J. J. Abrams Answers ‘Star Wars’ Questions . . . Kind Of

star-wars-episode-vii-logo

J.J. Abrams was supposed to talk to the press to promote his new NBC series Believe, but we couldn’t resist asking him questions about some of his other projects…such as Star Wars VII. Getting any good responses out of him isn’t easy as we all remember with the secrecy regarding the last Star Trek move. Mr. Abrams is a master of obfuscation, but that doesn’t mean we didn’t try.

QUESTION: Where are you on the Star Wars script? Is it done?

J.J. ABRAMS: Yeah. We’re working really hard. We’ve got our script and we’re in deep prep. We’re full steam ahead. We’re working real hard on it and it’s quite a thrill.

Q: What are some of the craziest rumors you’ve heard?

ABRAMS: God, there have been so many of them. Honestly, I don’t know. It’s amazing to see how many there are. It’s really remarkable. But it’s sweet because it shows that there’s an interest in this movie that we all obviously know is there. It is an incredible thing to see how many crazy things get thrown out that people then often write commentaries about how happy they are or how disappointed they are about something that’s completely false. But it’s a lot of noise, frankly.

Monday Freeview: Sort Of . . . Games with Gold vs. PlayStation Plus

Monday Freeview Games with Gold PlayStation Plus

So on the Monday Freeview, we have brought you some examples of free shows or games you’ve been able to get a hold of. Up until this point though we have ignored two very important “free” options in the gaming world. These are the downloadable gaming libraries available to those subscribed to the XBox Live Gold and PlayStation Plus services.

While these services are technically not free, the inclusion of downloadable titles has been added to them as an added value while both primarily serve as a way for gamers to play online for the XBox 360, XBox One and PlayStation 4.

First, let’s take a look at the PlayStation Plus service. Originally a waning service as it wasn’t required for online play, the Instant Game Collection was one of the features that had not been fully exploited. It wasn’t until about two years after the service launched in June of 2010 that they began offering full PlayStation 3 titles to the roster as opposed to mainly retro games or PSN titles.

Check Out a Preview of Sunday’s New Episode of ‘True Detective’

true-detective-hbo

One thing we really love around here is a good, gritty detective story. If it’s well done it can be riveting to watch and as the story unfolds the revelations can often be shocking and very satisfying. That’s one of the hallmarks of a great show.

A prime example of this is HBO’s latest drama True Detective, which stars Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey and is written by Nic Pizzolatto. We won’t spend a lot of time describing the show, but instead will say this: you should be watching it.

It’s that good — especially if you’re a fan of the aforementioned gritty, detective stories. This one’s got grit to spare.

We’ve got a preview of the second episode to share with you today. Check it out after the break.

True Detective airs Sundays at 9/8C on HBO.

Here’s a Preview of Tonight’s New Episode of ‘Helix’

NUP_158229_2000.JPG

There’s a lack of great Sci-Fi shows on TV these days. Sure, occasionally, one comes along, but for the most part, you don’t really see them much, or if you do, they don’t seem to last very long. The new show Helix on Syfy is both great and one we hope lasts a long time.

Coming from Exec. Producer Ron Moore (of Battlestar Galactica fame) and created by Cameron Porsandeh, the debut of the show was one of the most highly rated premieres on Syfy in its history. A new episode airs tonight and we, of course, have a preview of it for you.

In this one we see how things are going for the team sent to investigate a series of bizarre and deadly incidents at a remote research station. Needless to say, things don’t go as planned. In fact, things go really, really bad.

Helix, which stars Billy Campbell, Hiroyuki Sanada, Kyra Zagorsky and Mark Ghanimé airs tonight at 10/9C on SyFy. Check out the preview after the break.

Discovering ‘Doctor Who: Prisoners of Time’

2014-01-16 1

Whovians around the world were treated to a team-up adventure of the highest order this past November when “Day of the Doctor” aired, marking the 50th anniversary of the long-running British sci-fi television show Doctor Who. What many Whovians are unaware of, however, is that IDW Publishing (the current holders of the Doctor Who license for comics in North America) had their own plans to ring in the celebration with a 12-issue mini-series entitled Doctor Who: Prisoners of Time.

Writers Scott and David Tipton (no strangers to sci-fi in comics with their numerous Star Trek series for IDW) take great care in including as much of the Doctor’s past and various incarnations as they can fit; while a different artist draws each issue. This may turn some of you away as there are some people who prefer to have the same creative team throughout a series, but let me assure you that the different art styles do nothing to take away from the story.

Without the constraints of television budgets to hold them back, where/when will the creators take the Doctor? Everywhere, of course! But what begins as paying a visit to an old friend quickly evolves into a mystery that the Doctor will struggle with; not only to figure out and stop, but to also remember that anything’s happening at all! Someone has been travelling throughout time, plucking the Doctor’s companions out of thin air, and worse yet, the mysterious manipulator has seemingly travelled with the Doctor before…

It should be noted that not all Whovians will enjoy this story. The die-hards that are familiar with the classic series and Doctors One through Seven will undoubtedly gobble this series up, whereas fans of only the current series will likely scratch their heads during the first batch of issues. If you fall in the latter category, I’d still recommend this series for you as a nice introduction to the Doctor’s colorful history.

One last thing for you back-issue hunters out there: yes, this story has been collected in two trade paperbacks with a hardcover coming along soon; but getting your mitts on the individual issues will net you another treat, which I’ve collected for you to see below. As far as comic covers go, you can do a lot worse than the talented Francesco Francavilla. In any case, once you’ve experienced this centuries-spanning tale, I’d love to hear what you think of it. Happy reading!

86th Oscar Nominations Announced

oscar-statues

Even though we don’t really care all that much who or what wins an Academy Award, the rest of Hollywood does. It’s also likley many of you care as well.

So, in that spirit, here’s a list of the nominations that were announced this morning. There’s a lot of them and, to put it bluntly, not that many surprises. The movies and performances that seem “Oscar-worthy” were nominated. It was kinda a no-brainier year.

Of course, there’s also a few regulars who made the cut, like Meryl Streep, you would expect to see on the list. One notable exception is Tom Hanks, who seemed to be a shoe-in for a nomination for his role as Captain Phillips. He got nothing.

I guess every Oscar nominations list needs at least one surprise, just to try and keep it interesting and prove the Oscar voters don’t just vote for whomever or whatever wins a Golden Globe. Of course, Hanks didn’t win the Golden Globe either, but I’m sure it was just a pleasure to be nominated.

Anyway, here’s the nominations list (stolen from the folks at Deadline):

Here’s Previews for Tonight’s New ‘Community’ and ‘Parks and Rec’

Goggins-Community-1

We’re glad to see Community is back and we’re liking it so far now that Dan Harmon is back at the helm. Tonight is an all-new episode, featuring awesome guest star Walton Goggins, so we’ve got previews for it for you.

In addition, there’s a new episode of Parks and Recreation tonight too and yes, we’ve got previews for that one too. Both shows are really funny and hopefully both will survive the often fickle TV audience who loves a show at first and then vilifies it later on for no real reason other than, we suspect, boredom. These shows deserve better.

Anyway, check out the previews after the break. Look for things to kick off first with Community tonight at 8/7C on NBC.
