Loot Crate War Unboxing: ‘Heroes’

Loot Crate August

Last month right before Comic-Con, Loot Crate released one of their best crates with a phenomenal Villains crate that included a totally original and exclusive Joki shirt alongside, amongst other things, a pair of Deadpool socks. It was going to be pretty hard to follow that up. But who better to show up the Villains than… the Heroes.

This month WallE and JC put their physical prowess to the test in an effort to capture a bunch of items based off of some of their favorite childhood heroes along with an exclusive Pop made just for Loot Crate. As some of you have seen in past crates, WallE and JC have an addiction for the little guys and battling over an exclusive one could possibly end their friendship and Whiskey & Waffles as we know it.

The Flickcast Episode 257: By Hamill’s Beard!

MARK HAMILL AT WALT DISNEY WORLD FOR STAR WARS WEEKENDS 2014After taking a week off, we’re back with an all-new episode of The Flickcast. We’ll try not to take any more time off, but no promises. Hey, we have lives too.

Anyway, on this week’s show, Chris and Joe discuss and debate The Expendables 3, the upcoming HBO series Westworld, the look of the new stormtroopers (and  more) from Star Wars: Episode VII, TV series like The Last Ship, The Strain and Outlander and yes, even the relative merits of Jedi facial hair. Of course, that’s not all they talk about. There’s also the usual “more.”

Picks this week include Chris’ pick of the FX series The Bridge and Joe’s pick of Portland hot spot Pip’s Original Donuts.

The Ice Bucket Challenge Has Made a Difference

If you’ve touched social media (especially Facebook) in the last two weeks, you’ve undoubtedly seen the Ice Bucket Challenge. The challenge was started with intentions to go viral as individuals challenged their friends to dump buckets of, you guessed it, ice and water on their heads. It has evolved past awareness for the ALS foundation as it has lead to record donations by the people icing themselves. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis was most commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease and as Gehrig’s name has begun fading from the public consciousness even after a rekindling during Cal Ripken’s major league run in the 1990’s, ALS’s notoriety had fallen by the wayside as well.

With the challenge going viral like many other trends on social media such as the Cinnamon Challenge or the Fire Challenge, this one was one that pretty much anyone could pull off with relative ease and gave a quick laugh to those watching. With celebrities like Charlie Sheen and Lady Gaga putting their own spin on it, ALS charities raised over 15.6 million dollars so far and the number continues to grow.

Op-Ed: Why CCGs are So Dangerous

magic_cards

Take two things geeks love, collecting and gaming, and you have a recipe for fun. But add a price tag to them and you have a potential recipe for disaster. It is universally accepted that geek culture isn’t a cheap one.

Most of it revolves around specific purchases that help people fall in to varying groups. You have Star Wars fans, Trekkies, Doctor Who fans, LotR fans, gamers, roleplayers, LARPers, miniature tabletop players and a horde of others who fall into at least one, but usually multiples, of these options. And how do they show it? Usually with t-shirts, wallets, bags, wristbands, or any other number of options. But there are certain geek hobbies like collectible card games that take the obsessions of the geek culture to dangerous levels.

Collectible card games (CCGs for short) are games where players build their own deck out of an ongoing and ever growing collection of cards composed of those from starter packs and booster packs. Usually the packs have a distribution of cards between mostly common, some uncommon and a single rare. The more packs you purchase and you’ll likely find even harder to find special cards. In Magic: The Gathering, these would be Mythic Rares.

Usually a box of 36 packs will only contain a certain number of these sought after cards. The better the card and more rare it is will lead to players spending more between either pack purchases or just buying a card directly.

walking-dead-season-five-trailer-lego-1

The Walking Dead is heading back to AMC for a brand new season in October. At Comic-Con last month a new trailer for the season was released and, of course, fans were pretty excited, to say the least.

But as great as it is, could said trailer be improved? Perhaps if it were made with LEGO? Fortunately, we don’t have to wonder as YouTube user Kristo499 has already done the heavy lifting for us. Yes, after the break is the Season Five trailer for The Walking Dead made with LEGO.

We’ve also included the “original” trailer as well for comparison. You’re welcome.

interstellar-poster-1

That’s right folks, it’s a brand new episode of The Flickcast. And only one day late! Woot! Sorry, we tried.

Anyway, on this week’s show, Chris and Joe discuss and debate all-things Guardians of the Galaxy. Yes, they even settle the bet. Who won? Well, you’ll just have to listen to find out, won’t you?

They also find some time to talk about Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar and a few other things too. That’s right, there’s also the usual “more.”

The pick this week is another dual one. Yes, the hosts are getting lazy, thanks for asking. Said pick is the new “Awesome Mix Vol. 1” from Guardians of the Galaxy. Check it out, it’s a good one.

‘Loot Crate Wars’ July Unboxing: ‘Villains’

july-2014-loot-crate-theme-villains

Hot on the heels of Comic-Con comes the next unboxing in the Loot Crate Wars series. For July and August, the guys at Loot Crate have created a two part crate. First, July kicked things off with Villains as its theme which started with an awesome super foe themed trailer on Loot Crate’s own YouTube channel. In it is some of the baddest of the bad as you’ll see in the unboxing video below.

Most notable of the Crate (while still trying to keep the article spoiler-free-ish) is a special variant comic for a number one that just came out from Marvel. Loot Crate’s subscriber base has gotten so big that just by putting it in the July crate, they literally doubled the preorders of the book.

Movie Review: ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ – Nat’s Take

guard

Guardians of the Galaxy is the summer blockbuster I’ve been waiting for for longer than I can remember.

The usual adjectives of effusive praise are appropriate: funny, clever, touching, and, of course, fun. While Marvel Studios has certainly found the formula for successful films, they’ve been progressively more and more serious and, worse, self-important. Guardians has the good sense to mock itself and its concept, which is likely due in large part to its star, Parks & Recreation‘s Chris Pratt, and writer/director James Gunn (Slither), and perhaps almost as large a part being that it’s relatively free of the Marvel Universe around which every other film it’s made snugly revolves. I doubt we’d see even Tony Stark using a space-rat as a make-believe microphone, especially in the first two minutes.

So Gunn and Pratt bring a delightfully refreshing sense of self deprecation to their film, Pratt playing the somewhat well-known Peter Quill, a.k.a. Star-Lord, intergalactic swashbuckler. The promotional writeups describe him as a mix of Han Solo and Marty McFly, but I think Indiana Jones may be more appropriate, since they’re both adept at getting into and out of particularly sticky situations.

This time Star-Lord has snatched an orb of potentially unimaginable power, which puts him in the sights of nearly everyone across the galaxy, from assassin Gamora (Zoe Saldana) to planetary ravager Ronan (Lee Pace) to Yondu (Michael Rooker), Star-Lord’s kind-of adopted father, to genetically modified raccoon Rocket (Bradley Cooper) and his Ent-ian-ish pal Groot (Vin Diesel). After a three-way battle on the universal capital planet, the four are imprisoned and…blah, blah, blah. They team up, everyone tries to kill them, and so on.
