We had a pretty neat opportunity over the weekend film going audience. Pacific Rim, a phenomenal summer block buster that didn’t rely on existing IP, was going up against the scourge of cinemadom, Grown Ups 2. A win for the former could signal a turning point in the battle between lowest common denominator and inventiveness. Instead Grown Ups made more than it’s predecessor and Pacific Rim settles for 3rd place. We all screwed the pooch on this one people.
But before we get into that, lets give props where props are due. Despicable Me 2 continues its dominating run by coming in first place against both newcomers this weekend. The $44 Million dollar weekend represents a great 46.4% drop proving that the interest in Gru and his minions is not as front loaded as some had suspected. The movie is homing in on mega-hit territory and should finish it’s run well over $300 Million.
But that’s not why we are here people.
Coming in second place was Grown Ups 2 to a total of over $42 million. I think we might now have that pesky question to the life, the universe and everything Douglas Adams wrote a whole lot about. How many millions are people willing to fork over opening weekend to a lazy, low brow ‘family comedy’? 42!
This week on The Flickcast, we’re just going to pretend nothing happend and move on. Although, that’s not really fair. Okay, let’s try this instead.
Welcome to an all-new episode of The Flickcast featuring new co-host Joe Dilworth! How’s that? Yeah, we like that better because we’re happy to have him on the show.
To kick things off on this week’s episode, Chris and Joe discuss all manner of new topics including Pacific Rim, Oldboy, Man of Steel, the upcoming San Diego Comic-Con and much more.
In addition, the boys made some picks this week including Joe’s pick of the new album by Kirby Krackle and Chris’ pick of a geeky piece of hardware known as the Nest. Yes, he picked one of those. He’s a geek, we get it.

With Pacific Rim hitting theaters this week it’s a great time for FX to be promoting the new season of one of it’s best shows: Sons of Anarchy. What do these two have in common?
Well, in case you’re not familiar, both Sons of AnarchyandPacific Rim feature actors Charlie Hunnam and Ron Perlman. So there you go. But this particular post isn’t about Pacific Rim, it’s about Sons of Anarchy.
Specifically, it’s about a preview for season six of the show. In said preview we get reacquainted with the resident of Charming, CA and the biker gang of lovable misfits we’ve come to know over the last five seasons.
Check out the clip after the break. Sons of Anarchy returns in September on FX.
With Comic-Con kicking off next week in San Diego, one thing you might be on the lookout for when attending is some cool, new artwork. Well, if you’re in the market for something like that, one booth you should definitely check out is Mondo’s.
They will have some all-new, exclusive content for the show including posters from Pacific Rim. Here’s the rest of the scoop, directly from the Mondo press release:
Mondo is excited to announce that it will return to San Diego Comic-Con 2013 with incredible new prints, including three colossal pieces of giant monster crushing artwork to celebrate the release Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures’Pacific Rim from director Guillermo del Toro on July 12. The Mondo booth will be set up on the main conference floor in booth #936 throughout SDCC, Wednesday July 17 through Sunday July 21. Additionally, new prints from celebrated artists Martin Ansin, Olly Moss and Drew Struzan will be available for presale on Friday, July 12.
“Mondo has always been instrumental in cementing world creation in pop culture- these posters by Ash Thorp and Kevin Tong and Vania Zouravliov capture perfectly the wild, gleeful spirit of Pacific Rim – here’s to a mad world of Mecha and Kaiju!!” said director Guillermo del Toro.
Animated sequels in recent history are hardly a slam dunk at the box office, for every Toy Story 3 there are three Happy Feet 2. Thankfully for all of the principles involved, Despicable Me 2 was every bit the hit the former was.
The popularity of the Minions can not be denied as Despicable Me 2 brought it more money than any animated film has ever earned over a five-day span. Granted the Fourth coming on a Thursday is a near perfect storm for a major release, but the final tally of over $142 Million speaks for itself. Even when you shave the first two days off the tally, the traditional three-day weekend was right in line with the monster $80+ million Monsters University brought in a few weeks ago.
Coming up in second place for the holiday stretch was the sputtering Lone Ranger. It seems like high-profile bombs have become commonplace, and everything about the action western screamed this would be another one. Guess what? It was! Coming in at just over $29 million for the three-day, and just under $49 since Wednesday, the film was not the same abject failure John Carter was, but it is far from the performance one expects from the same crew that gave us the Pirates of the Caribbean films.
Once more, friends, we enter the world of Pacific Rim and giant monsters trying to destroy humanity. Fortunately, there’s a chance for all of us in the form of our own giant creations: the Jaeger robots.
In this latest trailer for Guillermo Del Toro’s Pacific Rim, Idris Elba‘s Stacker Pentecost attempts to enlist Charlie Hunnam’s washed-up pilot Raleigh Becket to help save the human race. Isn’t that always the way? Only the washed-up can save us.
In the movie, Becket will team with rookie Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi) to control the human-made robots as they battle the Kaiju monsters. One word to describe this trailer and upcoming movie? Epic.
Also starring in Pacific Rim are Charlie Day, Clifton Collins Jr., Ron Perlman, Robert Kazinsky and Max Martini. Look for it in theaters on July 12. Look for the trailer after the break.
Let’s try something new for today. Here’s the new trailer for Pacific Rim for you to see and enjoy, presented without much in the way of comment or commentary.
Believe us, you’ll see and enjoy it all right. And more.
This week on The Flickcast, Chris and Matt try to keep it a bit more civil and, well, almost succeed. They also manages to discuss several new topics (and a few old ones) including Mark Millar’s love of digital comics, new Pacific Rim trailer, the new Wolverine trailer and what Summer movies they are most looking forward to seeing.
They also talked about the upcoming games Grand Theft Auto V, the recently announced Call of Duty: Ghosts and how Matt loves all-things side-scrolling and hates the smell of death. And no, sadly, they don’t really go to Japan. We just thought that title was funny.
And, as usual, the boys made some picks this week with Matt’s being the side-scroller game Battleblock Theater and Chris’ being his new favorite desktop computer: the iMac from Apple.
