warm Bodies is so up front with its copies — copies– of Twilight that, judging from the trailer alone, by the time it hit theatres, I was sure it had to be a straight-up uppercut to tweener romance. I’m not so sure now.

But I am certain that the leads, Nicholas Hoult and Teresa Palmer, were chosen for their resemblances to Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart (respectively, I think), both in looks and in their mutual tendency to overact. The story, however, is lifted from Romeo and Juliet and Zombies — and at least anyone who has yet to take freshman literature should be able to make the connection between Juliet and Julie (Palmer) and R (Hoult) and Romeo. That gets a pass though, since Shakespeare probably stole the story from somewhere else.

Anywho, Julie and R live in your standard zombie apocalypse. A big wall separates the humans from the Corpses (as they’re so called). And there’s a special subset of Corpses called “Bonies” (feel free to giggle like a high-school freshman who has yet to read Romeo and Juliet yet) — these are the folks who’ve decomposed to the point of full-on skeletalization. Somehow they’re still able to move and sniff, but there’s more than a few suspensions of disbelief.

TV Recap: ‘Arrow’ Episode 112 – ‘Vertigo’

Stephen-Amell-Arrow-Vertigo

This episode of Arrow begins with The Hood chasing a drug dealer through a building. When he catches the man, he demands to know the supplier of Vertigo. The dealer tells him that the man is known as The Count.

At Thea’s hearing, her lawyer tells the judge that they have worked out a plea bargain for probation. The judge denies the plea bargain, wanting to make an example of Thea, and the poster child for what can happen if you are caught with Vertigo.

Oliver goes to talk to a Vice officer, and it turns out to be an old female friend from his crazier years, McKenna Hall. She shows him what little information they have on The Count.

In a back room of an old building, The Count confronts the dealer that sold him out to The Hood. He injects the dealer with liquid Vertigo right into his veins, which causes an unbearable sensation of pain. The Count gives him a gun with one bullet in, and the choice to shoot him or kill himself. The man kills himself.

Check This Out: Previews for History Channel’s New Show ‘Vikings’

vikings-history-channel-1

Looks like Hostory Channel is trying to capture a bit of that Game of Thrones and Spartacus magic that HBO and Starz have. In truth, we don’t mind because their upcoming show, Vikings, actually looks pretty good.

We’ve got a few preview clips from the show to share with you today. In them you’ll get “a taste of the intense drama” the show will bring. The next two previews introduce some of the main characters: “the warrior shield maiden, Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) and the ruler, Earl (Gabriel Byrne). One, fighting for what she believes and the other fighting to hold onto the power he can’t stand to lose.”

The last clip is, well, you’ll just have to watch it. Vikings premieres 3.3.13 @ 10/9c on History Channel.

TV Recap: ‘The Following’ Episode 102 – ‘Chapter Two’

the_following-chapter2-kevin-bacon

Prison guard Jordy comes up to a girl at a sorority house, saying that he’d like to secure their doors and windows as a precaution, even if Carroll was already caught. She lets him in, and he suggests that they start in a room at the end of the hallway.

Jordy tells the girl he has studied the house a lot, and pulls out a bag that he threw up there earlier. He calls it his “kit”, and says that it is important to have the right tools. He has been planning this for a long time, and lunges at the girl.

Denise (real name Emma Hill) and the two “gay” neighbors (real names Jacob Wells and Paul Torres) arrive at a house with Claire’s son Joey. She has told Joey that they are on an adventure, and his mother said not to call her.

Hardy is introduced to agent Deborah Parker, the new lead in the investigation. The old lead has been moved off the case for leaving Hardy alone with Carroll in the interrogation room, which led to Hardy breaking three of Carroll’s fingers.

Parker is questioning Hardy about his past when they are informed that there has been another murder. They arrive at the sorority house to find that 3 girls have been killed. The killer was very sloppy, and they are able to determine that is was Jordy based on all the fingerprints.

Interview with Artist “Average” Joe Romero

Average Joe Art Cover ImageI was never blessed with the gift of artistic ability. The extent of my ability was doodling in the margins of my notebooks during classes, or adding a mustache and glasses (and perhaps some devil horns) to a photograph in a magazine. Whether it was a poster, a comic book, or a tattoo I’ve always been fascinated with art and those that can make a living through it.

Around the time of WrestleMania 27, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin appeared on television with a brand new t-shirt designed by artist Joe Romero. I quickly found his online presence, Average Joe Art, and began following him on Twitter. Ever since then Joe has been pumping out great, pop culture-inspired illustrations. From Breaking Bad, to Walking Dead, to The Avengers Joe has added to his catalogue of comic-style homages to geeky T.V & film favorites.

You Will Fall For This New ‘Iron Man 3’ Poster

ironman3postbannerThe Marvel Cinematic Universe is entering into untested grounds. While the first phase of films was groundbreaking in its structure, it still had the familiar grasp of forward momentum. Like a wave crashing onto the beach, the momentum is beginning to recede as Marvel gears up for their next big push.

So it falls on the capable shoulders of Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man to embrace the narrowing focus of the universe, while still setting in motion the momentum for the next phase of Marvel films. So considering the pressure this film is under, it makes sense that we are seeing an expanded presence from this film’s marketing as the Super Bowl approaches.

We do not have the new TV spot, or a full trailer just yet, but Marvel Studios has just released a beautiful new poster to stroke everyone’s  anticipation glands.

The poster itself is a simple image of Iron Man, or as simple of an image of Iron Man you can get when he is plummeting to his certain doom. A cheery one-sheet that sets the tone for the ringer Tony Stark is set to be sent through.

You can check out the full new poster after the jump.

Why ‘Man of Steel’ is Going to be a Huge Mistake for Warner Brothers

SupesEditAs of the time of this writing it is still January, 2013 and all we have seen from Zack Snyder’s Superman film is a couple of teasers and a couple of posters. Why then, you ponder, am I already dismissing the film as a misstep from the Brothers Warner?

I am ready to cast off hopeful anticipation of this film because yesterday the final nail in the coffin was resoundingly hammered in. David S. Goyer spoke to Empire Magazine and had this to say:

“We’re approaching Superman as if it weren’t a comic book movie as if it were real…  I adore the Donner films. Absolutely adore them. It just struck me that there was an idealist quality to them that may or may not work with today’s audience. It just struck me that if Superman really existed in the world, first of all this story would be a story about first contact. He’s an alien. You can easily imagine a scenario in which we’d be doing a film like E.T., as opposed to him running around in tights. If the world found out he existed, it would be the biggest thing that ever happened in human history.”

Soak that in boys and girls, the most iconic comic book character of all time is going to be presented (once again) as if he were not a comic book character starring in a comic book movie.
