The year of the Twelfth Doctor has also been the year of incredible ratings for BBC America. Doctor Who finished 2014 with its highest rated season ever including over 2.3 million viewers on Christmas Day for the special “Last Christmas” episode.
Peter Capaldi debuted as the newest regeneration of the beloved Time Lord alongside returning companion Jenna Coleman as Clara Oswald. Together the duo brought in an average 2.035 million viewers in Live+3, meaning those ratings also include DVR views. Capaldi’s first Christmas Special more than doubled the viewership of his predecessor’s first such episode, “A Christmas Carol,” in 2010. The Twelfth Doctor’s “Last Christmas” was the #1 show in all of Primetime television, excluding sports.
Series 8 added fresh new twists and turns to the Doctor Who mythos including a reappearance by The Master, but not as we’ve ever seen him before. Michelle Gomez starred as Missy, a female regeneration of the Doctor’s old frenemy . Samuel Anderson also had a touching and integral turn as Clara’s boyfriend Danny Pink.
“Last Christmas” will be available on Blu-ray and DVD on February 17. Doctor Who will return for another full season in 2015.

After a week off for the 4th of July holiday, we’re back with a brand new episode of The Flickcast. And you thought we’d forgotten about you. Not likely.
On this week’s show Chris and Joe talk about a lot of different things, as usual. Some of these “things” include the recent Emmy nominations and the worst snubs, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, the latest on Doctor Who, more on Guardians of the Galaxy and a bunch of other stuff.
Chris and Joe even make a bet on the opening weekend box office for Guardians. What did they think? Well, you’ll just have to listen to find out. Saw that coming, didn’t you?
Picks this week include Chris’ pick of director John Hillcoat’s Lawless and Joe’s pick of the wonderful, and sadly soon to be extinct, 35mm film.
As always, if you have comments, questions, critiques, offers of sponsorship, or whatever, feel free to hit us up in the comments, on Twitter, at Facebook, Google+ or via email.

Jane Tranter and Julie Gardner, part of the team responsible for bringing Doctor Who back to TV in 2005, have teamed up with The X-Files‘ Glen Morgan and The L Word‘s Rose Lam to bring a new original series to BBC America. Intruders stars John Simm, Mira Sorvino, Robert Forster, James Frain, Tory Kittles and introduces ten-year old Millie Brown.
Based on Michael Marshall Smith’s novel, Intruders is about a secret society devoted to chasing immortality by seeking refuge in the bodies of others. It premieres Saturday, August 23rd on BBC America and the channel has provided a brand-new creepy trailer to get you ready. Most likely this will be paired with the return of Doctor Who and should make Saturdays full of sci-fi fun this autumn.

Orphan Black abounds with interesting troubled characters even if most of them are clones all played by the brilliantly talented Tatiana Maslany. But even clones need a BFF and that’s actor Jordan Gavaris who is Felix Dawkins or Fee to his many friends. Felix is also a scene stealing, sarcastic rent boy as well as an outlandish, sarcastic artist. And he always gets the best lines.
Several months ago, after their segment at the Television Critics Association conference, BBC America hosted an afternoon tea party for the casts of several of their shows and The Flickcast was lucky enough to trade questions and answers with the delightful, but not sarcastic, Jordan Gavaris.
THE FLICKCAST: Can you talk about playing Felix, and will you also be going deeper into the character in this new season?
JORDAN GAVARIS: Hugely deeper. I think Season 1 Felix was very much an integral cog in the mystery and the conception of the story and in Sarah’s journey, and now I think what Season 2 helps to do is establish him outside of the clones, establish him as an individual with his own identity and as a multifaceted human and not just a plot device or not just someone who’s there to facilitate whatever Sarah’s crazy idea is that day or, you know, be the person that she calls when she’s in trouble, that he gets an identity outside of all that which is really important because he’s a living, breathing person.
I think that he has kind of just gone along and been that person who picks up the phone at 3:00 in the morning, and I think it’s safe to say that the relationship with Sarah is going to come to a head, and there’s a really tough decision that’s going to be made, and there are many tough decisions that are going to be made, and it’s not going to be easy. So, yeah, there’s a lot of relationships that are tested, particularly, Sarah’s and Felix’s.
TFC: You’ve got some of the most loyal fans, not only the Clone Club but critics as well. It was amazing how fast the show caught fire.
JG: When you are talking about the bloggers and Clone Club and everybody, too, the critics, like the endless list of people, like you guys [the press] who kind of championed the show, in the beginning you told five people who told five people who told five people who like told Dalton Ross who shoved it down EW’s throats in the office and like made everybody watch it. It made a big difference, like a huge, huge difference.

