The Flickcast Episode 242: Hail Hydra!

Captain_America_Winter_Soldier-5

That’s right, there’s a brand new episode of The Flickcast for you to enjoy. And on the correct day too. No, no need to thank us. We do it all for you.

As you would expect, this week Chris and Joe take on some new topics and revisit old ones. But really, they spend most of the episode talking about Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. You got a problem with that? No. Okay then.

This week’s picks include Chris’ pick of the collected comic book trade of The Winter Soldier by Ed Brubaker and Joe’s pick of the band Sound of Contact. Just trying to keep it diverse. Don’t judge.

Final ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ Trailer Arrives

X_Men_Days_of_Future_Past-5

Each time new trailers, photos or whatever drops from this upcoming movie, we get even more excited. Not that that’s really possible at this point as we’re already about as excited as you can get

There’s no doubt, we’re seeing this one opening day (or sooner, if possible). Yes, as the title says, we’re talking about X-Men: Days of Future Past.

There’s a new trailer out now and yes, it looks awesome. In this movie Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) goes back in time 50 years to alter history and hopefully prevent some bad shit from going down.

Does he succeed? Probably. But along the way you can be sure he kicks a lot of ass. As you might expect.

Along for the ride in this one, besides Jackman, are James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Halle Berry, Michael Fassbender, Anna Paquin, Ellen Page, Peter Dinklage, Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, Fan Bingbing, Omar Sy, Nicholas Hoult and more.

Look for X-Men: Days of Future Past to arrive on May 23. Check out the trailer after the break.

Young Geeks, Be Smart: Never Purge Your Stuff!

dungeons-and-dragons-xenomorph-573760

Every now and then, those of us who have been around longer get on our high horses and dispense what we consider guidance while those we speak to may consider it unsolicited rambling. But hey, we’re older so you have to respect us dammit — especially the young geeks of the world.

We know it’s a hard life but let’s be clear, you have it a lot easier than we did. Back when we were younger, playing video games, Magic: The Gathering and AD&D 4th Edition usually meant you’d catch some teasing and probably not get laid. Well, in some circles by the time you hit 30, the latter two may still be true but at least now gaming is incredibly common and not a symbol of geekdom.

But if you’ve done the whole growing up thing right, you wouldn’t be so worried about what people are going to think by the time you’ve hit 30 and have probably found yourself a quality group of cohorts who won’t be making fun of you for playing AD&D 4th Edition. They will be the ones who will be giving you a hard time because you rolled a 1 and fell onto the blade of your own sword by accident.

So when you find these friends you can pull out your Monster Manual and get cracking… except for those who “fell off” their game when they stopped playing around 15. And while some packed their cards and games and figured neatly away just in case, we know tons who got rid of everything. They sold it off way cheaper than they knew they should have or in some cases just got rid of it.

Breakfast with ‘Hannibal’

Hannibal - Season 2

Breakfast with Hannibal. That’s not what the NBC press reps were calling it, but the journalists present for the early morning Q&A panel on the show had a field day speculating on the possible culinary choices. Unfortunately the breakfast menu was the normal hotel convention food, but thankfully the panel made up for it.

Hannibal, now in its second season, is based on the Thomas Harris novel, Red Dragon, which investigates the early journey of forensic psychiatrist/serial killer Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen) and FBI agent Will Graham (Hugh Dancy).

Hannibal is probably one of the most well know psycho villains in the world. We all know what’s going to happen…eventually, but the road trip to reach that final act is fascinating, startling and sometimes very disturbing. It probably also says a lot about us, the audience, as well. We are the ultimate voyeurs.

Mads Mikkelsen is an excellent choice for this early version of the pervasive serial killer. After the panel he thoughtfully answered more questions from the press.

The Flickcast: Do you think Hannibal hits all of the points of being a psychopath, or what is he?

YouTube Pranksters Are Getting a Movie

Natural Born Pranksters

They may be this generation’s Jackass but they aren’t yet a household name… yet. Vitalyzdtv, Roman Atwood and Dennis Roady have about 10,000,000 subscribers and have gotten close to a billion views on their YouTube channels but the trio of pranksters aren’t satisfied with just being on top of the YouTube prank world. They want something bigger. And definitely a bigger screen.

The prank trio is pairing up with Collective Digital Studio to produce a movie called Natural Born Pranksters. The chief content officer for CDS Gary Binkow told the Hollywood Reporter, “We’re really interested in working with creative, dynamic influencers… Roman, Vitaly and Dennis are at the pinnacle of this genre. They have a really loyal and engaged fan base. We thought (the film) was a really great opportunity to tap into that.”

The Flickcast Episode 241: Never Say Never (Again)

scarlett-lucy-1

That whole “getting back on track” thing we were harping about before? Yeah, well, it worked this time. Sorta. We did get two episodes in a row, they just came out a day late each time.

Well, what are you gonna do, right? At least there’s now a brand new episode of The Flickcast for you to enjoy. That’s what counts.

As you would expect, this week Chris and Joe take on some new topics and revisit old ones. Some of these include the new season of Game of Thrones, casting news from the world of movies and TV, new trailers, a bit about the new Captain America movie, 3D movies, the beauty of language, safety on set and the dangers of helicopters.

Just listen. You’ll enjoy it.

This week’s picks include Chris’ pick of the new Fire TV from Amazon (see his written review here) and Joe’s pick of actress Scarlett Johansson. Why? Not why you think. Well, a little why you think.

‘Doctor Who’ Casts Ben Miller as the Sheriff of Nottingham?

uktv-ben-miller

Ben Miller is set to star as a villain in a Doctor Who episode penned by Mark Gatiss. It will be the actor’s first role on the British juggernaut, which returns later this year.

“As a committed Whovian, I cannot believe my luck in joining the Twelfth Doctor for one of his inaugural adventures,” Miller said. “My only worry is that they’ll make me leave the set when I’m not filming.”

Rumors are swirling that Miller may be playing the Sheriff of Nottingham, or some Whovian iteration of the famous baddie. Last week, Tom Riley was cast in an upcoming Doctor Who episode and many are assuming he will be playing Robin Hood. The same rumors are naming other another recently announced guest star, Ian Hallard, as playing merry man, Alan-A-Dale.

For now, BBC America has not confirmed any role for Miller, except as a “storming villain” to go against Peter Capaldi’s Doctor. Best known for being one half of the comedy duo Armstrong and Miller, the actor was recently seen in BBC’s Death in Paradise as DI Richard Poole. Interestingly, Miller’s comedic partner, Alexander Armstrong, already had a stint on Doctor Who, appearing in the 2011 Christmas Special as Reg Arwell.