Ben Miller is set to star as a villain in a Doctor Who episode penned by Mark Gatiss. It will be the actor’s first role on the British juggernaut, which returns later this year.
“As a committed Whovian, I cannot believe my luck in joining the Twelfth Doctor for one of his inaugural adventures,” Miller said. “My only worry is that they’ll make me leave the set when I’m not filming.”
Rumors are swirling that Miller may be playing the Sheriff of Nottingham, or some Whovian iteration of the famous baddie. Last week, Tom Riley was cast in an upcoming Doctor Who episode and many are assuming he will be playing Robin Hood. The same rumors are naming other another recently announced guest star, Ian Hallard, as playing merry man, Alan-A-Dale.
For now, BBC America has not confirmed any role for Miller, except as a “storming villain” to go against Peter Capaldi’s Doctor. Best known for being one half of the comedy duo Armstrong and Miller, the actor was recently seen in BBC’s Death in Paradise as DI Richard Poole. Interestingly, Miller’s comedic partner, Alexander Armstrong, already had a stint on Doctor Who, appearing in the 2011 Christmas Special as Reg Arwell.

A new companion may be in store for the Doctor in series 8. Samuel Anderson has joined the cast of Doctor Who as recurring character, Danny Pink, in the new season.
Like the Doctor’s (Peter Capaldi) current companion, Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman), Pink is a teacher at Coal Hill School. Other character details have yet to be released but perhaps he will be following in the footsteps of Rory Williams and Mickey Smith as the companion’s guy back home who eventually joins the Doctor’s traveling team.
Doctor Who’s lead writer and executive producer, Steven Moffat, points out Pink’s connection with a bit of the show’s history. “For the fourth time in Doctor Who history, Coal Hill School is coming to the aid of the TARDIS,” he said. “In 1963 teachers Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright accompanied the first Doctor. These days it’s the turn of Jenna Coleman as Clara Oswald. And very soon now, Sam Anderson as Danny Pink will be entering the world of the Doctor.”

New Doctor means new clothes. The Twelfth Doctor is getting into the Whovian swing of things by choosing an outfit all his own. BBC America has released the first image of Doctor Who actor Peter Capaldi in what will likely be his signature costume.
At first glance, Calpaldi’s look is old school with a bit of modern flair. While there is no bowtie or extra long scarf or Converse shoes to stand out, the clothes do fit the man. As Capaldi said, “He’s woven the future from the cloth of the past. Simple, stark, and back to basics. No frills, no scarf, no messing, just 100 per cent Rebel Time Lord.”
Of course all Whovians know that the Doctor’s outfit usually has a story behind it but fans will have to wait until later this year to learn how and why the Twelfth Doctor picked his costume. The specifics of the outfit, according to BBC America, are: a dark blue Crombie coat with red lining, dark blue trousers, a white shirt and black Doc Marten shoes.

Christmas started early today as the BBC released a hand full of images and promotional art from the Doctor Who Christmas Special episode The Time of the Doctor. As viewers of the show are aware, this episode marks the last for Matt Smith as his Doctor will be seen to regenerate into Peter Capaldi’s incarnation at the end, foreshadowed by the tagline “A Change Is Going To Come…”. There is nothing spoilery in the below images so feel free to view them without ruining the story.
The Time of the Doctor is written by Steven Moffat and directed by Jamie Payne. Jenna Coleman returns as companion Clara Oswald. Also starring are Mark Brighton, Sonita Henry, Orla Brady, James Buller, Tom Gibbons, Shelia Reid, Jack Hollington, Rob Jarvis and Tessa Peake-Jones.

BBC America is running a marathon of Doctor Who episodes this week celebrating the 50th anniversary of the show culminating in the worldwide showing of Doctor Who: The Day of the Doctor on Saturday, November 23. But on Friday evening, the 22nd, they will show An Adventure in Space and Time, which is a dramatic recreation of how The Doctor and his Companions finally made it to the “telly” 50 years ago.
Space and Time was written by Mark Gatiss, directed by Terry McDonough and stars David Bradley as William Hartnell, the very first Doctor. It also features Jessica Raine as producer Verity Lambert and Sacha Dhawan as director Waris Hussein.
An Adventure in Space and Time gives a glimpse of why and how Doctor Who has become a fan favorite all over the world. The show is an amazing feat, a one of a kind experience, but it almost didn’t happen. The first pilot never aired, they didn’t think Hartnell was right for a children’s show and that’s just part of the story.
“The film does cover quite in detail how hard it was for our three main characters to get the film made originally,” McDonough explains. “And also the problems they had on getting it broadcast. The first time the episode was made Sydney Newman [creator and Head of BBC Drama] insisted that they reshoot the whole thing. He just wasn’t happy with the quality of it.

We don’t usually believe in releasing teasers right before actual trailers. It’s mostly kinda lame. However, when the teaser in question just happens to be about the upcoming 50th Anniversary of Doctor Who, we make an exception.
With just 15 days to go before the 50th anniversary, BBC America has got quite a few things going on that will lead up to the global simulcast of the anniversary special, Doctor Who: The Day Of The Doctor. Starting on November 18t, the channel will run marathons and primetime specials including a look into the science behind the series, a look back at departing Time Lord Matt Smith‘s tenure, and Smith and David Tennant will be guests on The Graham Norton Show.
On November 22nd, BBC America will premiere the new Doctor Who film, An Adventure In Space And Time, which documents the genesis of the character and gives insight into his enduring popularity. They will also release a full trailer for Day Of The Doctor, which stars Smith, Tennant, Jenna Coleman, Billie Piper and John Hurt, tomorrow.
Until then, here’s a little taste of what you can expect. After the break, of course.
